Of course it should be illegal, people should only be able to think or say things that are doubleplusgood.pis3rch
this one :P
You mean in the U.S.? Well, that would be going against the 1st Amendment, and I always thought that to be one of America's prides and joys, which contrary to popular belief, is not as abused nearly as much as it is claimed. In fact, many things that would have been considered treason or vulgar 60+ years ago are no longer so. So, as just as much as I hate it (along with 9/11 conspiracy theories), it must be tolerated, as not doing so is grounds for fascist tendencies. If you think the U.S. is already fascist, you don't know what fascism is.
[QUOTE="II_Seraphim_II"]yeah sure, and they should implement thought police while their at it :?pis3rchDid you say that because of what I said or was that an awesome coincidence? Coincidence :P
I think while we are at it, it should be illegal for people to think racist thoughts. So when im walking down the street and some random white guy looks at me in a manner that could potentially be deemed under extreme circumstances, as being racist, he should get locked up immediately! I can only imagine how people in the countries were ThoughtCrime Beta is effective must live in fear. Now its Holocaust denial, but the mark's been made, and its very easy to go down a slippery slope from here. Next thing you know you could be arrested for having an opinion that goes against the government, because this is practically what the law is. You are being punished for not being part of the hive mind. I don't agree with Holocaust deniers, but its their right to deny it. Same as with racists. I don't agree with their mentality, but its their right to have it. Forcing a racist to be around people he hates wont change him, it will only make him worse. People need to change their stance on their own, they cant be forced into it.
Illegal? The holocaust is a form of mistreatment and torture of the many forms the jews were exposed to during the Nazi rule. Why would they ever make it illegal to not believe it? Unless they needed this kind of info for courts to accuse people of such acts same as what's happening in Guantanamo bay. Details as whether the guards forced the detainees to do obscene and inhumane acts or just violated some rules are necessary because every single act could be considered a crime and the more acts, the more crimes a person has. Only the difference is that the second is a fact because duh! Everyone has seen the pics.
personally I do not think that holocaust denial should be made a crime, that may surprise some people, because I have family members whowere holocaust victims and survivors.
so why do I not think it should be criminalised..... because then it would make me as bad as the holocaust deniers trying to silence my opinion on the matter.
locking people up for their opinions is what that mad dictator did, and I do not want to go to his level
I thought, at least in the US, free speech was limited to things that do not cause disturbances. Like shouting "Fire!" in a public building where there is no fire, publicly denying the Holocaust will likely generate unrest and whatnot.

In Ann Arbor, Michigan the KKK does a demonstration every year and they have to be protected by police because people throw stuff at them.
People argue that holocaust denying causes no immediate harm but it does cause harm in the long run. Denying one the biggest tragedies of human history is detrimental to how we'll handle things in the future.munu9
You could say that about anything...
The only words that aren't protected under free speech are words that DIRECTLY incite dangerous actions, like the other guy already said.
I think it should be because of the horrors of the event in question, hisotry proves it happens and to deny that is stupidity and stupdity in that sense should be illegal.cousin_eddyThis would be the precursor to more dangerous laws. Right now its Holocaust denials. How about if the government does something despicable, and it becomes illegal to even talk about it? Then pretty soon it could be illegal to be against the government. Its a slippery slope. The moment you have such a law, you have officially opened Pandora's Box and there is no closing it.
The Holocaust deniers are stupid, but it definitely shouldn't be illegal to deny it.
I, however, think it was over exaggerated. There were only 4 million Jews in Europe at the time. Though I may be misinformed.
because of the freedom of speech it should stay legal. Any holocaust denial is considered idoitic anyways and nobody takes them serious.mayforcebeyouFreedom of speech isn't universal. You can easily limit something like "fighting words", which some would contend holocaust denial could be construed as in some cases.
If you deny the right to protest something, no matter how heinous, you open the way for the suppression of all information. Like it or not, there are going to be people who deny the Holocaust occured or existed, despite the massive evidence to the contrary. If you allow the government to suppress them, then you should be ready to be suppressed yourself. It's the same way I feel about all people who peddle in hatred and lies, like Holocaust deniers and the WBC: I'd rather see the people themselves suppress theminstead ofthe government passing a law to the same effect.
The Holocaust deniers are stupid, but it definitely shouldn't be illegal to deny it.

ghoklebutter
....6 Million Jews (well 6 million died, there were some that lived so I couldn't tell you how many more that lived were at the camps) were tortured, gased, beaten, starved, electricuted, shot, burned alive, had horrible experiments performed on them(Dr. Mengle, look him up)....and another 5 million Gypses, mentally ill, Catholics, Homosexuals, and other people who Hitler disliked suffered the same fate. That Holocaust isn't overexaggerated. I don't think anything can really put how terrible the even was unless you saw it with your own eyes. Go read the book Night, go to the Holocaust mesuem in Washington D.C. ect. In the book Night the author(Elie Wiesel) describes that he had his gold tooth extracted from his mouth in a camp....with a rusty spoon.
If difference of opinion complaints led to fines, all Jehovah's Witness members would be dead broke :PNot jail, but fines would be fine with me if people began to complain about that person.
