Except that's not what's happening at all. This isn't a case of... "Yeah, we just arrested some people that were clearly committing a crime and later found out they were here illegally. Who knew!" It's more like... "Yeah we just detained a bunch of Mexicans on account of them being Mexicans and acting all Mexican and interrogated them until they admitted to be illegals. Now we can ship 'em back were they came from." The above quote is what Arpaio is condoning. I've lived in Southwest AZ for 4 years and he's supported this countless times. In fact, judging by the number of times your quote has basically been restated, I doubt most of the people in this thread even read the article, let alone have any idea what the issue at hand is. Well, considering this whole debate is on the verge of turning into a tit-for-tat flame fest, I may as well joke about it.

On topic: I'd suggest going for the employers first. Lack of jobs should get most of the illegals to leave. After that? Closing down loopholes in the societal safety-nets would be a good bet, along with aggressive prosecution of the leaders of sanctuary cities (arrests, cutting funds, etc). Mass deportation should be a last resort.

Immigration to the U.S. has actually slowed since the recession. Increased competition for jobs=fewer jobs=fewer people immigrating to acquire emplyment. Addressing jobs is addressing the root cause, what Arpaio is doing is making zero impact on immigration itself.

Latinos are profiled because there is an epidemic of illegal immigrants and the USA is bordered by Mexico. The only real way to catch illegals consistently is to check. I can see how it would annoy the legal citizens who get checked, but it is a necessary evil.

Majority of illegals are latino - fact

Therefore resources should be directed mainly towards latinos who are going to be the most likely to be illegal.

The problem with the law isn't the targeting of illegals, it's the potential for abuse by harrassing citizens who's skin is the wrong pigmentation.
