The day that news of Ryan Dunn's death broke out, film critic Roger Ebert spoke out about the daredevil's car accident, which has since been proven to be due to him driving under the influence of alcohol, on his Twitter: "Friends don't let jackasses drive drunk."

He has received a serious backlash from fans of Dunn, and even from Dunn's longtime best friend Bam Margera: "I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day and piece of **** roger ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents," and in another Tweet, "About a jackass drunk driving and his is one, **** you! Millions of people are crying right now, shut your fat ******* mouth!"

However, many of Ebert's followers and others have defended Ebert's remarks, commenting on Dunn's reckless driving under the influence. Amid the lash from critics and fans about the remarks being "too soon," Ebert has since apologized for the Tweets.

What do you make of Ebert's remarks? Do you feel they were too soon after Ryan Dunn's death and therefore considered insensitive? Or were they a proper notice of reckless driving and alcohol abuse?

he was right but it was too soon and alcohol hadn't even been disclosed as a cause of the crash yet so he was essentially speculating.

apologizing doesn't take it back, it's clear that's how he feels and is just apologizing to save face. Obviously should not have said it.

Never liked Ebert.

Of course he had to give his 2 cents about this.

What would they be saying is this guy plowed his car into a sedan and killed a family of 5?

He acted reckless (which is nothing new to this guy) and now he's dead because of it. Be dsad that he died but don't ignore the fact that he was a "jackass" - pun not intended.

He probably shouldn`t have said it so soon after it happened, but the tweet was right. Dunn`s an idiot for driving under the influence like that.

lol, it's just one tweet in a sea of millions way to get butt hurt, it's fitting and funny but i can see how people can get offended. The danger of twitter i guess is writing things to the world that just popped into your head, with dark humor this could get you into all sorts of trouble.......

Yeah I heard about this on BBC. Definitely insensitive, but fundamentally, it was a pretty valid comment. The mistake Ebert made was tailoring the comment to Dunn's Jackass status (instead of mentioning the concept of drunk driving loosely), and supporters of Dunn responded a little excessively it seems -- primarily 'cause the guy is famous. Regardless, the comment shouldn't have been made in the first place.

It was stupid to drive under the influence of alcohol, however I believe the Ebert should have just kept his mouth closed. There was no reason what so ever to Tweet what he did. Some things are better left unspoken and this is one of them. IMO both of them made stupid decisions.

Everybody knows that driving under the influence is stupid, irresponsible, illegal and potentially lethal... I think an incident like this is actually the perfect time to point that out. Sometimes the truth hurts... it's hard to feel sorry for anyone who passes away (and takes someone else with them to boot) due to their own irresponsibility and stupidity...

Maybe a little, but it's deserved. He killed his passenger, could have easily killed more people, and yet he's getting far more sympathy than any other idiot who drives drunk gets.

just because something is true, does not mean it needs to be said. At least a day or two after the event.

so yes, incredibly insensitive of Ebert to say those things.

give it time before commenting; emotions are still high, and while Dunn might be a "jackass", the only people you are hurting by saying these things are the survivors, and they dont deserve that.

Well the survivors should expect to hear some unpleasant things since he was in the public eye. Best to not watch/listen/read for awhile. And I've seen jokes in bad taste about other events.....so I'm still not seeing why this one should be exempt. What he did was unconscionable.

He wasn't the first nor will he be the last to speak the truth about just how incredibly stupid Dunn was for drinking and driving over 100mph with a passenger. Everyone always has something to say about everything, positive or negative, and for people to target Ebert for this is ridiculous. I have no sadness for someone who did such a stupid thing and will not defend him or go after anyone who speaks their mind about him and neither should anyone else, the guy but people in danger and contributed to the death of someone else with his actions. He isn't necessarily deserving of 'respect' or protection from others opinions on what happened.

is "friends don't let jackasses drive drunk" the only thing he said? if that's all he said, big freakin deal, it's true anyways. ryan dunn's friends should not have let him drive that car when he was drunk. that's all there is to it.

Well...

Ebert didn't call bam just to tell him that, he posted in online aimed at no one in particular.

Second, as sad as it is that bam lost his best friend, it doesn't make what Ebert said any less true. He may be distraught, but that doesn't diminish the fact that Dunn died as a direct result of his own choices and actions.

So? Then it's his fault for reading it. Celebrities are in the spotlight...both the good and the bad. What Dunn did was reprehensible and should not be ignored. Perhaps it can serve as a warning and maybe save some lives.
