Censorship is never right.Quack_Attack
They say the dreaded "n" word several times in the book. That seems to be the main complaint.

Big deal, it's fiction.[QUOTE="Quack_Attack"]Censorship is never right.BoonMaster14

Is it derogatory? No, its merely an apt representation of what dialogue was like during that time period.

Big deal, it's fiction.I agree.
People are so sensitive these days. It seems individuals of European ancestory must constantly walk over egg shells for fear of offending an "oppressed" group of people.
It shouldnt be banned, but for some reason my school makes us read the book every year:?-OpaK-
Maybe if you passed your english class...

And to think I read To Kill A Mockinbird back in 8th grade. The "n" word in literature is no big deal at all for books written ages ago. You can't honestly try to hide something from High school students and think they're ignorant about it.Wow, if he has a case with the "n" word being used to reflect the times, I wonder what he thinks of rap.

Oh no! Not the n word! As much as I don't like the n word being used, at all, banning something that has the n word in it will not do a thing.[QUOTE="Quack_Attack"]Censorship is never right.BoonMaster14

Oh, in that case, I believe it should be banned. There is no room in today's literature for such racist trash. I cannot believe people would talk like that...what savages. We should only have books in our libraries that praise America, is devoid of those types of terms and says God Bless America at least every other page. Oh wait, if we say God, the Athiest will get upset too. Damn, I just cannot win. I have an idea...lets take a page from Fahrenheit 451 and ban books all together! They were a mistake in the first place. He gets shot in the back of the head...OH SHOOT, oops.nickyb628The way it happens is what's so terrible about it.

I was just being an ass and ruining the book. I should delete that, it was very sad when it happened though, I'll agree.
Woah. Ban a book from being read in HS English classes in schools all over the country? Can they do that?Squidward117
They almost banned Huckleberry Fin, cause it used the N word in it's litterature, because at that time that's what they were known as when the book was written. Ironically the statement seeing that people think it's a racist book, it tells a story of Fin helping a slave friend become free. =/
I think in the end, they re-published the book with revised words.
Only morons want to ban a book. Banning a book that was made in the past is very ignorant, you're banning decades of work and imagination. If it was a completely racist book that only dealt with segregation and down talked certain ethnicities, I can see that kind of book getting banned...Â
On a serious note though, of course it shouldn't be banned. High Schoolers are exposed to things that are a lot worse than that book, do they really think they're that innocent that they can't read Of Mice and Men? Pathetic.nickyb628Well, it's just....if the book was actually racist I could see what they mean. But it's abundantly clear that if anything the portrayal of an African American in the book is an arguement against slavery. This is evident just if you read the book by itselft but also if you realize that Steinbeck basically hated racists.
