i can't tell whether or not this is sarcasm, but yes, marriage is a religious ceremony and it really shouldn't be recognized or endorsed by our government.

maybe it used to be a religious ceremony, but nowadays is a government property

it's a legal spider web, therefore it is pointless and stupid

two people who love each other need nothing more than the love between them, to keep them together, stupid ceremonies not needed

Marriage has very little to do with religion. It has more to do with connections of socio/economic status in the community. So it should be controlled by the state, but only if they don't allow elements of religion into it. Which they are.

if it isn't religious than why doesn't the state allow marriage between a man and a man? or a man and an animal? or an animal and an animal? or an animal and a baseball? or a baseball and a baseball? it's not a little religious, it's VERY religious.

If I couldn't get married then I'd never have kids... and I want kids. I'm getting married and could care less if it's state approved. It's God ordaining the marriage that I care about.

Look in the other debate pertaining to this subject if you want to see my opinions on this subject.

A man and a man, because they're bigots. A man and an animal, because it's considerd to be animal abuse. An animal and an animal, because animals don't give a damn. An animal and a baseball, think about things before you say them. A baseball and a baseball, use your common sense.

legal perks. gays also want those legal perks, but for some reason they won't give it to them (clearly an act of discrimination). we should just ban marriage as a legal practice and be done with it.

It can be.

Even if (and I say if) marriage was, at first, a religious concept, it is no longer the case. In order for your marriage to be recognized, you must have it go through the state. You need a legal witness. You need to sign a marriage certificate. For all intents and purposes, even religious marriage is just civil marriage.

LOL how could a being who doesn't exist even care to begin with

indoctrination makes people think they are violating some magical law of a magical man in the magical sky LOL

marriage has no supernatural power, it's a fantasy world where chicks get to live out their fantasy of trapping a man into a legal agreement, it's like a virtual chokehold, chicks dig that kind of thing LOL power trippin

gays aren't all bigots and even if they were, thats not a reason to negate them from the marriage process if a marriage process is indeed recognized by the government. Inter-species relationships have proven to be joyful and consensual -- look at mules (even though that might not be the greatest example). baseballs have feelings too, if you know that they don't then you must be a baseball. "I think, therefore I am" the only existence you can prove is your own.

it's a religious process no matter if you do it at a hotel, a beach, or a roller coaster. even if you don't pray at a wedding, marriage itself holds religious implications.

no it dosn't, signing a document has none, as far as the state is concerned it has none, it only has religous implications if you have it done by a church which sees it that way

Marriage is just the religious ceremony. You are still being bound together by a legal contract which the government is obligated to abide. The state doesn't adopt the "marriage" it adopts the legally binding union between two consenting adults.

Not always... Sometimes the reason why people are married is because of religion, at least on the outside, but more often than not there is some secular purpose behind it.

Some of the people in this thread need a reality check.

I know it's not cool in school to respect other people's opinions, but wow.

Some of you are taking this to a whole new level.

[QUOTE="Greatgone12"]A man and a man, because they're bigots. A man and an animal, because it's considerd to be animal abuse. An animal and an animal, because animals don't give a damn. An animal and a baseball, think about things before you say them. A baseball and a baseball, use your common sense.TheFlameProof
gays aren't all bigots and even if they were, thats not a reason to negate them from the marriage process if a marriage process is indeed recognized by the government. Inter-species relationships have proven to be joyful and consensual -- look at mules (even though that might not be the greatest example). baseballs have feelings too, if you know that they don't then you must be a baseball. "I think, therefore I am" the only existence you can prove is your own.

I might not have mad this clear, but I was actually calling the state bigots.

And we have proven that baseballs do not think, beyond reasonable doubt.
