As many as 13 people were killed and 20 injured in a shooting at a community college in south-western Oregon, emergency officials said.

Oregon attorney general Ellen Rosenblum told NBC that 13 people were killed, while earlier state police Lt Bill Fugate told KATU-TV that seven to 10 people were dead and at least 20 others were injured.

Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin would not confirm how many people were killed or injured in the shooting during a press conference on Thursday.

“I’ve heard varying numbers and I don’t want to report on a number that is inaccurate,” Hanlin said.

He said that the shooter was a male and that he was deceased. He said he did not know if the gunman was a student.

“There was an exchange of gunfire, the shooter threat was neutralized and officers continued to sweep the campus looking for other threats,” Hanlin said.

The fire district said on Twitter that “multiple casualties” had been transported from the scene. CNN reported that a local hospital is expecting an “unknown number” of patients.

PeaceHealth hospital in Springfield shared information about three patients who suffered gunshot wounds in the incident. Two of the patients are females, aged 18 and 34, and the third patient’s age and gender are unknown. All were transported by helicopter from the campus to the hospital.

Damn.

This stuff happens too much.

R.I.P. to those who lost their lives.

Hopefully this thread stays civil.

Trouble is what can I say.

I don't want to get into a gun topic, I don't want to compare our UK colleges to your US, the shear mention of this makes it sound like I'm trying to make some kind of point, but what I want to say, without becoming a generic "sorry for everyone involved" is how I sincerely hate the fact that collages and places of promising youths at such a great moment of their lives have to become the target of some random asshole. If they have a problem, take it to a military base or a police station, take it to a a conference, not a college.

20 more are injured... This thread will become another gun control debate, and I have to admit, I'm starting to question my own stance on second amendment rights. While I still maintain that banning assault weapons is meaningless, I'm starting to think that we should support greater gun control measures.

Other than that, my thoughts go out to the deceased, the injured, and their families and friends. Things like this shouldn't even happen in schools.

After Sandy Hook I've given up any hope of meaningful change happening with gun legislation. If a bunch of white privileged kids can get gunned down and even that doesn't enact change, nothing will.

They didn't say. Didn't confirm how many deaths or that there was a second shooter either. Still early.

And no meaningful change will come with this. Our society will continue to stick their heads in the sand rather than sit down and acknowledge that we have some SERIOUS issues that need to be worked out in American society....

This sort of tragedy always saddens me. It's worse knowing that the only thing that will happen is people will feel bad for a week, forget, and move on. Then they will repeat when it happens again.

Yeah. Our young folks spend too much time with eyes glued to their devices instead of learning to socialize with real people. They're not learning how to deal with frustration and failure.

It's just like some of my younger team members. First sign of failure and they drop the course instead of persevering to raise the grade to passing.

Or, they'll slack off. Then, when I give them an honest appraisal of their performance (or lack of), they get pissed off. Stupid kids.

.....always an attitude of instant gratification.

I don't want to be part of a "guns/no guns" debate, but when a problem is this rampant, maybe it's time to search for solutions instead of just calling it a tragedy and a day each time?

My relationship to Israel is similar to your relationship to Bosnia and I consider it my country. Similar, not equal, before we start to nitpick here.

Well, I don't know. You sound like an American almost. I guess Canada doesn't have many interesting problems in comparison.

In USA, no one cares. It is a hopeless feeling. No one will help you when you get bullied. The victims only want revenge after months of bullying. They can't fight back with fists because they are weaker. No one cares about them. The only way is to buy guns and revenge.

They blame everyone, including useless teachers and useless by standards. They will shoot everyone to make a point that, if

That's one more thing. All institutions (not just learning) should have an anti-bullying policy. You never know when a bullied person will snap and retaliate with deadly force. It doesn't even have to be a gun. There are many things that can be used to kill, even cars.

That is not at all what I am referring to....

We have nothing in terms of mental health care in this country. We continue to act like mental illness doesn't exist so we let troubled people sit there and fall deep into an abyss of craziness until they end up doing shit like this. Every single incident like this could have been prevented with some fucking intervention to get these people help before it was too late. At the very least they could be identified and kept away from guns.

But there in lies the other issue, we refuse to take a look at who we allow to purchase weapons. It blows my mind that someone like George Zimmerman is allowed to own a fucking weapon. He keeps having repeated incidents where he is pulling weapons on people, but is allowed to retain the right to own a weapon do to fucking loophole after loophole. He shouldn't have had a fucking weapon to murder Teryvon with, but because he took a plea deal after assaulting a cop he was able to keep that privilege. He has since murdered someone and has REPEATEDLY been accused of pulling a gun out on people during arguments but because he isn't getting slapped with a conviction he can keep on doing that shit.

That kid who shot up the church in Carolina should NOT have been allowed to purchase a weapon, but because they dragged their feet doing his background check, he is still somehow legally allowed to buy the gun. Shit like that is absolutely despicable and needs to change. This isn't even going into the worst part, where anyone can just walk into a gun show and purchase a fucking weapon without any background check. It baffles me that we have these loopholes in place and it just begs to question why they even try saying there are restrictions on weapon purchasing when all restrictions can be so simply stepped around...

Watch, this person will turn out to be another troubled individual who those around them have known something was wrong for some time. But nothing was done and now we have more people murdered because of it.

The problem is how do you make effective procedures to catch the truly mentally ill? That German pilot who flew his airline into a mountain was mentally ill. Yet, he still managed to circumvent procedures designed to catch people like him.

That part is for people smarter than me to figure out.

In general, just more mental health care being available will not only help on that front, but help make our society healthier overall and not just mentally, but physically as well.

There is nothing wrong with having issues and people need to learn to accept mental illness as part of life. The VAST majority of time people who are mentally ill are only a danger to themselves. Problem is you get certain cases where it can become an absolute disaster like Columbine. Those kids MAY have had a chance to not go down in such infamy (albeit they are a pair I see as maybe being beyond help, but still) but we will never know because they were allowed to just sit there and rot away in their collective hole until we ended up with tragedy.

And the outcome of this will be as followed.

  • Gun debate starts.
  • NRA go full on " They're gonna take your guns"
  • Gun owners go to buy more guns as a result of NRA
  • Gun store sales increase.
  • It is forgotten within a month or two and the debate just kind off stops.

Just like the other times a shooting has happened.

I'm starting to be nervous to go to work every day, on a community college campus, especially in an area where gun rights are taken very seriously. It's only a matter of time before something goes down at my school or another like mine in our state.

It doesn't matter that guns aren't allowed on campus. That wouldn't stop a shooter from coming on and causing damage. We've already had training on how to deal with an active shooter, and that was two years ago. You would think that, because of the awareness of campuses about such situations, that the number of school shooting would decrease, but the opposite has happened.

Whether it's about help for those mentally ill, or gun control, something has to be done to curtail these massacres.

And the outcome of this will be as followed.

  • Gun debate starts.
  • NRA go full on " They're gonna take your guns"
  • Gun owners go to buy more guns as a result of NRA
  • Gun store sales increase.
  • It is forgotten within a month [week] or two and the debate just kind off stops.

Just like the other times a shooting has happened.

True.

Air, my true cuddly bear

They took you you away without a final look

Threw the book

My heart use to soar, now that is only lost lore

I'm empty at my core

People talk a lot about mental health, but I'm not sure all of it is truly mental illness. Some of it is, of course. But I think with some of these shooters it's more a sense of alienation and isolation and not fitting in than it is an issue with mental illness per se. Then of course there are ideological factors: The news reporter who shot his colleagues did so partly as a retaliation for the Charleston shooting, and the Charleston shooter was partly motivated by white-power ideology, Nidal Hassan and the D.C. Snipers were motivated by Islamic extremism, etc.

The most recent theater shooting occurred right after the Aurora theater shooter was sentenced, so he was probably triggered by the media coverage of that shooting. Of course constant media attention on these shootings may give other unstable people the idea of pulling off something similar, so maybe the feds should ban the national media from covering these types of stories.

I don't think sweeping mass shootings under the rug is exactly a solution to bring down the rate of the shootings.
