Smart people(brilliant in academics, huge SAT and near perfect GPA) cannot be of any use in the following events:

1) Getting mugged/attacked on the street. Will probably puss out and run. Or cry. (no street smarts)

2) Forced in a situation where some amount of bravery is required. For example, saving someones life.

3) Very Socially awkward MOST of the time. If they are really that smart, dealing with people should be childs play.

Conclusion: Smartpeople mayhave the ability to obtain knowledge from books and the internet with ease, but cannot function if thrown out of their confort zone.

What say?

I say that it sounds like you've been watching too many movies. Or not enough. The stereotype that smart people are like the dudes from Revenge of the Nerds is honestly one of the more silly stereotypes that has somehow still continued to exist.

stupid people are stupid....period.

they may have street smarts and the ability to fight. but their overall lack of intelligence of any sort makes the at best non contributing mouth breathers. a cancer to our society and should all be killed off immediatly as they are only dragging down the human race.

broad generalizations for the win.

Have you heard of the multiple intelligence theory? People can be smart in different ways. The one you named, is Logical-Mathematical intelligence. Other "intelligences" include: Musical, Linguistic, Spacial, Body-kinesthetic, Interpersonal (being able to help others, and Intrapersona(knowing how to deal with your own emotions, what your goals are).

Don't be so jealous of other people. Live your life and have fun, do what you want to do. I know plenty of people that are "smart", but they just don't have any fun. They're too tied up in their school work all the time and life just flashes by. What I'm trying to say is that some people need to stop for a minute, chill out, and enjoy life, don't JUST do work work work, that's not the only thing their is to life. One person I know in particular, all this person knows is books, she knows nothing of the outside world, never watches tv or goes to the movies and is just always studying. I guess it's part of the person's culture but still, people need to enjoy life, unless I guess they already are enjoying it by studying all the time. Seriously though, don't be worried if anyone is "smarter" than you. You know how you can be "smart"? Just read what you're told to in school, it's honestly that simple.

I don't think so. Most of what I have noticed in extremely smart, 'nerdy' people supports my theory. I don't have accurate statistics as that would be absurd. It's a rough estimation, and is to a certain extent true. Open your eyes.

There is something called Social Intelligence.
Than theres book smarts and street smarts.

I don't beleive in book smarts. Grades, etc.
That doesn't prove your smart. It simply proves
you can memorize stuff and pass tests.
Congratulations. So can mentally challenged children.

Street smarts is gained thru experience.

Social intelligence, some ppl are born with it, some not.
People who socialize well are socially intelligent.
You can become more socially intelligent with experience and study.

Granted, there are a few intellectuals who are masters of their discipline, but cannot figure out how to boil an egg or maintain a meaningful human relationship.

The vast majority are far more well-rounded. Perhaps more than you are capable of comprehending.

being one of the smart people in high school, id have to say that is pretty much wrong. out of the 50 or 60 people that would qualify as 'overachievers' i think i am the only one who is really nerdy. a lot of them play sports or are in marching band (which i hear is pretty physically demanding), and those that arent are still really outgoing.

Based on your post, I can assume you are not smart. Therefore, you should not be consulted on matters concerning intellectual/hypothetical reason, such as the qualities and behaviors of people as determined by their intellect, so this post is both incorrect and useless.

Don't worry though, because if I'm ever being mugged I'll give you a ring, and you can come beat the guy up for me!

See, that's the beauty of being smart: when you get a job, you earn enough money that you can live somewhere where you don't have to deal with getting mugged on the street. I don't think that "I fended off a mugger" is exactly something to write home about.

You mean to say they are idiot savants. Trivia smart? Also Known as Nerds, jerks, geeks and dweebs. As in their brains are only good for reading and answering questions that revolve around the books they have read? "HUH! I know that, because I read it! WOW!"

The world has people that are book smart as well as perceptive. If we didn't we wouldn't have the technology we have. We wouldn't have Rangers, recon, recon snipers and various other special forces, because the mind is the most powerful weapon, without it they wouldn't succeed.

Your topic title is the negation of a tautology, which means it obviously can't be true. By the way, running is the smart thing to do if you are getting attacked, particularly by more than one person, if you have the chance, but I guess your definition of smart is "less likely to make decisions which are conducive towards self-preservation or in one's best interest." I guess one man's "smart" is another man's "foolish." And what the hell does saving someone's life even have to do with intelligence? How does risking your life for someone else's make you "smart"? That doesn't even make sense. Now get out there and lift some weights.

The thing I dont like about this theory is that you claim anyone can pass all their tests if the drop their lives and study. Now I for one consider myself failr intelligent but barely study at all, meanwhile many students who try as hard as they can struggle to get marks close to mine. I consider myself lucky but the fact is, you couldnt be smart if you tried.

Not to mention that failing tests doesnt automagically give you the ability to fight off muggers and run around taking bullets for people.

Stupid people are likely to:

  • Get over excited at the most mundane of changes.
  • Get your 4 year old daughter wedged into the grill of their car.
  • Constantly pull off sickies for work.
  • Get into an unnecessary fight.
  • Express their feeble minds forcefully with profanities.
  • Get a crap tattoo because they couldn't afford a decent one with their JSA.
  • Smell of cabbages.

What an insanely ridiculous thread. I feel like I stepped onto a playground!

PS: I watched Revenge of the Nerds again a couple of days ago. What a great movie. Bit dated now ... but still awesome. I wish I could program animations like that with a few keyboard presses on a pre-BBC micro computer!

PSS: Im probably what you would class as a "smart person". But tell you what ... I didnt achieve what I have by reading my textbooks and memorising facts. I took a lot of my exams without paying any attention in class or doing revision. Its called being able to understand the physical world around you and theoretical concepts. Bravery and physical prowess has nothing to do with it. And "street smarts" is one of the most ridiculous concept Ive ever heard. Most "street smart" skills revolve around having to deal with "stupid people" and their inability to control their primal instincts to want to hurt, steal and destroy. Hows that for more ridiculous generalisations? :) (Feed the fire! This thread is amusing)

What say?

dhruv989

1) So a street smart person would take on a mugger? The smart thing would be to run away or just give them what they want. Suicidal nobility =/= street smarts.

2) So smart people, for example DOCTORS, don't save lives?
