Does it matter?
The people that want to do anyway.

No. Its how theaters get money. I don't see other entertainment venues allowing me to bring outside food. Theme parks, professional sports games, etc don't allow me to bring outside food. Outside food can be anything, and it might not be pleasant to clean after.
It doesn't matter if you're allowed or not, people always will bring stuff in.
I'm going there to see a film for $10, I don't need to go into debt in the name of snacks. theaters would make more of a profit if they sold more at a slightly lower price.
one of the funniest things ive seen at a movie theateris some 30 year old heavy set woman bringing in a bag of microwave popcorn looking left and then right as she squirts butter secretly in her plastic sandwich bag filled with popcorn
I used to work at an AMC and they allowed outside food as did all the other AMCs. The managers actually told me that they didn't even know where people got the idea that they were not allowed to
i used to go on dates and bring taco bell into the theater and people used to look at me wierd but I felt like a badass. lol

AMC is a particular chain of theaters. I used to have one in my area.
No. It's way annoying having someone bust out a burger or pizza. I'd go with friends that would buy consession stand stuff and it was way annoying having them wrestle with the plastic packaging in the middle of the movie. Popcorn and fountain drinks are fine, I hardly notice them but anything else is really annoying, especially the nachos that my theater sells. Also the amount of trash left over after the movie is done is rediculous. I can only imagine how the theaters would look if people could bring in whatever they wanted. Not to mention the time it would take to clean the theater up with all that extra trash.
What they could do is put ticket prices up by a small amount (an extra $1.50?) and include free medium popcorn and a medium drink. Thus people wouldn't really need to bring in outside food if they're getting some for free; plus it could encourage them to buy more food from the cinema if they think they're likely to run out. Sorted.
Also, they need to slash their pick 'n' mix prices. They're crazy.
I'm a pretty cheap person...If go to the movie theaters I always go to the mid-day showings (no annoying people) and never get anything to eat.I usually don't even go to the movie theater unless it is a movie I absolutely can't wait for.
I guess if I was really hungry I would probably sneak something in.
i would settle for a small popcorn and drink. What they could do is put ticket prices up by a small amount (an extra $1.50?) and include free medium popcorn and a medium drink.

Even though it's not allowed I still bring my own stuff there all the time and they don't seem to care. I even brought in a Super Big Gulp from 7-11 and placed it on the coutner, right where the woman was standing so I could get my ticket, so it was impossible for her not to see it. I'm pretty sure they don't care. Some of the employees even help me sneak it in by saying "Hey put that away, don't let anyone see it," or "You should put that in your back pocket, harder to see." Two of them even laughed hysterically after seeing my friend's pocket stuffed with a large box of Mike & Ikes sticking out from the top, and pointing and saying "Hey, good job."
I will admit that I do despise the overpriced concessions there but it somewhat makes sense to me now because I recently read that most of the profits come from the concessions, for revenue on movie tickets themselves must be shared with the film distribution companies. So it makes sense why concessions and ticket prices are so high.
a theater's main source of income isnt from selling movie tickets. it's from concessions... so it's understandable that they wouldn't want you to bring in other food, because they want you to buy theirs
Well, obviously. But maybe they should find a new business model instead of gouging people.a theater's main source of income isnt from selling movie tickets. it's from concessions... so it's understandable that they wouldn't want you to bring in other food, because they want you to buy theirs

I work at a theatre and I've never been told to stop anyone with outside food so I don't have a problem with it, unless it's something more than a snack treat, because I gotta clean that up.
While this goes against what I would normally say in a similer situation, in this case I voted yes. For myself and my wife to go to our local movie theatre tickets are $13.00 for use both. The number nine special ie.. a large bucket of popcorn, two cokes and some resses pieces cost around $25.00. That said, the candy is like $2.50 at the Target next door so that leaves $22.50 for some stale popcorn and two watered down cokes. The theaters cost on said popcorn and cokes i'm sure is a dollar or less.
All that said, I want to say no but considering the amount of mark up it's just plane robbery and at some point a slap in the face of the consumer. Yeah it's my choice to buy it or not, but then if I don't I've got previews suggestive selling it and the smell of everyone else eating it that trys to pursuade me.
Now if the movie theatre would lower there prices on concessions to a reasonable amount or have a seperate theatre with no outside influences trying to get me to buy it then I'd vote no again. Sadly I'm starting to feel like this more and more as the world and it's prices is just getting way out of wack.
Consider that while some things are dirt cheap still others that really should cost very little are somehow crazy expensive.
I can buy a DVD for $5.00 at wal-mart, own it and drink cheap coke and popcorn through the whole movie, or spend $40.00 to see it at the theatre.
To be fair you can buy a movie, popcorn, two liter of coke, and a microwave for about $60.00 and an family could watch it over and over.... or spend 40.00 for two people to go out and watch the movie.
definately, i think if the prices where reasonable and the popcorn wasn't stale. concessions would go through the roof! and people would see the movies as a much cheaper option, and there would be a rise in ticket salesAlthough the theaters should be able to do what they want since it's their theater.....
I don't agree with their price gouging ($4 for a soda??????) It's a bit ridiculous. Price your soda and candy reasonably and I'd buy moreRJay123
If they served better food at reasonable prices, I'd think they'd see more people actually eat there. Myself and pretty much everyone I know haven't bought any food or drinks from the theater in like 10 years.
