Do you think sleep is necessary? We "waste" sooo many hours sleeping every day.

Atleast 6 hours a day, (6x7) 42 hours a week,(30x6) 180 hours a month and (365 x 6) 2190 hours a year!

(2190/24= 91.25 days) So we waste roughly 91.25 days a year just by sleeping.

(365/91.25=4) 1/4 of our lives are being wasted sleeping! Do we REALLY need sleep, or are there vitamins we can take to gain whatever we get when we sleep?

Try not sleeping for a week and see how far you get.

I usually hate sleeping but once I am sleeping it becomes impossible to wake me up. It always requires to wake ups for me to finally get out of bed.

some scientists actually have huge protein diets and they sleep in regular intervals for a total of 4 hours of sleep a day, that way they can get more research done. But yes sleep is necessary. It helps the brain and body recharge, and to help sort the information we took in during the day. Without sleep we would die.

Regardless you need it. Your body needs to recharge. If there were vitamins I am pretty sure there would be people already using it.

actually if you aren't being physically stimulated intensely, your body will actually force you into a coma until it has been sufficiently rested. It's very very difficult to die from "lack of sleep." Your body has defenses against that. However it could be remotely possible.

Your mind needs sleep for rest and repair (also body cells).

The body produces a certain chemical (can't remember the name) only when you're in darkness, which usually denotes sleep.

A good night's sleep is restorative on several levels.

It's necessary and benefitial to everyone. You'll be able to concentrate better as you get good sleep. Myself, I tend to favor the style of a stand up coffin with my arms folded over my chest in the shape of an X.

Actually, humans don't die without sleep, unlike rats. You will however, go insane.

Call me crazy, but I like to sleep. If you really want to stay awake all the time, become a dolphin. They sleep half a brain at a time.

There is fatal familial insomnia, but I'm not sure if the death in that case is caused by the lack of sleep or from other effects of the disease.

It's physically necessary, but I hate it. I hate sleeping. I think I'm mostly just bitter because I've had sleeping problems for most of my life, but ugh. I feel like it's such a waste. It always takes me forever to fall asleep, so I get really angry sometimes.

I enjoy sleeping.

Seeing it as a waste of time, well that would make as much sense to me as to regard other vital functions in daily life as a waste of time too.

Food. What a silly waste of time, i mean, you have to prepare it, and chew it when you could be talking instead. And then there are the dishes. I feel robbed.

And drinking.Total waste of time. You cant even say anything at all while you drink, and you have to spend money and time buying the stuff, and time IS money, money you had to work hard for in order to earn. Even just turning the tab to fill up a bottle, when you could be playing videogames or watching House.

And walking. What a royal waste of time that is? Where is my damn segway, they should invent a pill that restores your cardio vascular system, the strength of your bones and rebuild lost muscle tissue, while feeding your skin with D-vitamins. Cos walking is yet another theif of time, time you could be spending doing stuff you really like to do, like playing video games or watching House.

You probably get my point by now.

Humans are incapable of "wasting" time, since everything we do serves a purpose, however unconstructive that purpose might seem to be, or actually be.

The lack of sufficient sleep is linked to:

- irritability and a lower tolerance for aches and pains
- impaired cognitive ability
- impaired memory recall
- impaired judgment
- impaired attention span
- impaired immune system
- impaired reaction time
- impaired ability to be happy
- increased risk of heart disease
- increased risk of type 2 diabetes
- increased risk of obesity
- growth suppression
- hallucinations (in extreme cases)

Psychiatric studies have shown that those who live the longest report getting six to seven hours of sleep each night, and reports have stated again and again that one ought to attempt to get at least six hours of sleep every night. Anything less than that is done at one's own risk of consequences to both one's health and one's general contentment in life.

So yeah, sleeping is generally a good idea. :P

There was an article about a farmer who hadn't slept in like 10 years, something happened and now he never gets tired, he works a farm through the night and he doesn't die of exhaustion, so it's definitely possible though not for "normal" people, perhaps we could evolve to all be like the farmer at some point.

Lol, I don't believe that. if you brain doesn't have two cycles of REM sleep each 24 hours for several days, you go slightly coocoo... Now, if that'd happen for TEN YEARS, you'd die..
