I realize asking this in a gaming forum is a bit dangerous, but what will gamers do if desktops do go the way of the Dodo? Do you believe desktops will truly disappear? Or will some company keep them around and they will become a niche in the overall market of computers?

Personally I think that as long as people are making games that are supported by the OS's on desktops they won't die out completely, but if you want a desktop you will end up having to buy it yourself.

I don't think so. The more people I meet the more people have laptops, but I also still meet a surprisingly large number of people at home with a desktop.

Unless Laptops become a lot easier at upgrading and changing hardware, I'd say desktops have a got a lot of life left in them. Though I won't deny Laptops have steadily become more popular. Didn't they outsell desktops this year or last year?

Why would you think desktops are dying. I don't know anyone who owns a laptop but everyone owns a desktop. Personal experience may vary of course :P I hate using a laptop. Regardless you can always build one yourself if it ever came to the scenario you are describing

I'm still a big fan of them b/c laptops make me have to buy a keyboard and mouse both of which I have but I still rather have a desk top most of the time.

What the hell are you talking about? If anything I hope Laptops will die. I mean as a male human, I don't think I'll ever put them on my lap for one. No, I don't actually believe they cause enough radiation to render me sterile, but they still get asterisking hot, so no way joseph. Laptops are impractical. They don't have enough hours without the battery pack, and their screen is too small compared to a normal PC screen that's hooked up to a desktop. And if you're talking about the now even SMALLER technology, again no way. I'm over 15 so their novelty is lost on me.

Nope. People who actually have to seriously use computers will always use a desktop. Especially now that more and more people are incorporatingcomputers into their home entertainment by hooking them up to their TVs.

I think you're find more people with desktops for home use (as they are more functional and comfortable to use in every way) and cheap Netbooks for road use.

Do i think desktops are dying , no . I thinks its that laptops are just becoming more affordable and for the most part people who only need to use word , or hop on the internet will pickup a cheap laptop over a cheap desktop because it's more practical .

Dear lord, I hope not. If my last laptop was any indication I would have to buy a new one every two years (and it would only work half of that time, as well). I like haveing computers that can last 6 or more years, thank you very much.

Yes for the most part. They will disappear from the regular developed world within 20 years as laptops are becomiing more and more powerful but consumer software complexity isn't scaling with it also there's the trend in cloud computing. Proffesional work stations will still exist in desktop format and some enthusiasts will still use them (NB: i don't mean gamer when i use that term), the desktop form factor may return to the home in the from of home servers.

Not whilst offering good battery life, portability and good value, it will atleast be half a decade until even one of those is solved properly. I can't see the problems being solved completely unless we get inductive Tesla power networks or mass production of carbon nanotube batteries.

I think we'll start seeing TVs with computers built in. As more people have their computers hooked up to their HDTVs, and now TVs coming with internet now, it's only natural to be the next step. TV with windows.

If the majority do flock and desktops arent mainstream anymore, I wouldnt care. I have been using a laptop for years, about 3 now and sometimes I just like to go on a desktop and use it. They are usually more powerful and get things done quicker than on a laptop. Also, laptops cost more, though they are coming down in price. Overall I wouldnt care. Give me a laptop whos battery last for over a week without charging while being used a lot, then maybe ill agree.

I have a desktop because I find them more comfortable to use. That is important if you spend as much time as I do on a computer. I can see them becoming a niche market but it will be a while before they disappear completely.

Desktops will never die for some reasons: 1. Desktops will always be cheaper, simply because they're easier to make and much easier to setup (you've heard of people making their own PCs, but obviously not their own Laptops). 2. Desktop wil always have better components as large chips and parts are impossible to put into a medium sized laptop. 3. Desktops will always have better heat management due to its larger case (increase airflow) and fan, which is important when performing high intensive tasks. 4. Desktops will always have a larger screen, so is important for people who generally use computers for gaming, watching movies, etc. 5. Desktops will always be more customizable and upgradeable, sort of related to number 1. In fact, when compaing two similary priced hardware, the PCs will always top the laptop in terms of functionality and hardware. When comparing PCs and laptops with similar hardware and functionality, the PCs still win do to its better heat management and more robust structure.

Not at all. If anything, we're going to see laptops die out completely as ultra-portable devices rapidly increase in capability, and the issue of input is eventually solved (crappy touch-screen keyboards are not the solution.) I think desktops, on the other hand, will have a place in the home for a long while yet. The only major change I foresee is that I think it'll eventually be common to have a home computer integrated with your entertainment center..which could have many consequences, including elimination of the need for dedicated gaming consoles. That's a long way off, though.

Now.. I know.. im just a girl >_> ... but i has an opinion on this. I do like my laptop for school. Its handy, cause i can take it with me to get my assignments done, considering i do online schooling and sometimes need to find a more reliable wifi. *shrugs* I have always had a hard.. er.. hat.. for laptops as well. I dont know why. *shrugs* again, im just a girl, tee hee tee hee. But When I look at the alienware laptops... and how flippin awesome they look and are, and that yea, they can do a hell of a lot of stuff.. then yea. But I do know desktops are cheaper (more then 50% of the time), and are more accessible to upgrade and such. *glares at her friends dead dell that shes been working on for him* yea. *shakes fist* much easier, desktops are. Still love my lappy tho.

No, I don't think the Desktop is in any danger.

It has better cooling capability, is easier to upgrade, and what with Intel, nVidia, and ATI continuing to crank out superb products, there will always be a demand for high-end computing.

Besides, my GPU is at 54 C right now...no laptop GPU can match and stay at 54.:P

Nor would it be able to stay under 80 C while running an uber-game.

No. Companies all over the world are still buying branded desktop. Game developer are using monster desktop to make games and monster mainframe to simulate their stuff. PC gamers are using monster desktop to run games to max and fill as many pixels as they can.

I doubt that will happen. You'll just get cloud services over it, it fits with the current trend and they can make more from it by getting commision off the services like Xbox Live does. [QUOTE="Fuhgeddabouditt"] hopefully I can customize them.

Unless you flash the firmware i doubt that will be possible. It makes more economic sense to lock you into a service. You may find Boxee TVs soon which would be customisable but i don't see that lasting long.

I already use a netbook for note-taking an various other school-related work when I am on campus. But when I am at my apartment, its my desktop computer I use almost all the time. I prefer the larger, comfortable keyboard, bigger screen and of course, more power for schoolwork and gaming :D

I seriously don't think so. A desktop is just more dependable in many aspects. Also they are upgradable which makes them a more serious competador in the market. I'd prefer a desktop over a laptop on my work station. At home a laptop is more preferable, but only because i am not using heavy applications. This is just my opinion.
