Not repealed, restricted, because it does help the less fortunate that work really hard but cannot afford a good education, because the people with better credentials should get in, but if a minority and a majority have the same credentials, the minority should get in to diversify the school. That is the goal of affirmative action.layton2012

It doesn't work like that.

There needs to be a push to repeal affirmative action, or what it should really be recognized as; punishment for people that work harder than others.

Education should be funded through taxes. That's the only way to avoid the caste system.

In the US at least Race is a protected class. You cnanot bee fired or refused employment because of it. Asking sucha question opens up the company to possibly liability and legal reprecusisons if someone can convince a judge/jury that the reason they didn't hire you is because you checked the "Africna American" chekc box.

I dont really see a problem with it. Say you work in Waikiki where their are lots of Japanese tourist, makes sense to hire a Japanese/American...

Only in acting, since an actor must be similar to the character they are playing. STAR_Admiral
I thought that would fall under the definition of acting. I think only physical appearance should really matter when an actor is considered for a role, as opposed to their actual ethnic background.

The only time it should be relevant is in the filming career.

I could imagine it would be useful in social-care/interpretation jobs when you need an interpreter to work with minorities that can't speak English. Border patrol officers for instance often have to make house visits to interview or help people who can't speak or read English well (in the UK anyway). In these cases ethnicity is useful because it helps the immigrant they are working with relate to the border patrol authorities.

There are also some other cases where the employer might what to hire you quickly but can't because of the slow visa process if you have a particular ethnic background. For instance as if you go to work in India as and you have a Pakistani background you will find that getting a working visa will take several more weeks/months than if you didn't. For a company that wants someone to fill a position quickly, I think they'd be in the right to refuse you if they felt they could get someone else through the visa process quicker.

Generally speaking though I wouldn't want the interviewer to feel intimidated to ask me about those things in a light banter-ish kind of way. I would take exception to that information being used either for or against me in the application process where it didn't matter.

Yes, because I'll be damned before I'm told by the government that I can't hire only white heterosexual atheist males like me. Discrimination is a right!

Tell that to the casting directors who had Samuel L Jackson playing Nick Fury and Michael Clarke Duncan playing The Kingpin.

Oh, and can't forget when Ludacris played Jim Bravura in Max Payne.

What if they wanted to portray those characters as such? What if they wanted Wonder Woman to be played by a woman? Wouldn't it make sense that the director would discriminate based on sex or whatever characteristic he damn well pleases to discriminate based on?

If you took these non-discrimination laws any further, I couldn't marry only white women. I'd have to give equal consideration to non-whites and men. Why should my employer be forced to hire me because I'm "qualified" if he doesn't want an atheist working for him? You know what, I don't want to work for him. It should go both ways.

it's not racist to believe that ethnicities are presdisposed to certain traits. i'm not saying one is better than the other.

Pre-disposition and actual work-ethic are two very different things though, and should be considered as such.

I guess it depends on the job. If you were going to be a spokesperson for Latinos of america, they may want to know you ethnicity beforehand.

No, they shouldn't be allowed to. It would be reverse discrimination in cases where it was used to help minorities, and in other cases it could hurt minorities.
