should water be a human right or should it be privatized?

every human being on earth needs water to survive so it's important for humans to have water.

water is also a natural resource that has a market price and takes a company or organization to clean and distribute it.

this is a video of the Nestle CEO saying why he thinks it should be privatised:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTqvBhFVdvE&feature=player_detailpage#t=119s

so should it be common practice for big entities to own water or should it be distributed fairly?

companies is the reason why our water is polluted today... water is sorta privatised already... You gotta pay for it be transfer to where you want it and cleaned. Don't like well take a bucket out side down to the pond and clean it your self...

If these company want the business of water maybe they should head over to Africa. Plenty people over there need it

saying "its a right" is pretty useless since so many don't have the means to get drinkable water If the question is: is privatization a better way to give people the means to get water, the answer is: fvck to the no

Water is going to be a crucial resource in the future as I hear many countries rely on glacier melt to supply them with the water they do use. Maybe we shouldn't think of it as a right, but for world stability we should focus on international efforts to provide resources for water to countries that need it to stop the potential for conflicts based on water resources. Anyhow, I heard the US Airforce had research and development into "artifical leaves", which can provide both a low source of power and aid in providing clean water, which could help in countries where people have less means of accessing both. In a sense of defense spending, it might be worth investing in aiding other nations for security purposes. There's also news that uses of graphene can cut down on energy required to desalinate water. There's hope that solutions to providing water to those that need it might not be such an issue in the future.

Just wondering whats wrong with non-aggression, why a number individuals should have a complete monopoly of violence over workplaces and geographical locations, why you can't let people manage their own lives, why people can't have freedom of speech on what is called private property.

Everyone pays for water as it is.  If you want to build a house somewhere outside the city then you have to pay thousands upon thousands of dollars to have city water installed.  You have monthly bills paying for the water you used over the last few months.  And I don't think legal ownership of all the water is possible.  Considering monopolies can't exist without government help, in a free market we would see multiple companies offering different services, providing customers with different ways to obtain the water.

I'd say water CAN be owned if it is in a designated area and has a specified amount.  I could say "I own this bottle and the water inside" like a company could say "We own the water flowing in the pipes by the street and if you want access to it you can pay us."

Private services aren't a crazy or insane thing.  In my area a private company (with permission from governments in the area to have a monopoly) goes to every house in the city picking up trash.  It is possible that a company could also own the water in the city until you purchase it by using it.  It stays theirs until you turn the faucet on and use it, then it is yours and you can do whatever you want with it.

please tell me the only two options are not government owned or corporation owned, cant their be a single option where the ownership is held by people who have a vested interest in the future, like individuals and not groups. i dislike how every political issue is about removing rights from the population. like if a river goes through your property and some one upstream pollutes it you can sue them for property damages, the two options seem to be to sell off all rights to the government and allow them with their track record to screw over everyone or to a pretend person who is crazy, because this person has no body and its mind is created by many many people, none of whom are personally liable for the actions of the pretend person. cant there be liability? please?

The government has a monopoly on water. That is not good. I don't want to pay for water I don't drink. Private individuals should claim ownership of water. The government is illegitimate. It has no conception of rights. Individuals should build their own plumbing systems but the government won't let them because it is an authoritarian and statist organization. Individuals would create more competition in the water industry but the government won't let them. I don't like paying for other people's water. That money is mine. The government has no right to my money. I will still drink tap water because it is mine. Poor people should not be allowed to drink tap water because they are poor and don't contribute. I am tired of poor people drinking my water that they received by money stolen from me by the government.

No. I believe there are certain products and services that should be State-provided at a cost imbued into taxes, there just to cover the expenses of maintenance and expansion costs. Water, food, lodging, education and healthcare should be available to all at standard levels of quality; if someone feels the need to offer a private alternative, be my guest, but they should still be available to the public, regardless of their origin.

seems like you just want everyone to fund farming but the farms. free water, food and all....... i would love to live in your system, i would never have to work as a farmer and it would be kewl

how greedy can people get?

What if people did charge to breath though?

Side note; a businessman next to Dallas is currently stocking up with billions of gallons of water and is planning to gouge the sh1t out of the city if(when) there's a water shortage.

hope the government steps in.

Water should be controlled by the government, but it shouldn't be a "right".

Water should be free only if you earn it.

Tap water should not be privatized. It should be treated as a public resource and managed that way. Of course you should pay for it regardless. Now bottled water should of course be privatized. I drink both. I usually prefer the taste of bottled water though. It's so cheap anyway.

sukraj

Of course we should. It costs money to keep, clean and distribute water. It's so easy to open the tap and get fresh clean water but it costs money. Not only that, a developed country usually makes water available to everyone, regardless where they live. So people in more desert areas still get water because it is distributed there. You may also have years where it barely rains but you still have water because it was stored from previous winters. All this stuff costs money. It shouldn't be managed as a normal company (i.e. having to turn a profit) but of course it should be paid. Don't want pay it, go live in a mountain and get the water yourself.

Water is essential for survival of life on Earth. Think about it.
