There should be a "You are judged by your individual merits and not what you look like or who your ancestors were" day instead.

I think Black History month as first was meant to raise tolerence of blacks andawareness of the struggles that blacks faced in america to get where they are today. Equal for the most part.
We all know about the white race and their achievments, but this is one month given to blacks specificaly to give credit to the races achievments, let them have it lol. Whites have every other day of the year to boast.

the man was a freakin genius.
Our achievements were ignored and downplayed for hundreds of years. Once month out of a year isn't too much to ask is it?
Every single month is white guy history month. Hell, almost every holiday we have is a white guy holiday. Columbus Day, we're honoring a white explorer for an achievement he didn't really achieve, a fake achievement that he himself was oblivious to. Oh yeah, and he was a slave trader. We have Christmas, thought widely to be brought into Christian tradition by Martin Luther, at least in the sense we think of it in today. President's Day, a day celebrating two white Presidents. Thanksgiving, a tradition started by white settlers. Not to mention we have a history that, for the most part, is completely white due to our forcing African-Americans out of active participation, the history that African-Americans have is not widely taught in schools, and our mainstream culture is dictated for the most part by white culture. The reason we do not have a White History Month is not because we want to supress white culture, it's because we live white culture each and every day while African-Americans struggle to have their own unique history and culture accepted as part of that mainstream.

This topic is at least as old at OT itself and it should die right here. Post here anymore and you're doing the equivalentof poking a beached whale in the eye.
Most of the history they teach in schools is about white people. Kids are constantly learning about what white people did, whether it be Adolf Hitler or Alexander the Great.

alexander the great was middle eastern though born in northeast africa however though if im not mistaken well he sure as hell took over northeast africa hence the city alexandria in one of those northern african countries lol
lol i love ur icon. but yea there would really be no point. What would we celebrate?
Blacks use the term to celebrate the lengths their past generations went to for civil rights.
Most things white people did to celebrate, everyone of other races were included. There are even some white people that get credit for helping blacks during Black history month.

Alexander? I'm fairly certain he was Macedonian.First of all, I am NOT racist- I believe ALL races are equal...
just wondering what you think- should there be a white dude history month, or is that just being silly? There is a black history month (February), a women's history month (March), and a asian pacific heritage month (May) - should white guys get one as well? Hey, we've done some good stuff for the world :) Just wondering what yall think.

Alexander? I'm fairly certain he was Macedonian. He was, but he also built one of the biggest empires in history, in a single lifetime no less... The fact is most history is based on studying Western Culture as it is what basically took over the rest of the world, other areas of the world are sort of irrelevant for a modern western society, and western society is largely dominated by white people.
Although, if your class is halfway decent it will start in the Middle East in Mesopotamia, and most likely start with Sargon (I think that's the one) who basically started the first civilization. Also the Ottoman Empire should be another big topic, seeing as how they preserved most of the Roman knowledge for the Western world during the Middle Ages.
No, but they NEED to get rid of Black history month. If every race is equal, then they should not get a special month. The reply to this would be slavery. However, I see no Jewish history month, they were in slavery for 100s of years and then got sluaghtered, but no month for them. BHM needs to go.bronxxbombers
I agree, if every race is equal then we don't need a special month. We still need a special month. If African-Americans achieve total social parity within my lifetime I will be the first one to vote for geting rid of BHM. Until then, let's reminice about MLK.
As for the Jewish people, anthropologists dispute what level of slavery they lived in and for how long. Some speculate that there was no actual slavery, that they constituted a supressed working class, that there was a working class rebellion across the Egyptian Empire, and that whoever wrote the Bible exaggerated the story in order to tell a more vivid tale. Either way, though, the Egyptian Empire is long dead and cannot be held accountable for its actions. We can take responsibility by, at the very least, being educated about black history and taking the time to learn exactly how racism has affected them over the years. The Jewish persecution is well documented and we've even gone so far as to help create a sovereign Jewish state. If we were half as educated about the African-American struggle as we were about the Jewish struggle we might not need BHM at all.
