I own plenty of Apple stuff and I don't get it either. Some of their stuff isn't terribly overpriced and is legitimately good (e.g., iPod, MacBook Pro). But other stuff (e.g. Mac Pro, MacBook Air) is just stupid considering the price you pay.

As long as people buy it, Apple has no reason to stop overpricing it.

Well i guess my main point is though if the air is already $1000 does it not make more sense to just drop another $100 and get a mac book pro where you have all that is in a air and more?

Not if you want a smaller laptop. Size is obviously important to people if they are willing to spend that much.

it is more practical to have a macbook pro compared to an air (dont really feel like dragging windows computers into this argument :P) but people will pay for the novelty of having a super thin notebook, or to be different amongst mac owners

I would imagine the main selling point for the Air is size, weight, and portability. That and it looks a lot better than the plastic glossy netbooks.

This is going to my setup in college. Gaming pc in my room. $1000+ Crappy netbook for typing and light internet browsing on the go $200-$300 I won't ever be getting a full laptop because I will always want to have a custom built desktop.

No, because Netbooks run on weak Atom or equivalent processors. The MacBook Air runs on a Core i5.

There are some decent ones that are around for a bit more. I found one on sale for $500 that usually runs for a $1000. I forget the specs but its decent.

harashawn

Off topic but is that Natalie Portman in your sig?

OT: Well if you want something that thin the MacBook Air is the cheapest I have seen (which is shocking). Only other laptop i have seen that is that thin is a Samsung latop. Only difference I saw was that the Samsung laptop had a HDD where as the MacBook Air has an SSD. And the Samsung was a solid $400 more.

Other than that you are always paying a hefty premium with Apple products, it's how they have become the world's most valuble company.

I'm probably going to end up getting the cheapest netbook I can anyway. I'd rather pump more money into upgrading my desktop or saving up for when it comes time for a new build.

And why do you need that tiny of a laptop, you don't.

And to show, the top of the line mac book pro at 2499 can be had at falcon northwest one of the more expensive pc builders, same specs for about a grand less

Laptops are supposed to be portable, and the Macbook Air is extremely portable. I haven't held one, but I imagine you could put it in a bag and barely notice the weight. There's a lot of power crammed in the tiny package. As for the price, yes it's expensive, but it's not as bad as usual for Apple. A comparable Asus laptop (the U46SV, which isn't even out yet) runs about $800-$900.

I never understood why anyone would buy a Mac. I mean why would you pay 2000 dollars for a Mac with the same specs of a 400 dollar PC. PLUS you can't upgrade it and you can't play most games on it.

The processor runs at only 1.6 GHz. That is really slow, even for a laptop.

Unless you can modify the ferrari engine and hatchback to get the full power out of the engine. Like how microprocessors shrunk computers.

Professional media editing. That's why I bought my Mac. As a filmmaker, I need a computer that gets the job done quickly and efficiently. I've used Windows machines in the past to make movies, and they just don't cut it for me anymore. That's why I switched to a Mac. Not to say I hate Windows, because I don't. It's just that when it comes to getting my work done, a Mac fits me better than a Windows. And yes, you CAN upgrade a Mac. A Mac Pro, that is. Those high-end workstation computers are designed to put taken apart and re-built to your liking.

Not everyone buys a personal computer for gaming. That's why we have consoles to play on.

So it's honestly worth paying that much just to do that one task?:? Aren't there ways to improve this in Windows now?

And not everyone plays on consoles either, which is why many do PC gaming.

I use Windows for desktop computers/most of my games. I like Macbooks/Macbook Pros for laptops and I don't really have a need for something thinner or smaller.

The deal breaker for me, even if I was looking for something like the Macbook Air, is that it has no disk drive. I want a disk drive in any computer I buy (only in part because all my music is in CD form)
