I dont do sprints or anything that bulids speed. Just consistent running. But the only place to get good footing is near the water but the ground isn't level. Anywhere else, your feet sink into the sand. Maybe it's just Pensacola beach that sucks. Someone mentioned that they didn't have a problem running on the beach so it could be.

THATS WHY PEOPLE RUN ON THE BEACH, BECAUSE THE FOOTING ISN'T THE GREATEST. ITS HARDER. THATS THE POINT.

I agree. I have the tendency of counting the laps that I run and it makes time go by slower and I get tired faster. Neighborhood streets are best in my opinion.

Running on the beach is great, the sand helps cushion the impact on your knees/body, the slant and uneven surface conditions the small muscles in your ankles/knees. It's also much better and healthier to do it barefoot, since shoes are extremely unnatural for your body.
You also ussually get the nice cool sea breeze, nicer view and a place to swim if you need to cool-down.

I have tried it, it is much better than concrete. You get a better workout, with lower impact, when your feet sink in.

I usually run on screwed up city sidewalks. In the dark. At night. o_O

I walk on sidewalks in my neighborhood. I only go to the beach when we fly to Florida. Running on sand isn't supposed to be easy. It's like it grabs on to you and tries to hold on. Unless it's the hard sand.

Bikings decent, but the muscles it adds endurance to are used for almost nothing else. It's good for getting a healthy heart though and fun, thats about it.

Yeah, we always play soccer down on the beach by the lake all the time, and I don't mind it, but god, do you get tired out! Running in sand takes like 5x more work than running on a grass field or cement.

Can the beach be a lake beach, or a river beach? I've never seen a real beach :(

On I side note, I love hearing people from down south complain about it being 50F and cold in the same sentance. It's around 20F here right now, and thats so warm I'm still wearing my fall coat unziped. I coudn't imagine what you guys would be like if you ever really felt winter. Then again, I'd prob die of heatstroke if I went to flordia, as I cant stand any temperature above 70F, and have my house set at a confortable 55F.

God I love Canada, with temps raning from -40F in the winter to 100F in the summer, and the chance to get Rain, Sleet, Snow, Hail, and Thunderstorm followed by a Whiteout all in one day, and all of that in one city, we have the most messed up weather in the world availabe to us.

Running on the beach is nice for tranquility's sake. But yeah, I'd have to agree it sucks, at least based on my personal experiences. I get wicked shin-splints when I jog on the beach. Not sure why it is, probably because it's not level so I'm putting just enough extra strain on my lower legs to make them ache like hell.

I love to jog, but I hate joggin on the treadmill. I jog outside, it doesn't matter if it's 10 degrees & snowy. The only time I don't is if it's icy, since it's pretty much impossible to get a good run on in the ice. People most likely think I'm a crackhead when they see me jogging in a snowstorm, but that's okay.

I like it. At college and when I'm home in Philadelphia I always run on a track or on the roads and it gets kind of old. When we go to our beach house I love running on the beach. I don't run fast or far, but I make up for it with the difficult footing, so it balances out the way I see it.
