The craft are powered by solar panels designed a long time ago, they power the crafts electronics and work fine even at the current distance, but once the craft reaches a certain distance the power it draws from the sun won't be enough. Future craft may designed that can make the journey quicker, and with new energy technologies maybe they can draw power from the photons in interstellar space, maybe. I mean I've heard it said that the heliosphere is like a bubble that protects the solar system from harmful cosmic rays, kind of like how the magnetosphere on earth protects earth from harmful cosmic and solar rays and charged plasma discharge from the Sun... anyhow, maybe with the right materials new panels can be produced that take energy from the high energy photons in interstellar space to further power any future craft they might send out after the voyager craft has exceeded its usefulness. Anyhow, I wouldn't say scientists hit a wall, if anything the craft has been out there 35 years, and will probably be in use for another decade or so; given our current technology and future technology we can do much better.lamprey263

Why not? If you remember Newton's laws of physics, a body in motion tends to stay in motion unless another force acts upon it. There is no drag in a vacuum to slow down a spacecraft that is moving at 38,610 MPH. According to Newton, that thing will keep flying until it hits an asteroid, comet, planet or star. Now whether it will actually be working at such a time is another matter.
