The city council of South America's biggest city has adopted legislation calling for a Heterosexual Pride Day to be celebrated on the third Sunday of each December. Sao Paulo Mayor Gilberto Kassab must sign the legislation for it to become law and has said only that he is studying it. His office declined Wednesday to say whether he supports the proposal. ========== The Brazilian Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, and Transgender Association criticized the legislation, saying it could provoke homophobic violence. "How many LGBTs will be attacked because of the message that only heterosexuality makes someone a moral person and a good citizen," the association said in a statement. "The celebration of heterosexual pride is inappropriate because it belittles the just cause of the LGBT community," the statement added. "Unlike homosexuals, heterosexuals are not discriminated against simply for being heterosexuals."

Source Other sources (admittedly, with more information): - Star Observer - Globo (if you can ignore some of the translation errors) So, OT, many of you have been wondering why there's never been a straight pride day. Now what do you think?

Well that's just kinda....................................... odd.

Besides we heterosexuals alas lack that carnival spirit - it just won't work.

As long as they allow the gays to participate. Heteros are always welcome in gay pride days/weeks/parades.

Right, because heterosexuals are frequently persecuted in society.

This kinda shows how ridiculus it is to have a day to celebrate the type of sex partner you enjoy. Any sort of pride day is rather strange.

I hope it will encourage some heterosexuals to come out of the closet. It must be quite the trauma having to spend years pretending to be gay for fear of retribution.

Right, because heterosexuals are frequently persecuted in society.

well i dont see why gay people need to have parades anyway these days since they are mostly no-longer persecuted. i mean you dont see any million man marches anymore. might as well give straight people a party just for the hell of it

Uh huhYou think so?You don't say. . . Tell me more. I almost forgot the most relevant one! From the Star Observer article: Brazil's LGBT community have long complained about ongoing homophobia in the country. There have been a number of homophobic attacks in Sao Paulo and a conservative politician, Jair Bolsonaro, said last April that if he had a gay son, he would beat him up until he started to behave "like a man".

Equal is Equal

No one should complain.

I remember when some kids(highschool) tried to have a day of silence for straights, after the schools day of silence for gays.

Several kids got suspensions.....

It does seem like it might prvoke a bit of anti gayness from people who take that day too far, but I think its not a big deal. Gay people want equality, well its not like there was a straight pride day, so I don't see it as a big deal (though it is a really pointless and unecessary thing).

Its kind of like having a Caucasian pride month though, so... I don't know, its odd.

I dont really see the point in any parades. Ill be honest im very pro gay rights now that ive met and known gays... but before then... the whole parading around practically naked thing was one of the major reasons i was less accepting in the past.

Gay Pride Day is already a problem in itself. I have no problem with homosexuality; homosexuals should stand up for themselves. However, I don't condone flamboyancy for the sake of facilitating attention to oneself. Its the same way I feel about celebrities who do outrages stunts to generate hype/attention.

what i mean to say, is that homosexuality is not as often persecuted as it used to be.

i mean yeah, there are alot of problem areas in the world were homosexuals are persecuted for their orientation/beliefs, but the same can be said for members of other races and basic human rights in general (hell, human slavery still exists).

thats a major kink in the gay rights movement im thinking. For alot of people that dont have a thriving gay population in their neighborhood... their only exposure is what the news covers, such as gay pride parades. And when viewing pictures from a gay pride parade most people probably dont think "oh they are just like us, and want basic civil rights" they think... "what is wrong with these people?"

I don't see the point in straight pride day. The thing about gay pride is that when you go outside 97% of people around you are straight, gay pride is the only time where you can be around other gay people outside of a gay bar.

Shocker, its a religious movement attempting to ban the gay pride day. Why do evangelicals try to create so much hate? It must be against god to promote hatred.

From article:

The city council of Sao Paulo, Brazil has approved a bill establishing a 'Straight Pride Day' after evangelical leaders pushed the measure when they were unable to get ride of the city's gay pride event.

Carlos Apolinário, the representative who championed the idea, had previously tried to get Sao Paulo's gay pride parade removed from the city's well-known Paulista Avenue.

So the "equal rights" comments are irrelevant.

We're in disagreement about how you choose to reply with a straw-man to people saying its silly to have a straight pride day/parade.

About their legal rights, no.

We're in disagreement about how you choose to reply with a straw-man to people saying its silly to have a straight pride day/parade.

I think it's rediculously silly to have a straight pride day, a gay pride day, a Puerto Rican day, etc, etc.

Well, we disagree on that too.

I cant know all the effects of such days (whether they might actually create a deeper division between groups of people for instance) but I dont think each and every one of such days are warranted and understandable.

[QUOTE="Planet_Pluto"]The motivation doesn't change the end result. Gays want a pride day, so they have to accept that other groups have their day in the sun as well.

The motivation changes everything. Its religious hatred simple as that.

So you would deny a group of people 'equal rights' because you don't approve of the group that is taking up the cause? Are you saying that all heterosexuals are filled with religious hate?

Of course not but the evangalists trying to do this certainly are. No one would care if an impartial group wanted a hetro pride day. But this is simply a religious thing.

Right. So you don't approve of the messenger, so you'd not consider the message. You'd deny the (alleged) "rights" of heterosexuals at the end of the day.
