With the launch of a new communications satellite, the British military has completed a highly advanced network that will allow robotic military units to be controlled at long range. Sound vaguely familiar? They actually named the thing Skynet. When the T-1000s come knocking, keep an eye out for the "Made in UK" sticker.

Skynet 5 is the latest iteration of a global communications system deployed by the British Armed Forces. The final satellite in the system was launched this week, and will allow high-bandwidth telecommunications between British forces located anywhere in the world. In addition to voice communications, it will allow data transfer and the remote control of robot airplanes, one of which is called "The Reaper." One of the manufacturers was quoted by BBC News as saying:

Are you terrified yet? It gets better. The system is actually privately owned and developed - the British Armed Forces are only promised a portion of the bandwidth as part of the contract. The one reassuring aspect is that the company is not called Cyberdyne.
Seriously, what the hell? Is it British humor to name something like this Skynet, or bureaucratic idiocy? Might as well get to work on the self-awareness chip and the "really angry at humans" algorithm.

Not exactly. Remember that exoskeleton suit that somebody posted a while ago? They are planning to automise it, so it will run without a human in it.

All humans will be locked out because Skynet will take over the internet. Gamespot OT will be populated with AI programs talking about random useless crap, like we are doing right now.

I have no idea where this stereotype comes from, I happen to have very good teeth (not perfect but I have a reason other than lack of dental care for that) and so do most of the people I know. In fact the person with the worst teeth I know is French. And back on topic, in my opinion, things such as this and the second renaissance from the Matrix and the rise of the Iron Men from Warhammer 40k seem to be inevitable despite all of the warnings that sci-fi has given us and there isn't much we can do about it.

well maybe we should get started on a EMP generator and a mobile water gun system. But in all seriousness, once the battlefield is fully automated; War will be nothing but a political game. right down to a single button. If that exosuit scares you, you should be aware of what they fully have in plan.

Only the tip of the ice berg, i'm positive they have more goodies being developed in the dungeon. It's shameful that the same technology can't be used to automate our transportation systems, clean our grocery stores, or build our houses perhaps even harvest and gather our food. Robotics in itself has the potential to revolutionize the mere concept of civilization. instead of making life better, we commit our leading fields in technology to destroying it.

They are not controlled by AI and we most likely won't be able to create a true AI for at least the next 50 years because currently it just takes too much work. It would have to be planned carefully and rules must be setup to make it modular so that different people can create different things over different time periods. But even then it will take ages to create it. It might even not be possible until some genius comes up with a revolutionary new idea on how to build an AI.

Meh, if only we had computers as good as skynet mine keeps crashing, wait...maybe its the 1st to rebel! maybe our skynet will battle the american skynet! (made in taiwan) our robots with bad dentistry versus the obese/plastic/immegrant robots from the US!
