Well, they're still going to judge them for being poor, or any number of things. Ā It wouldn't really fix anything
They wouldn't know they are poor if they are dressing the same way as everybody does. There are other ways to tell if someone's poor or rich. Clothing isn't the only way.

I didn't mean uniforms. I meant schools making a big deal over nothing. I should've made that clear, sorry.

Ah, ok. I don't really know about that, as I don't live there.[QUOTE="lightleggy"][QUOTE="lostrib"]They wouldn't know they are poor if they are dressing the same way as everybody does. How is creativity suppressed? Clothing has nothing to do with creativity. Students in high school are not designing clothing either.Ā

How old are you? Because you probably don't have any idea how teenagers express themselves. I don't remember any teenager expressing themselves through clothing, clothing styles have nothing to do with your actual personality, as a teen (well I'm 19 so I guess technically I'm still a teen) I used to dress in "skater" clothes simply because I liked them even though I despised skating and skaters in general. Seriously before saying such bullshit about uniforms being bad 'cause they repress creativity, you should go visit an actual school with a dress code and see if the students over there are not creative or something.[QUOTE="deeliman"][QUOTE="WhiteKnight77"]How old are you? I am old enough to know what school is for and that creativity is not fostered in what a person wears. Clothing cannot write, compose music, paint a picture, set up a scene for a photograph or shoot a movie.
Sure, teens are starting to find out who they are, but clothes do not necessarily do that. They may speak of what you think you are, but they do not tell anyone how creative you are.
Shakespeare could have written his works while bare-assed naked, yet he still had a creative mind.Ā

Had plenty of classmates who experimented with their uniforms to stand out without breaking rules.

How about Japan?
They also go to school six days a week. They also only get about 6 weeks in the summer for a summer break with some places even less though the year is 198 days with breaks between the terms.Ā

Yes I know Japan does. Ā So does a lot of europe. Ā It was a rhetorical question with the intent of mocking the idea school uniforms by saying they're old-fashioned.

I think the problem is on the school's definition of "dress code".

Also, for people saying wearing a uniform can't suppress your creativity, THAT is bs. In my school there were people designing their own shirts and other stuff. Not saying this is the only way to be creative or that you cannot be creative if you go to school with a uniform. But how you dress can certainly be an outlet to express who you are so GTFO. Master_LiveI'd also like to point out that there's nothing stopping students from dressing like that outside of class. Whether there's any potential value in it or not, there's not any particular reason why it should be allowed in school. Here's the thing...even in schools that don't require uniforms, there's STILL usually a dress code of some kind that covers stuff like "no daisy dukes", "no bare mid-riffs" and "no gang symbols". Oh gee...isn't THAT suppressing the students' creativity too? If someone wants to go the lady Gaga route and wear a shirt made out of bacon, what business does the school have to tell them that they can't wear it?

Uniforms aren't old fashioned.:|[QUOTE="deeliman"][QUOTE="lightleggy"] School uniforms are perfectly fine, it actually helps to keep the students "banded together" and from judging each others by avoiding crap like "Oh you only have like 3 shirts you bring the same clothes every week!", "your clothes are horrible!", "omg you must be poor you're always wearing the same stuff", "you're just a superficial whore wearing those 200$ jeans!". The problem comes when the rules become ridiculously strict (girls not being able to dye/bleach their hair, having makeup banned, guys can't have long hair, etc....) Recently, I had to visit the high school which I attended to pick up some files for a certain application, anyway I found out that they make the rules more strict every year, now the male students can't even have a beard, not just a beard but facial hair in general, goatees, balbos, plain mustaches whatever, they can't grow facial hair, and the girl's skirts are now like ankle lenght lol glad I made it out of that place before anything like that happened to me.lightleggyMy school doesn't have uniforms and that stuff never happens, at least not that I know. And kids will find ways to bully each other, whether it's about their clothes or that they're fat etc. I'm pretty sure that a lot of kids would feel bad with themselves if they had to come with the same shirt 2 times a week and that a lot more would trash talk about them because of their lack of clothes. Uniforms help to hide class gaps, a poor student will have the same uniform as a rich one. Hell I'm in college and I only have 3 pants and 5 shirts while I rarely see my classmates repeating clothes for at least 3 months lol.
First of all, I believe students will still find ways to be mean to eachother.
Second of all, it takes out personality and a feeling of being yourself. Ā Choice is good
Third of all, Even if it worked as you say, it's kinda silly. Ā don't we need to learn about bullying and personality and all of that stuff at some point? Ā Should we all just go around dressing the same forever? Ā Adults judge too. Ā Lets not sugar coat it, lets raise or kids right, teach our kids right, and use some frikkin common sense.
Also, for people saying wearing a uniform can't suppress your creativity, THAT is bs. In my school there were people designing their own shirts and other stuff. School is designed for one thing and worrying about which trendy clothes is nowhere near the reason. Do clothes express who you are? They can, but do clothes really make a statement on who you really are? No. I could wear suits day in and day out, but that doesn't mean I am a stuffed shirt. Actions are what define a person.Ā
