I just watched the movie and i only give it a 5/10, the first hour was good but it fell apart after that, just wondering what others thought of it.

Great stuff. Atmosphere is effective. Acting is great. The last line solidified what I previous thought as a really good film to a great film. 8/10

Yeah that last line was awesome!
I also thought the scene at the lake was expertly executed
Also, the dream sequences were incredible. The highlights of the film for me were those sequences and that scene at the lake.

Have only seen half of it and I thought its atmosphere is top notch from a great director, I know what the twist will be, but I don't care, it doesn't seem like a film that lives or die on that. I should probably finish it. :P

I loved it. I saw it twice in theaters and plan to buy it soon. Everything about it just worked for me. The acting was great, I adored the dream sequences, the atmosphere was fantastic, etc. It was stunning to look at, but I also liked the plot. There's a lot to it, and I wish that people wouldn't emphasize the 'twist' so much because that sort of cheapens the whole experience. I think I gave it a 9/10.

A solid thriller... great atmosphere and top notch acting. Also I saw it at the cinema, I think that added to the overall tension of the film. 8/10.

One of Scorsese's weakest films in a few years. Almost entirely lacking in subtly, particularly from an aesthetic perspective, with the music and photography. I found it to be convoluted, preposterous and predictable! I am in the minority on this but I also thought DiCaprio was over the top. Disappointing considering how long I waited for that movie! I'm old now!!

I'd give it 7/10. I guessed the ending like halfway through the movie. I thought the last line in the movie was really good.

I fully agree with your scoring, the movie was much to heavy handed and clear as day had a twist coming. I literally called it about half way through the movie. The last line of the movie was good, but what that line presented was not explored rather exploring what he thought he saw.

..

Throw in some completely ridiculous and out of place scenes. Look hes blowing up a car, why the **** would he do that? They werent looking anywhere near him at that point in time. Ohh look my friend is lying at the bottom of a cliff, then a lady appears, then lets discuss politics. Did he just stop caring about his friend? What about the speech with the Warden and with the cell mate, both so clearly out of place that they screamed "will be explained when you see the ending!"

..

Such a shame given the pedigree involved..

I enjoyed the movie a lot, definitely an 8/10 in my mind. I will admit that the book is better, but that is my opinion of course. It is surprising how closly Scorsese followed the book

These sorts of comments are what irritate me the most about Shutter Island. I just wish that people wouldn't put such an emphasis on the 'twist.' Even if you guessed the 'twist' before it was explained, you could still enjoy it. Guessing the 'twist' doesn't invalidate the rest of the film. It's a great psychological thriller. It's very true to the book, so if you want to complain, complain about the source material.

Agreed. It's Martin Scorsese, not M. Night Shyamalan.

Well lets look at my reply then shall we. A lot of movie felt like it was based on the twist, conversations, actions, characters, would not make full sense unless "something" explained them later. Stuff literally felt out of place. I wasnt as much guessing as much as having things stuffed down my throat. I have never read the book, if the movie is true to the source material then my complaints would go to the book as well.

I plan on buying this movie, but I do have one thing to say based on the discussion so far. Judging from Scorsese's films, I don't think he intended for his film's quality to based around the twist. The barrier that lies between a good and great film lies on many qualities and great movies should not just rely on a single element to make it great. To call a movie bad just because the twist was predictable is like saying A Clockwork Orange is not as shocking as it used to, so it's not a good movie.

this was a great movie. Acting, scenes, dialogue, atmosphere. It was an awesome movie and I don't particularly care for DiCaprio however this and inception make me want to watch his acting.

I thought the same when I first saw it, but upon a repeated viewing, I came to a new conclusion. This movie is a masterpiece.

SPOILERS AHEAD (sorry, can't do spoiler tags for some reason):

Like I said, during my first viewing I was able to see the twist coming miles ahead, from around the 1 hour mark, and it didn't seem like a good tiwst at all. To me, it almost seemed cliche to go with the "he was crazy all along thing". Its almost as bad as the "it was all a dream" cliche.

However, I now realize that this twist wasn't a twist at all. It was a fake twist that Scorsese put there to confuse us, just like the doctors at Shutter Island were trying to confuse Teddy.

It was real, and Shutter Island was a real evil place where they did all those experiments. The last line is proof that Teddy was not crazy.

You sure about that? I thought the dream sequences made it clear that he was a schizophrenic trying to forget what happened at the lake.

By the way...I like how a whole bunch of people talka bout the "twist" as if it had any true bearing on the film. There's no true and definite answer to what really happened during the story and the people that think toherwise did not examine it well.

That is not much of a review TC. I however really enjoyed the movie and did not I did expect the twist. The musical score was excellent and I thought Leo did a terrific job. 8.5 out of 10.
