yeah, say anything you want about all the viruses it has (and btw dont mention YOU FORGOT ALL THE BRUE SCREENS OF DEATH! this isnt 1998 anymore..,BSOD have been extremely rare since XP) but its still the best OS out there...you dont have to break your head looking for software or making weird configurations to install something...seriously im currently using the crap which is ubuntu and its such a terrible OS! I seriously feel as if I were using DOS because its all so manual, you want to install something? you need to open the console and type a bunch of crap just to make something that on windows is achieved with double clicking the file...and not to mention all the incompatibilities it has.

I just wasted like 1 hour of my life trying to install java for ubuntu which seems to be impossible while it only takes less than 5 minutes in windows...

and in case you wonder...I Didnt asked for ubuntu, my brother installed it on this PC...but im switching to xp right now

This. If you can use Linux, you can be one impressive programmer. Plus, Linux is free, it's a freeware, something to be shared. I update the OS, someone else uses it, improves it, until we create one indomable OS. And note, this is coming from a guy that currently has Windows as his OS.

Theres value in specialized use-cases for alternative OS. Linux servers are still very popular and quite useful, especially when you need something even more lightweight than a Windows Server OS because i handles only a very specific function (like a custome built router-PC)

But for consumer use? Most people should stick with Windows. Mac might be nice for an older user who has little interest beyond basic web surfing since Mac does a much better job at hand holding. Of course, once you start to deviate from that hand holding path, it becomes signficantly harder than Windows to do something.

I used OS X for a long time. Started using Windows 7 last year. It's alright... but it still lacks the user friendliness of OS X. There are too many things in Windows that randomly go wrong for no apparent reason, like that God forsaken notification that keeps telling me that Java wants to update and then tells me, "actually, you're already up to date, do you want to reinstall the software". No, I don't. """" off Windows.

Windows is sluggish, in your way, slow, unstable, expensive, and insecure. The only thing I ever use Windows for is gaming. Linux is better at everything else.

Why do people always start sentences off with "seriously...."?

Your question wasn't that unbelievable.

Try playing with the settings via Control Panel > Mouse. I screwed around with the settings for days before I found a comfortable cursor speed. I'm sure you can find the right setting.

You know if you want you can install GUI components for Linux if you are not familiar with terminal and commands. I had some troubles with it when i started with it but now i am fine. linux is best for web browsing. i dont know why you are so cross with ubuntu. it looks better than Xp, its lighter and faster, free from viruses and intall add-ons and you can play games for windows on it.

If Operating Systems Ran The Airlines...

UNIX Airways

Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they come to the airport. They all go out on the runway and put the plane together piece by piece, arguing non-stop about what kind of plane they are supposed to be building.

Air DOS

Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again. Then they push again, jump on again, and so on...

Mac Airlines

All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't need to know, don't want to know, and everything will be done for you without your ever having to know, so just shut up.

Windows Air

The terminal is pretty and colourful, with friendly stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever.

Windows NT Air

Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much bigger planes, and takes out all the other aircraft within a 40-mile radius when it explodes.

Windows XP Air

You turn up at the airport, which is under contract to only allow XP Air planes. All the aircraft are identical, brightly coloured and three times as big as they need to be. The signs are huge and all point the same way. Whichever way you go, someone pops up dressed in a cloak and pointed hat insisting you follow him. Your luggage and clothes are taken off you and replaced with an XP Air suit and suitcase identical to everyone around you as this is included in the exorbitant ticket cost. The aircraft will not take off until you have signed a contract. The inflight entertainment promised turns out to be the same Mickey Mouse cartoon repeated over and over again. You have to phone your travel agent before you can have a meal or drink. You are searched regularly throughout the flight. If you go to the toilet twice or more you get charged for a new ticket. No matter what destination you booked you will always end up crash landing at Whistler in Canada.

OSX Air:

You enter a white terminal, and all you can see is a woman sitting in the corner behind a white desk, you walk up to get your ticket. She smiles and says "Welcome to OS X Air, please allow us to take your picture", at which point a camera in the wall you didn't notice before takes your picture. "Thank you, here is your ticket" You are handed a minimalistic ticket with your picture at the top, it already has all of your information. A door opens to your right and you walk through. You enter a wide open space with one seat in the middle, you sit, listen to music and watch movies until the end of the flight. You never see any of the other passengers. You land, get off, and you say to yourself "wow, that was really nice, but I feel like something was missing"

Windows Vista Airlines:

You enter a good looking terminal with the largest planes you have ever seen. Every 10 feet a security officer appears and asks you if you are "sure" you want to continue walking to your plane and if you would like to cancel. Not sure what cancel would do, you continue walking and ask the agent at the desk why the planes are so big. After the security officer making sure you want to ask the question and you want to hear the answer, the agent replies that they are bigger because it makes customers feel better, but the planes are designed to fly twice as slow. Adding the size helped achieve the slow fly goal.

Once on the plane, every passenger has to be asked individually by the flight attendants if they are sure they want to take this flight. Then it is company policy that the captain asks the passengers collectively the same thing. After answering yes to so many questions, you are punched in the face by some stranger who when he asked "Are you sure you want me to punch you in the face? Cancel or Allow?" you instinctively say "Allow".

After takeoff, the pilots realize that the landing gear driver wasn't updated to work with the new plane. Therefore it is always stuck in the down position. This forces the plane to fly even slower, but the pilots are used to it and continue to fly the planes, hoping that soon the landing gear manufacturer will give out a landing gear driver update.

You arrive at your destination wishing you had used your reward miles with XP airlines rather than trying out this new carrier. A close friend, after hearing your story, mentions that Linux Air is a much better alternative and helps.

Windows 7 Airlines:

In effect a cunning corporate-takeover rebranding of Windows Vista Airlines with a new paint-job on all of the oversized over-slow planes. Some of the annoying in-flight bugs have been fixed, but it's still basically the same. Plus, when you bought the ticket, you later found that because of an administrative flaw in the airline booking system you had already paid for a duplicate ticket on Windows Vista Airlines, which you now don't need.

Linux Air

Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself.

When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, "You had to do what with the seat?"

I have been using Linux for the past 5 years and, in comparison, Windows is inefficient and insecure. Your problems with Linux arise from the fact that you are used to Windows, once you get used to Linux it actually becomes easier than Windows (at least that happened to me). And you don't have to use the console to install a program, Ubuntu has a GUI for the package manager which further confirms you don't really know how to use it and that's why you are having so much trouble. Likewise, installing java is just installing the sun-java packages from the repository. The package repository is one of the main advantages distros like Ubuntu have over Windows, you can install any program you need from there and they are checked for compatibility and security issues, with Windows you have to go on a browser and look for the programs in the internet which makes it much more insecure and prone for viruses and unreliable stuff. Besides that, Windows is incredibly expensive for what it is and it has a lousy design which makes it much more inefficient (lags and crashes in time) in comparison to Unix OSs like Linux which are much more robust and they use resources more efficiently.

I'm fine with Windows. One of my big uses for my computer is to play video games, so having Windows as my operating system makes sense.

That said, if I was to get a laptop, It'd have to be a Mac. I really like the way they're set up for what I'd want in a laptop, and I'm not too concerned about the price.
I'd still dual boot Windows to make sure that any program I come across that I want to run I could (I think my siblings occasionally run across some programs their universities want them to use that, even though a large amount of people have Macs, aren't supported on Macs).

I don't really have any interest in Ubuntu.
