Agreed, afterall you can be tried as a adult at the age of 18.. Meaning you should entail all the privalges and rights as a adult.

If you're responsible enough to choose the next commander and chief and smoke a bunch of cancer-causing cigarettes, I don't see why a beer is any different.Sajo7
Yes, there should be a weight limit instead. If you weigh less than 200 lbs, you are not allowed to drink. That way, only people who are already fat will be permitted to further ruin their lives, and everyone will be guarenteed not to get drunk off a few beersFood_NippleTerrible idea.
I would have to gain 50 pounds or so :?

Stupid... Seeing as being over 200lbs doesn't entail that your fat.
[QUOTE="Jandurin"]You can drink underage in your own house, I believe. It's up to the parents. It's just that other people can't drink at your house underage.xscrapzx
I don't even think that is possible.
yeah it is. if your parents give you permission it's legal.
Think the age limit should be lower than 21, if only to stop binge-drinking in college.quiglythegreat
Wouldn't that just introduce binge drinking to levels lower than college?
[QUOTE="LostProphetFLCL"]Biologically you have a point but the mentallity thing is complete BS.
I know someone who is almost 46 years old who has the maturity level of a freaking 10 year old....
I on the other hand and more mature and concerned about politics and other "adult" things than alot of adults I have come across...
Dracargen
The man with the mentality of a ten year old probably has a disorder.:|
You consider yourself more mature than most adults you know? I know you do. I do the same with myself. So does every other adolescent on Earth. One aspect of the mind is ego, where we consider ourselves somehow better than everyone else. Sadly, your own personal experiences (or in this case, opinions) are not reflective of the majority.
ok let me just mention that my stepdad actually claims ruffles as "his" own chips and threw a freakin fit when I had eaten a few and then clipped up the bag because it had been sitting open which means the chips were gonna go stale. Now mind you, I do mean only like 5 chips, which is nothing in a normal sized family bag....
As for my stepmom, while she pays attention to American Idol I surf the news and keep up with the election....
My point is that people mature at their own pace.
Sure I am not the majority, but there is no true majority. I feel that 18 is old enough where a certain level of maturity should be expected of people. We are mature enough to begin making life-changing decisions and I feel alcohol is NOT a serious decision. People make way too big of a deal out of alcohol which is a major problem here. It should be thought in the same way as other drinks. After all, do you see people binge-drinking pepsi? No....
[QUOTE="LostProphetFLCL"]Anyways,as I mentioned earlier, the lower drinking age should very well lower the drunk driving incidents in the 18-20 category anyways as they can feel free to call for rides.
Ontain
I find that wildly optimistic of you. if ppl in the 25-35 range that you mentioned aren't doing that enough why would I expect the younger ones to be that mature and level headed while drunk?
Well this is the thing, where do you think the majority of 18-20 year olds are drinking? college.
If people can be more open about the drinking then colleges can supervise these kids easier as they won't have to hide their drinking.
Collges could start programs of making people hand over their keys and what-not.
Not to mention as I said, I gaurantee you a good amount of kids that age drive with alcohol in them in fear of getting caught either by calling for a ride or even parties getting raided.
[QUOTE="muthsera666"] Not in America. Unless you are trying to get your parents arrested.JandurinYou sure?
I'm sure I read somewhere something.
Maybe my parents were just different. :P
Sorry, no.
LOL! dude the age is limit is 18, not 21. lol...GEARS_0f_war983
It used to be, but they changed it later because of drunk driving accidents in minors. In many European countries, drunk driving isn't a problem. If you are exposed to small doses of alcohol like a wine glass during dinner, I don't see how that will make you will start drinking heavily. I think if our society allowed very small exposure however when ever we think of drinking we think of getting drunk and that shouldn't be the case.
Teenagers need to learn their limits in a safe and controlled environment, like home. My parents did this, and I have never had the urge to binge-drink. If you have never been exposed to a substance untill a certain age, it is very easy to endanger yourself because you know nothing of your reaction to it, and might very well not be finding out in a controlled environment. It seems obvious to me that if the taboo is removed, then the situation will improve, it's no longer seen to be rebellious and therefore cool, but just an ordinary part of life to be enjoyed responsibly.
21 is ridiculous, by the way. I could vote, go to war, smoke and be entrusted with a car yet not be deemed mature enough to handle alcohol? It's mad. For those who want to know, it's legal to give children from the age of 5 alcohol in your own home, have a beer or cider with a meal from 14, and all restrictions are lifted at 18. There is a culture of binge-drinking, but upping the age limit would only excaserbate the problem.
Also, I know nobody stupid enough to drink and drive, it would be very much the minority, IMO, who would attempt such.
Originally, there was a reason for the 21 age limit. From what I was taught, take it or leave it, studies showed that the human liver was not fully developed until the age of twenty-one. Therefore, the legal age was set for when the average liver reached maturity.
I don't know if this is true or not, but that is what I was taught in high school.

But it's reinforcing the idea that getting drunk is acceptable behavior. Not exactly one of the best life lessons.
