Do you drink. Maybe they should put those warnings on your alcohol with pictures of diseased livers.

But that's different! Drinking is actually COOL!

I am too young to drive, and I have ridden in a bus once.

SeanyBoy21

still, you get my point. You DO have the right to cause long term harm.

What is your definition of a "right"?

I dunno, what's yours?

If you don't know, than why are you arguing about what rights we have?

right=a moral, ethical, or legal principle considered as an underlying cause of truth, justice, morality, or ethics.

Legally we have the right to do long term harm to others for personal pleasure and that is the subject of this topic. TC (and myslef) believes that that should be changed because Morally and Ethically, we don't believe that we have the right to do that.

I don't bother with legality. I bother with reality. In reality, it doesn't do much damage to others unless you live with them, so get over yourself. If you want to make a difference, get cars abolished. /hah

AMEN! This is my biggest pet peeve- so much so that for a while a carried plastic bags in a park while I walked to hand out to offenders. And as for the smoking, let's not let the governments control us any more than they already do.

Wow really have some pompus people in hear.

Persoanlly i think smoking should be banned indoors in all public areas oh somthing like the UK has. Then Smokers go outside and thesmoke only effects them and other smokers in a small radius at a designated smoking area.

Oh look everyone is happy and smokers can still enjoy smoking.

Well the sooner some of the child minded i am right you are wrong posters here realize the best way to deal with many situations is to become flexible when dealing with the opposition, the better for my sanity and temper!

Ahh you should learn how to compromise thats the word i was looking for. Now unless you non smoking guys wanna come up with a reason why smoking outside should be banned? Lets just hope America adopts the UKs stance on smoking because its a winner for all involved.

Tobacco, alchohol and firearms need to just be left alone. I thought we learned something from the prohibition but I guess history does like to repeat itself.

agree 100%

Too many people make a ruckus simply because they feel entitled to it. I call that the College Student Living Off Campus For The First Time Syndrome. Something irks you, and its a legitimate complaint on the technical level, yet your demands to fix it are just so out of proportion to the actual problem that you come off looking like a tool.

Live in reality, be a good person, and compromise. Things are pretty good now; you cant smoke inside, you can post a sign saying "no smoking" just about anywhere, and lets be frank...smoking is generally so frowned down upon that smokers are careful with where they light up as to bother the least amount of people. I know I am and everyone I smoke with is.

[QUOTE="AngelsFan32"]

I just saw this show and on it they said that if somebody smokes somewhere and then they leave, most of the harmful chemicals are still there and can still harm people who are there even days after. So if you go into a hotel room where somebody smoked, you breath in all of those chemicals and if your parents smoke, you breath them in all the time cause you can get the chemicals off their clothes, or if they smoke in the house, you basically breath them in all the time. These aren't joke chemicals either, they're the ones that really screw you up. Why are ciggarettes not illegal, yet others things that shouldn't be are?

teddyrob

They should be put in jail. You know if you had those samechemicals in bottles at your home. The police would put you in jail.

I'm in favour of a total ban everywhere including your own homes. Make it illegal. It's the only way to clean healthy lungs for everyone.

Well then lets ban:

Cars, for creating smog. Its (the other) only way to clean your lungs
Fast food, for clogging arteries. Its the only way to clean your arteries
TVs, for damaging your eyesight. Its the only way to preserve your vision
...lets see what else

I would rather live in a fun, free society for 90 years than a dull, bland, sissy society for 95

The oxygen within our environment is potentially harmful overall. With automotive emissions, rubbish, and other pollutants tainting our earth; we're always at a risk. Sitting out in the sun too long can potentially lead to skin cancer. I'm a former smoker myself. I quit over a month ago now, and am happy with my decision. I figured I wasn't getting any younger and being a stubborn smoker wasn't productive, or economically viable for the life I live and the life I intend to continuously live. With that already being said, let's get down to arguing over your point. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tobacco I want you to glance over that there so you can get a sense of the history and actual uses of tobacco. Tobacco itself has a rich history, especially lending a great hand in the American economy, as well as the economies of other industrialized nations. The plant itself gave way to the development of the southern economy. Its social impact is as follows: It has had a hand in advertising, movies, television, and other forms of popular media. However, in terms of economics: Tobacco has a hand in manufacturing, farming, production, distribution, and trade. As well as there are specific businesses that sell, distribute, and produce tobacco related products. Eliminating smoking would potentially harm the economy. Not just in America, but globally. If there is a ban on cigarettes, eventually it would lead to a ban on all tobacco related products. Shutting down the businesses cuts off trade with other countries. It puts farmers out of jobs; and farming is nearly a futile enterprise as it is. You destroy an integral part of the American economy and it affects the country as a whole, as well as the economies of other industrialized nations, on so many different levels. I could go on and on and more than likely I'd have to write and present a thesis on the subject, but I'll spare you and everyone else, as well as myself. Think about the bigger picture. I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Smoking should be limited to islands about 25 miles off the coast and the penalty for smoking on the mainland is death. I hate breathing other people's smoke, it's disgusting.

If you don't want to be around smokers, why don't you buy yourself an island and ban smoking there? Why should we lose the freedom to smoke just because some people are afraid of it? Do you also oppose the use of cars and airplanes? You do know those also create pollution with "dangerous" chemicals, right?
