[QUOTE="cybrcatter"][QUOTE="Deihjan"][QUOTE="cybrcatter"] Yea, I usually spend about 50+ hours on an RPG, but I usually complete all of the side quests. I put about 140 hours into Oblivion the first time through.

Well, if I have to put all the time I ever spend in just Dragon Age Origins alone...then.. around 129 hours, off the top of my head... Can't remember all of my playthrough-times, but 5 playthroughs.. And then there's the downloads I have for it, as well..

That sounds about right for me too. If I counted all of the hours I put into FF IX, it would be just a few hundred short of 1k.

I can have so much fun with that kind of games, yet somehow JRPGs are never able to catch my attention. I bought White Knight Chronicles in hope of a game that could capture me, but no... Worst..game.. I ever bought. Not even TFU for the DS was that bad.

Ive come to a personal understanding that no matter how hard i want to like them, ive outgrown JRPGs. I used to think i liked them... Now i realize i simply dont. Oblivion and Morrowind and Chrono Trigger yes. DA i liked but havnt beaten more than once, i felt very confined in that game, and it really killed it for me.

FF3 is supposed to be a bit dated I hear, but I havn't got round to playing it. I wasn't that struck on the FF4 remake myself, and that was supposed to be better. Rose Crystal? No that sounds like Tactics Advance :x. The first one that was re-released on PSP is where it's really at. The Gameboy/DS ones are a bit campy I heard, and meant to be nowhere near as good. FF: Tactics is quite mature for a JRPG.

Me neither they are just examples of RPGs i do like :p DA im sure would be better on PC, but what felt the most limited to me was the way they could make a sprawling forest feel like a restricting tunnel. Knee deep stream, or small puddle? Better find another way around! Ugh, that must be why i loved Oblivion, freedom to explore as you see fit.

Well, the theme doesn't really matter to me, if the game captures me. And FF doesn't. Turn Based, save every time you fought something, slaving your ass off to get different jobs..not my idea of fun.

I havn't got round to playing 9 yet. I'll buy it eventually though, it's on PSN now. I quite liked FF12 because of how big and open it felt. That's kind of rare in a JRPG. I also liked the job boards.

That's also why I love WoW so much. I can get up on my dragon or my hippogryph, and just fly around without caring what happens.. Then I can dive into a random zone, fight some monsters, hope for good loot, and fly away after. No stress. And you're right, they had a few problems with path-finding...And moving around your team members. *sigh* Alistair! Get away from the stairs! I can't move!

The "real" Tactics game on PS1 and PSP (War of the Lions) is where it's at; Advance left something to be desired, and I never played A2. FFIII I can appreciate as a product of its time, but I haven't had any interest in replaying it. VI is still the best one in the series to me, though I'm fond of their attempt in XII to add some WRPG tendencies to it. That's part of what makes XIII such a step backward; they went from an open world with a lot of life in XII to an artificial "world" where you just run on a set path from A to B. It only opened up in one place, but it felt like they didn't really care much for the place, despite there being sidequests there.

That seems to be the consensus from reviewers I trust.

But if you slave your ass of you get to have Ninja's and Samurai's :(. Besides, the Black Mage's look awesome and you don't have to work very hard to have them. :P I quite liked the combat in tactics though. It was turn based, and it could be a bit a slow, but it was be quite fun maximising your moves and such. You could also have very different parties depending on how you develop your characters. It did take forever to level up, but it was satisfying when you did. I liked Tactics for it's story as well, and I usually don't in JRPG's. I suppose it just depends on your gaming taste though, and it's not as if JRPG's have been particularly good as of late.

IV and VI are my favorite from that era. I appreciate the mechanics of V, but the story was lacking.

Yeah I was really disappointed with the direction they took with XIII. If they had developed on what they had achieved with XII I think they could have made a much better game, but I think Square Enix are kind of losing it now. They have so many games coming out now you have to wonder how much focus they can have on one particular title. Most of their games turn out badly as well. Parasite Eve 3 might be good though. Still havn't played the first 2 yet, I'm hoping for a PSN release. Also hoping they release VI on PSN. I never got round to playing FF games in my PS1 days, I just didn't care enough at the time :/.

I'd like to try Parasite Eve just to see what the big deal was, but VI on PSN? Meh, the loading times were so bad & the music was screwed up to the point that it was unplayable for me. Give it to me on Virtual Console any day. Square Enix now is just reaching the climax of what they started with FFVII - the belief that high-dollar cinematics and an interesting battle system make for a game experience that people like. The interesting blend of this with a good story and world to immerse yourself in was what made the games popular before, but with XIII they took away those last two, believing that they were giving people what they wanted. My favorite game from them is still Chrono Trigger - the best of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, some good WRPG tendencies, time travel, and some *gasp* original ideas make for something that just added up to be something special. Even in the DS version, you can choose to turn the anime sequences off. :P

You're probably right. Atlus are still making good and often original JRPG's. I'm not sure what's going to happen with JRPG's in general though, especially FF. They could go back to basics and work from there, but then people would complain about a lack of originality, or they could attempt to revolutionise the way we see JRPG's, which I don't think is going to happen, and people wouldn't be happy about abandoning the core gameplay. One thing for sure though is that FF13 was a giant misstep.
