You can drink underage in your own house, I believe. It's up to the parents. It's just that other people can't drink at your house underage.

I've always thought it was pretty ridiculous that an 18 year old kid can go die in Iraq, but he can't walk into a bar and have a beer.

I think there's someone trying to fight to lower the age to 18 here in Colorado. He has a crazy theory that if the kids can obtain alcohol at a younger age, they'll be more responsible with it... :?

Well you can blame that on people who werent smart to understand that it is dangerous to get behind a wheel while trashed. Then end up killing someone....

It's pretty ridiculous for anyone who has the irresponsibility to drink then drive to exist..............besides drinking isn't a right or a necessary way of life. It's not like voting, and I find drinking pretty overrated. I do agree that having the age limit at 21 instead of 18 doesn't help anything as kids will always get their hands on alcohol in some way or not. I really think it comes down to upbringing and responsibility. Funny how I grew up with a father who drinks beer all the time (he never consumes it fast enough to get drunk) yet I can't stand the ****

You should be able to drink when you are 16. Case closed.

THere is MUCH more to it that just lowering the age, but lowering the drinking age is the most important step.

What we really need to do is change the way we view alcohol as a society and educate kids on its effects.

Here we see alcohol as some terrible thing, yet in Italy they see it as more of a neutral drink and treat it like other drinks. Untill recently Italy had not had issues with alcohol.

In Italy they also HEAVILY looked down on getting drunk, unlike here where it is almost encouraged. This is the thing that is starting to change in Italy and now they are having alcohol problems....

Not only that, but a lower drinking age makes it easier for colleges to monitor the drinking as it will get out in the open instead of the kids always hiding it from the officials. Also, a good cause of underage drunk driving is kids trying to drive themselves home to keep their parents from knowing what they did and getting in trouble....

I've read somewhere that the brain stops developing at ~24 , i think I've read it in wikii .

In my country alcohol is banned, and I'm glad it is, since it does more harm than good.

No, because you're still in your teen years. Your brain does not fully develop until the early twenties--if anything, the drinking limit should be raised to 25.

Actually, the brain is always developing in some sense or another. Better get rid of ANYTHING that might possible damage it. Like walls, the ground, spinny things, carcinogens, cars.

So-called white matter -- which sends signals from one part of the brain to
another -- continues to develop in the frontal and temporal lobes on average
until 48, the study found.

The researchers confirmed that so-called gray matter -- the cerebral cortex --
achieves peak development at the end of adolescence, then declines until old
age.

People don't like to think this, but responsibility does NOT neccessarily come with age. Most drunk drivers are males 25-35 years old.....

I don't have the link on me, but it was something we had in a presentation I just did in ****to lower the drinking age. One of my group members got that statistic from God knows where....

giving the group that are the worst drivers and the ones that report the most cases of drunk driving legal access to alchohol seems like stupidity. maybe in other countries the stats are different but in the US with US teens. it's not a wise move.

Now now, no need to throw out strawmen.

Drinking at a younger age is worse than at an older age. You surely cannot be disputing this. The younger someone is when they start drinking, the more likely they are to develop an addiction.

I don't think they should start before 18.

I got drunk a very few times before I was 18, and the other kids at these parties were utterly ridiculous.

I honestly think that at 18, choice should be in the adult. Or, don't consider them an "adult" until 21.

I am curious though how they split these "groups" up.

If they splt them into that small of chunks of years then there is still a good chance that we are BOTH right. I don't know enough of either stat to figure out if only you are right or if what I said earlier is still right as well.

Anyways,as I mentioned earlier, the lower drinking age should very well lower the drunk driving incidents in the 18-20 category anyways as they can feel free to call for rides.

Personally, me and my friends only drink when we don't have to go anywhere anyways, and we even keep someone sober for a late-night Mcdonalds run that is 5 minutes away....

They're an adult legally only. Biologically and mentally, they are still children. I'm 18, by the way.

Around 17-19.

Yeah but their position on alcohol is VERY long-standing as far as I have been able to find, so even then the policy is not to blame but rather a society shift going on.

If they are lucky it will be short-lived like our days here in the US where almost EVERYONE was into mind-altering drugs...

I seriously don't understand the whole demonizing alcohol idea as it is harmless when used RESPONSIBLY. I think all the demonization actually encourages bad behavior in regards to alcohol.....

Oh and Octain, read my original post as to why it there is reason to believe it would be a good thing in regards to drunk driving. If we didn't have such a lack of public transport at so many places here in the US my point would be null. But fact is I have lived in like 3-4 cities and there is almost a complete LACK of public transport....

The man with the mentality of a ten year old probably has a disorder.:|

You consider yourself more mature than most adults you know? I know you do. I do the same with myself. So does every other adolescent on Earth. One aspect of the mind is ego, where we consider ourselves somehow better than everyone else. Sadly, your own personal experiences (or in this case, opinions) are not reflective of the majority.

I find that wildly optimistic of you. if ppl in the 25-35 range that you mentioned aren't doing that enough why would I expect the younger ones to be that mature and level headed while drunk?

No offense but a lot of teenagers are reckless and irresponsible enough as it is being sober. allowing them to drink unrestricted would be a disaster.

I know that other countries don't have a age limit for drinking and haven't really seen any evidence that say this is a bad thing. No age limit means that children learn to be responsible social drinkers as they grow up instead of having to learn all at once when their 21 and going overboard.

Lol, what does a drinking age matter? People drink regardless of any laws; not that I do.

They consider themselves more mature because they have everything handed to them on a platter. Graduate from high school, move out on your own and support yourself, then you're mature. Until that enjoy the silver platter that comes with living at home and being taken care of by your "immature" parents.

*yawn*

Well, I've got one out of three so far. I never really called my parents immature. . . .but you need to. . . . .what's the phrase I'm thinking of? Grow up? Yeah, that sounds about right. Go with that.;)

I think its a good idea having the limit.. here in Australia the limit is 18.. i do think its a bit weird in places like America the limit is 21 when you can go to war at the age of 18.

18 seems like a good age.

I don't think that it should be repealed, but it should definitely be reduced to 18.
