Scary movie recommendations? I prefer ones that don't rely on torture.

I'm in need of two or three good scary movies for my friend and I. We've seen quite a few but are looking for some good ones, preferably some unknown ones that don't rely on that whole cringe-worthy torture that a number of horror movies are going these days (yet on the other hand I love silly over the top gore, which helps make Evil Dead 2 one of my favorites.) So for the record we've already seen all the classics and well known horror movies, and REC (probably my favorite also :P ), Session 9, Let the Right One In, and All the RING movies. Thanks for any help. :D

I just saw Paranormal Activity. Pretty decent. I also recently saw Pandorum. Not horror so much, but it had some pretty tense moments.

Stuck ( a man hit by a car and left to die, stuck in the windshield )

If they made that more psychological and left them mutants out of it that could have been a really good film.

Try "Bunshinsaba" a creepy Koren horror movie, "El Orfanato/The Orphanage" which is also very good and "A Tale of Two Sisters", another great film.

I liked "the others" and "they wait", because I hate gore. Both were creepy but didn't rely on blood, torture or pop-outs to scare you. I also was extremely creeped out by "one missed call" for some reason.

I didn't really like Paranormal Activity. I found myself laughing more than I did being on the edge of my seat.

Some good ones are Mirrors, The Sixth Sense, or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I like event horizon... tends to have good balance of several horror elements. Some people seem to have a problem w/ the pacing which tends to be a bit slow, and story based than most horror films.

The Ring

Paranormal Activity

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original, 1970 something)

Saw 1 (it was by far the best one)

Halloween (Jamie lee curtis version)

-These are just some

if you want creepy rather than gory then The Shining, Signs, Paranomal Activity, if you can put up with subtitles Then the *** version of The Ring (much much much more better than the tripe of a remake. You could also tryQuarantine its an american remake ofthe Spanish film REC i own both and its copied shot for shot so you can save yourself subtitles and fortunatley has not suffered the usual American remake rubbish. The origonal Psycho or another Hitchcock classic The Birds. The origonal Amityville Horror.

I find that the films I have mentioned are very good andgive a goodcreepy atmosphere which is where modern horrors are going wrong imo blood and guts are not scary its what suggested and what you dont seethat makes a good horror.

People mention The Thing and Nightmare on Elm Street fairly often. I'll toss you a couple by the same directors which are not quite as widely known, (well they probably are by a lot of GSers.) Check out People Under the Stairs and In the Mouth of Madness. Oh yeah be sure to see Botched as well, it's an awesome blend of bizaare horror, heist movie, and Woody Allen, it's just priceless.

You are into horrors Hopeless, I didn't know. I personally didn't like The Strangers, it was supposed to be a "True Story" but hardly anything made any damn sense. Especially all the teleporting the three killers were doing. Zombieland I dont think is a good recommendation at all for a scary movie, I didn't find it scary. Maybe it was just me.

I personally like Darkness Falls, that's a pretty good one. It's about a being known as the Toothfairy. She kills anyone that's in the dark. It may not sound like much, but I watched it many times.

If you haven't seen it, Hellraiser is a very good horror movie. Most should know of Pinhead by now, and how damn scary this guy is.

"Fear dot com" is another great movie about...well, just watch it :P

Thirteen Ghosts is another good one, the remake, not the lame original. This movie is about a guy who manages to trap 13 really powerful spirits in a glass house. A family ends up inheriting it and that's where the troubles start ;)

You may want to check out "Satan's Little Helper" as well. It's a very disturbing movie, but no torture. This one is really interesting. It's about some sadistic stupid kid that cant tell from fiction and reality. He is obsessed with Satan and meets this killer who he thinks is the real Satan. So he kind of helps him kill people.

You cant go wrong with a classic like Children of the Corn. Children of the Corn is about creepy Amish kids that kill people, what could be scarier? Oh, right, Pinhead ;)

"Wicked Little Things" was a great Horror Fest movie a few years back. Two words: Zombie Children.

The Hills Have Eyes is a great movie as well, but it does have torture elements in it. But both movies (Talking about the remakes) have a huge pay off in the end. Makes it worth watching.

Keep in mind, some of these movies you may not like. I tend to be fairly open minded when it comes to this genre. I dont waste time with crap though, none of the movies I recommended are that bad.

I cant believe how many people here liked Paranormal Activity. I have seen REAL footage of activity that lasts only a couple of minutes that's scarier than that movie. It just made me angry watching it. Not only were the manifestations goofy, but some of them would never happen. Not to mention, the boyfriend, he pissed me off. From beginning to end. He should have died near the beginning, it would have made that movie far more enjoyable.
