They say the dreaded "n" word several times in the book. That seems to be the main complaint.

It's a good way to spark discussion about racism, and you can get a lot of insight on the issue discussing this in English class. I enjoyed it. We read it in eleventh grade. It was a good book, but I wish they taught more modern literature in high school.

Big deal, it's fiction.

so, it's still a great book - that was mark twain and stephen kings' favorite word I think

I agree with this guy.

I agree with this next guy.

I agree with these guys. I've read the book last year in my english class and there is nothing really bad in it. The book was pretty good.

They shouldn't go around banning books. Kids need to learn. I cringed when my teacher in high school would read passages aloud from Huckleberry Finn, but I still enjoyed the book and think it was worth reading.

If you don't want your kid reading a book, then take him out of the school, don't ruin it for everyone else.

This seems like an attempt on behalf of white folks to slowly erase the awful actions of their past. Like it not, the stuff in that book was normal at a time (the racial stuff, obviously... not the whole plot :P) and no amount of censorship is going to change the fact that slavery DID happen and that chronic racism DID happen.

I thought it didn't have much to do with slavery.  It's been a while but wasn't it about Lenny and George?  Lenny was the slightly retarded guy that followed George around?  It was more a social commentary than a lesson on slavery.

No way. I like that book. It's short, easy, and just a good book. I really don't see any reason that it should be banned.

I know it had nothing to do with slavery. It did have massive racism within it however. I was just citing it as an example of how high-class people seem to want to wipe away any existance of how times once were. If a book has a white person freely refering to a black person with the dreaded N word, lord knows it must be destroyed. That's what these people seem to want.
