Not a difficult question, should employers be allowed to ask what your ethnicity is on employment applications? Would it be better if such a question was made illegal and all they had to go off was your qualifications? If ethnicity isn't needed for successful completion of the job, should they be allowed to ask since it is not relevant to the job they are hiring for? I am non-white and don't see a reason why I should care if it's not directly needed to complete the job. (Yes, some actually require it) I also wondered if some would agree with France on not asking such a question for the census. Personally, I don't think that is helping them much and goes too far. But that isn't relevant to the poll, but you can answer anyway if you want.

Due to a law dating from 1872, the French Republic prohibits performing census by making distinction between its citizens regarding their race or their beliefs

Generally, no. Although canny employers will often be able to narrow it down if an applicant is called Wei Long or Mohammed, for example.

On a census it's fine, since the purpose is to find out the make-up of the population. That sort of data can have an impact on services the government offers and the data set is so large that it's unrealistic for them to start picking on people.

Why not, is there something wrong with getting some background information from an employee? We are not robots.

It would not, however it just seems like people have a fear of saying what their ethnic background is.

If a company is in the habit of hiring strictly on a person's qualifications and doesn't discriminate in spite of a person's qualifications, then no.

Depends on the job. For example modeling and acting needs people with specific looks.

For most jobs it shouldn't matter as that person is the most qualified.

They should only be allowed to ask if they can reasonably show how it is relevant to the job.

I don't see any reason why it needs to be. But either way, if you have an interview and the interviewer is a racist, they'll judge you by your race whether you want them to or not.

Considering that the employer is going to be voluntarily choosing and then paying the employee, they should be free to ask anything they want and then act upon the answer as they see fit (as long as they do not mug people showing up for interviews of course).

They ask a lot of irrelevant things. Hobbies, for instance. I don't really see the need to make complicated laws regarding what can be asked on an application form.

The problem I have with employers asking for ethnicity is discrimination. Some will actually go out of their way to hire a person of a certain ethnicity over somebody else who can simply do the job better. We have something like this in Canada when it comes to government jobs and first nations people, the government will go out of its way to pay these people through university/college and then offer them accelerated programs so they can get hired faster above other people. It is pure racism in my opinion.

To make sure they only ask things relevant to the job or things required for legal and tax purposes. Do you really want them asking you when you lost your virginity and to who? Why they hell would they need to know that?

TopTierHustler
I asked mostly based on when companies ask based on racial quota reasons. Affirmative Action has been enforced in the USA and Canada like that. Acting does require it, companies will also hire based on it when they are dealing in diverse areas so they can better understand the community. Not sure it is really needed all the time, a little research can tell you not to sell beef in India.

Here in Canada it is illegal to ask age, gender, sexual orientation, religion or ethnicity... but if you are a member of the female gender, a visible minority or are of aboriginal heritage, you are encouraged to proclaim as such to gain special privileges not related to skills or experience over white males in the hiring process. Political correctness in action folks.

Yeah it sucks. I've heard it's equally bad in the USA with their "Affirmative Action" plans. I've never understood how people claim that discriminating against a certain class can bring equality for all.

Im also canadian and its truly unfair to white males. Natives get free schooling, no taxes and a bunch of other benefits that i dont. Foriengers from other countries(mostly china/pakistan) get tons more benefits than white males. Its unfair and like someone else said...racist. I agree that the white man is the real minority with being stuck with all the taxes/bills to pay for all the free education, welfare, health etc thats given away to people who dont earn it. All they have to do is b**** and moan about us stealing their land and they get millions of dollars. Just a couple years ago every native person in ontario(atleast) got somewhere in between 10-30K each if they lived on a reserve. Why? No reason. Just because they complained and our government caved in and gave in to their demands that the white man ruined their lives.

Sure I suppose... If certain hirings undermine their business... I mean if you operate a department store in the middle of Hickville, RacistTown, USA; hiring minorities would hurt your business there.

I am in a wheelchair and I look at it from the Americans with Disabilities Act perspective... People aren't allowed to disciminate disabled folk so long as it isn't a detriment to their business... For example, if the business operates out of a multiple story building and don't have an elevator... To accomadate me they would need to install an elevator costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and get a license for said elevator. I understand them not hiring me because of that. Or a business in an old building needing to get to wider door frames in every doorway, or instal ramps, etc... If it causes undue harm to the business, then I wouldn't want them to hire me anyways as that would be entirely selfish...

But by installing a lift, they wouldn't just accommodating you, they'd be accommodating many, many wheelchair bound folk, which can also be good for business.

An old friend of mine named Joshua used to work as a phone salesman. It did'nt take long for him to start introducing himself as David instead, for the sake of increasing sales.

Food for thought right there, but IDK..... It's not really a black/white consideration.

Only in acting, since an actor must be similar to the character they are playing. STAR_Admiral
Tell that to the casting directors who had Samuel L Jackson playing Nick Fury and Michael Clarke Duncan playing The Kingpin.

Oh, and can't forget when Ludacris played Jim Bravura in Max Payne.

Actually... In the case of Nick Fury, it's because he's based on SJ in the Ultimate universe.

Not repealed, restricted, because it does help the less fortunate that work really hard but cannot afford a good education, because the people with better credentials should get in, but if a minority and a majority have the same credentials, the minority should get in to diversify the school. That is the goal of affirmative action.
