You could of explained it a bit better, it's a big difference between us landing on a comet and just sending cheap technology there.

MushroomWig

I don't think the technology was cheap. Far from it actually. The only other natural thing other than Earth human have landed on is the moon and the last time that happened was in the 1940's I believe.

The 1940s? Was that a joke?

Indeed I was conjuring up a mental image of what a '40s era lunar lander might look like all steampunky, messy and cool. I'm sure it was just a slip of the keystroke but I do believe the last time man was on the moon was '72 or sometime thereabouts.

Oh noez, we are all gointa diez. Tjeremiah1988

Exactly, and this is one of the lamest ways to go. I think as a species we should all ban together to figure out an awesome way to bring about the apocalypse and then work towards the goal of perfect destruction, together.

[QUOTE="EMOEVOLUTION"][QUOTE="BumFluff122"]You'd need an awfull powerful propulsion system to alter it's course. Even a nuclear strike on the asteroid, with todays bombs which are about 300 (or 3000 can't remember) times or so more powerful that the bombs used in WWII, wouldn't be able to change it's course as much as we'd like. There is a technology, or at least a potential technology, that would be able to alter it's course in significant amounts if we don't catch it in time however fuel is very hard to come by. An anti-matter engine/bomb is thought to be the most powerful potential type of engine or bomb in the universe that is known to man. Those are still a long way off from being made though as we don't even know how to hold the fuel inside the gas chamber yet and the amount of antimatter that humans have seen in their entire existence amounts to far less than even a milligram.

BumFluff122

It wouldn't be as bad as it seems.. it really depends how soon you can get the propulsion system on the asteroid.. the farther away it is.. moving it a matter of inches would make a huge difference.

I can't recall where I read this, it was in one of those science magazines, but as of right now we don't have the technology to move it even a couple inches. Sure we could blow it up, as I stated, but that would only cause more problems. We'd need to get to it long before we would probably know it's even hurtling towards us. At this point anyways. I'm sure that will change in the years to come.

Well, I'm sure at some point, if we're around long enough we'll have the capabilities to move an asteroid. I'd rather do that than attempt to obliterate it.

As would I and everyone else who realizes the problenms that would occur with 100 supermassive asteroids raining down on us rather than 1. :) Hopefully we'll figure it out eventually. At least before the big one hits. I think the one that is going ot be arriving in 2029 or whatever date it was is too late though. We only know a very small percentage of Earth crossing asteroids as it is.

If there was even a slight chance of it hitting, it would be blown up first.

how? Right now the technology to blow up an asteroid does not exist.

We would train some drillers to go up there and drill a hole, plant a bomb and blow it up from the inside. Simples.

actually theyb wouldn´t that would just make things worse because instead of having 1 meteorite they´d have hundrends, if apophis had a slight chance to hit the earth they would move it with some gravity thing to keep it away from the earth (the problem is that in order to do the gravity thing they need a few years so if we knew that it was going to hit us a few days before we are screwed)

BTW I knew about apophis before and the chances of hitting the earth are EXTREMLY low, there was a time when people thought it had a decent chance of hitting the earth (well actually it was a very low chance but people were worried because there was at least some risk) but then someone saw there was a mistake in the calculations and they saw the chances were VERY VERY low

Even if there was an asteroid headed our way, there's nothing we could do about it. Intercepting it would be a really tricky operation.

Blowing it up wouldn't cause more problems, it would help. Smaller chunks of rock would burn up in the atmosphere.

Yes but it still takes years to devolop certain technology, even with more money NASA wouldn't of been ready for such a mission.

Not possible. And even if it were, how would we then deal with the not one but, possibly hundreds or thousands, of smaller rocks heading right towards earth?

Botnus_Six

Scientists state otherwise. The atmosphere isn;t a be-all-end-all shield to oncoming space debris. If it was we wouldn't have all these asteroid impact, there wouldn't have been an asteroid that completely devastated parts of Syberia when it exploded and I would be hanging out with my buddy T-Rex Jr.

If we blow up a 900km asteroid it would blow up into many smaller chunks. Some of which would be large enough to hit Earth. We may have to deal with multiple oncoming potentially deadly asteroids as compared to one. We would have to change the trajectory of each of those asteroids that wouldn't burn up in the atmosphere. Remember this would be a miltibillion dollar mission. We can't just do that then decide to send up another volley a week later.

Just to play devil's advocate, do you really think that if they knew it was going to hit earth and destroy the vast majority if not all life and most certainly destroy human civilization as we know it, that they would tell us? The chaos that information would unleash would destroy us long before the comet/asteroid did. they would do exactly what they do in the movies, keep it quiet so they can begin preparing to salvage what they can of the best and brightest... and the richest.

[QUOTE="BumFluff122"]

[QUOTE="EMOEVOLUTION"]You are aware that humans have managed to land on a comet right? They launch a rocket into space, when the rocket coems close to the asteroid or comet they release a small capsule that f;ies down to the surace of the comet or asteroid. This has been done before. The only difference would be that within the capsule there would most likely be a nuclear warhead or something. It would blow backwards from the way it came tryign not to blow up the actual asteroid because then there would be millions of large pieces raining down on us. Instead they use the blast to change the direction of the comet or asteroid without actually blowing it up but as it is moving so fast and as this would have such a small effect on it they would have to alter it's trajectory very early on. IF we wanted to though we could very likely blow it up.

MushroomWig
No, humans haven't managed to land on a comet, only a small capsule. Crashing a small capsule onto a comet is a farcry from being able to actually destroy or deflect it enough to pass us by. I think certain people are suffering from "mankind fanboyism", thinking there isn't anything we can't do.

Y2K, 2012, Swine flu, Bird flu, and now asteriods hitting the Earth. I have come to the conclusion that people love living in paranoia. Maybe the media is to blame.

Or they'd send up Bruce Willis to drill a hole in it and plant some explosives so that it'd blow into two pieces each of which would miss the Earth...

But as Bruce Willis lands on the asteroid it is taken over by German space terrorist robbers! It's up to him, Milla Jovovich, and a baby voiced by Bruce Willis to take down the terrorists, and stop the virus from destroying the future. Too bad he's actually just a ghost.

But if we don't take objects in the outer space seriously, we won't be here to worry about the planet. Earth, the planet itself, will be fine. She's been here 4.5 billion years, she isn't going anywhere. We're just ants on the thinnest top layer.
