I guess it would be alright to ban it in public areas like sidewalks and community parks, but when it comes to buisenesses that should be their choice.
Yes, its about damn time. People aren't allowed to drink in public, so why are they allowed to smoke? However, I believe that everyone has a right to smoke on privately owned property, or where the property owner allows it. Because banning it outright isn't the answer. Just in public places where people shouldn't be subjected to someone else's smoke. If weed were legal and people were allowed to smoke in public... I wonder how many other people might become outraged at the idea? foxhound_fox

It's against the law in the majority of public places in the US......What are the reason for these bans? For peoples health? How many people are there really smoking outside? Well I must say no, but I can somewhat understand if you are for this and live in a fairly congested area. There are people inhaling entire packs of cigarette a day consecutivly for years. don't believe that second hand smoke from a passer byer will have any ill effects on ones health. If you're going to say it smells bad i say you are going to run into multiple things that smell bad in public besides cigarettes. There are many other things that effect our health that need more concern, but get none

In Calif, possession of an open can /bottle of alcohol beverage is prohibited.
No, sometimes you just have to live with things you dont like because other people disagree with youWollsThey same thing could be said for smokers because non-smokers don't like it
I can understand the debate over banning sale or marketing of tobacco or whatever, but as long as it's legal to smoke, I don't see why it should be banned in open areas where people are moving around. Indoor bans in public places and outdoors where people are forced to stand in close proximity, like at bus stops, I can understand.
On a kind of related note, I don't really understand why drinking outdoors, in view of the public is illegal in the USA.
*edit* Looks like someone beat me to that one.

I can honestly say that I have never heard of punlic drinking being banned. Maybe its because I live in Arizona, though.
Lol drinking in public is banned? where do you live?Tokugawa77Winnipeg, Canada. Where "public intoxication" is also against the law. Drinking in your backyard isn't "public." Drinking on the sidewalk downtown most certainly is. And it is mostly a discretionary thing... most cops won't get involved unless one is causing trouble, or when the ticket quota needs to be met. Ironically, this was exercised recently when the NHL was announced that it was coming back to Winnipeg, and tons of people were chugging beer from replica Stanley Cups in the middle of the street on one of the busiest downtown avenues.
heh, you gotta love a forum where everyone supports the rights of every minority and sub-section of the population to do almost any damn thing they want up until they are smokers.
there is the 21st century line in the sand.
**** those peices of ****.
i guess there is only so much blood in those bleeding hearts.
i guess it works i quit years ago.
No, I don't smoke myself but when they smoke outside then it's not within a confined area and thus essentially forcing others to breathe it in. If you do manage to breathe it in then you've been standing too close to them.Treflis
No, they're standing too close to me. I should be able to stand in my own yard without being forced to smell their s***.
[QUOTE="Ilovegames1992"]
And btw if cigarettes should be banned, so should alcohol.

Drinking alcohol is already banned in public.
That is the most rediculous ban that I have ever heard of. Someone could just get drunk in their home then go to a public place...
I don't see a reason why smoking in public should be banned?
- The passive smoking is used as a argument everywhere these days, while passive smoking only poses health problems if the passive smoking persists for years and is experienced at least a few times a week. In addition most studies are about closed space passive smoking, not about open air.
- If bad smells are the reason for probition then society has a problem considering sweat, certain types of good and certain deoderants smell horribly aswell.
- One may claim that smoking should be banned in public because it's a bad image for children. There is no conclusive research done on this but there are quite a bit of doubts wether is going to make a difference.

It's against the law in the majority of public places in the US......Public intoxication (which itself is vague and can be open to interpretation) is, but I don't know of any place where drinking in public itself is banned. Hell that would make every bar and most restaraunts lawbreakers.
On topic: I love the hyperbole employed by the anti-smoking brigade. The "walking around covered in radiation" bit was especially amusing.
Second hand smoke is harmless
I don't support smoking. Don't do it, nor recommend it. But I'm not letting politics stop me from thinking logically using accurate science. If I believed second hand smoked caused cancer, then I'd also have to believe weed is a "gateway" to crack  in other words, believe every non-sense a politian says.
If second hand smoke does affect those who breathe it in, then I would support a ban in public places.Lonelynight
Tbf you'd also have to support banning alcohol.

Passive smoking = second hand smoking :)
Furtheremore gasses from older cars are pretty damn unhealty aswell as are tons of other things, it's pretty much impossible to use second hand smoking as a reason to prohibit it.
i don't mind the smell. i have a cig every once in awhile, i guess that's why. but even when i had completely quit smoking i didn't mind the smell. if my friends went out for a smoke, i'd go hang outside and talk with them while they smoked.

Second hand smoke causes cancer in the same manner that Cell phones give you brain tumors.
I read studies that second hand smoke is about as dangerous as smoking it yourself. That's a bit different than the cell phone problem. Unless the amount of cell phone users getting brain tumors has increased a lot.[QUOTE="Blue-Sky"][QUOTE="Lonelynight"]If second hand smoke does affect those who breathe it in, then I would support a ban in public places.BranKetra

I've read studies that are inconclusive. Studies say a lot of different things.
I say keep all the non smokers locked inside cages so that I can smoke in peace without getting glared at.
Or like, you know.
Anyway the smoking laws in my town are pretty strict...no smoking near doorways, no smoking at the beach, no smoking in parks..
$2000 fine or something?

It reminds me of South Park quite a lot. They were dead on as usual.
Non-smokers should be banned. Seriously, you people are ****ing annoying. I rarely smoke, but when I do it seems like everyone needs to inform me that it's unhealthy.

Yes. You shouldn't be allowed to smoke around other people. One of the few things I like about New York.

I read studies that second hand smoke is about as dangerous as smoking it yourself.Yes, second hand smoke causes may health problems.
According to National Cancer Institute:
- At least 69 of the toxic chemicals in the second hand tobacco smoke cause cancer.
- Inhaling second smoke causes lung cancer in non-smoking adults
- The U.S. Surgeon General estimates that living with a smoker increases a nonsmoker's chances of developing lung cancer by 20 to 30 percent.

That is actually a pretty smal increase if you think about it. Say that a non-smoker's chances of getting lung cancer is 1%. If they live with a smoker, that chance would be 1.2-1.3%. But is any case, it all comes down to personal freedoms. just because cigar smoke irritates some people does not give them the right to prevent people from smoking. I see guys with skinny jeans and tattoes all over their bodies and that irritates me, but does that give me the right to tell them that they can't go out in public?

Yes we are very well aware that cigarret smoke is not healthy. But there is still no reported victim of cancer due to second hand smoke. It's not healthy, but there simply isn't enough exposure to from 2nd hand smoke to seriously harm you.
