Was watching my local news this morning, and there's legislation in the works to ban the sale of soft drinks in all Colorado public schools. Of course, it's being fought, as proponents are stating that each district should decide whether or not they want to do that. The idealogy behind this legislation is the welfare of the students, as it's believed that soft drinks is the number one contributing factor towards the obesity of children.

In a way, it's good idea, as I think it would help them in the long run, but again, I'm not one for these kinds of mandatory government bans. :|

Yes but shouldn't that be up to the soveriegnity of the school districts? Maybe not if they are under direct control of the govn't because their public. I'm in high school and they don't sell them in my district. Those "healthy options" or overpriced as hell though and taste like crap. Heh Soverignity I learned a new word and wanted to sound smart...

I never had it in my school, and it was never a problem. There's plenty of other stuff that doesn't create a massive sticky mess when spilled or thrown.

No, that is what the school is making a lot of profits on. I plus, it is better than having lunch with milk.

At my school people frequently bought gatorade and that vitamin water stuff, I wouldn't be concerned with profits.

They should be able to drink what they want because then you're just limiting their free rights. It's good in some ways and bad in others.

I think that too much responsibility gets placed on the school system. It should be up to parents to raise their kids and deal with the consequences of their actions. You cannot blame the schools for kids consuming too much sugar...I mean c'mon really?

Pfft. Nobody has a "right" to demand their school stocks and sells the beverage of their choice.

Want a soft drink? Bring your own. I don't think soft drinks are something schools should be spending additional money on, especially when you factor in the obesity rate in America, schools should be promoting better health habits.

Make the healthier foods cheaper for the high school kids, increase the cost of unhealthy foods.

Well if they do that they might as well just ban the soda. Most people will still buy the unhealthy food or just go somewhere cheaper like a fast food spot.

Nope. They shouldn't but it's the school's decision, still I think it would be a ridiculous and pointless ban.

They dont sell soda at my school but they do sell Powerade. I think they shouldn't because if kids want loads of sugar and rotten teeth, by all means let them have it.

As someone who drinks only water I can say that it isn't the government that can make people stop drinking soda but it's the people themselves. Let the people make that decision for themselves, not the government for all people.

I hate schools putting pepsi or coke machines in schools to make money off of them. But other than that, have you seen how much sugar are in those juice drinks? To me, any Juice is a waste...even 100% juice. Say you are drinking grape, orange or apple juice...pure 100% In 8oz of grape juice, there are 170 calories and 42 grams of sugar. THATS MORE THAN A POP! Apple Juice, the same, 120 cals and 29 grams of sugar in 8oz which is still more than a pop. I am wondering where their logic is? Juice is a waste, if you are going to go for that taste, have a diet coke and an apple, its healthier, you get all the nutrients you need and you are will fill your gut...so its a win, win win. Hey, I should prolly run for congress, I already won this argument with 30 seconds of internet research.

Actually, I don't think the schools are spending a penny on selling soft drinks. That's entirely on the vendor's behalf.

Soft drinks and other candy are a huge revenue maker for schools, this could put strain on schools that already dont have money for everything.

I never understood why people were willing to spend a WHOLE DOLLAR on 20 oz. of soda. I mean, it's even MORE now. :?

I rarely am willing to spend a dollar on 2-liters of soda. Though, 12 cans is worth 2 dollars, I'd say.
