I kind of learned how to tie one yesterday, but seriously whats the point of ties?

I mean does it somehow make me more important, more professional?

their purpose is to get caught in a paper shredder and strangle you. that or to get dirtied while you eat.

but seriously, i guess someone didn't like looking at buttons, so they invented a piece of cloth to cover them

It's formal. Usually you wear it if you're going someplace nice, or if it's mandatory for work. You wouldn't wear sweat pants and a muscle shirt to a wedding would you?

There's nothing inherently professional about ties. They do, however, have that meaning symbolically. That's all that matters.
