he did not knock up mary:S he is not a HUMAN , according to the bible Mary got pregnant with jesus without having sex this is why she is called The virgin mary .He has to be a guy or else he couldn't knock up Mary! Sure God can hypothetically do anything, but - wait a minute...

good response:)Because the word means the male version of a deity. Otherwise it'd be goddess.

Hes probaly neither male or female, More then likely God can assume any form he wants that is if he exist.
To the guy about the Quran, well the Quran is not the bible first of all, and This is how we know the bible is still the same as it was always, for all your scoffers out there. And obviously people sayying "we will never know," you have to be living in some really deep rock not to know that jesus was god in the flesh. And was a man. Then what I really do not get is the people who act like "ITS THE PATRIARCHY," it is foolish talk. Well even though Eve was the one who bit out of the apple, Adam still had to answer, the very term woman, meant that she was apart of man. If you read that part, you realise that woman were made for the man, and not vice versa, so get over it. Besides, we have to work our butts off, woman just have to bake delicious cookies8).

[QUOTE="Anonymous_2"]The quran mentions God as "it". But translations always put He cuz "it" doesnt always sound right in english. Same thing may have happened with the bible since the original text is lost.
no it doesn't, it always says "him", there is no "it" in arabic
That doesn't mean Allah is male.
I am quite certain based upon societies back than that they saw him as a male.. Lets be frank none of these cultures treated women very well, and it doesn't seem accurate that they would some how decide to make their property to be in a form of a god as well.. Furthermore I can think of very few religions out there that has god not taking a human form (in which the gender has to be scrutinized.).God was taking a shower, and forgot to lock the bathroom door. an Angel really needed to go to the bathroom, and the angel opened the bathroom door just as God stepped out of the shower...

Another person who thinks that the Abrahamic religions treat women like objects, I see..
Ok, about the whole woman being treated such and such, its really just if you think your being treated badly, its all about perspective. Back then woman always wanted to have children, and just like Hannah in the bible, she was crying because she did not have children. Hannah, by the way, was much loved by her husband, so that destroys any arguement that anyone have about patriarchial society.

... No I said these cultures, plural meaning the vast majority.. I am not narrowing down one culture, the vast majority were socially prejudice against women and minorities.. Its no big mystery to why the vast majority of men held all the power, and wealth.. Where often times women were not given anywhere near the rights the lowest class of men had....You fail sir, women could not own property in the western cultures, they could not be in any places of power.. They didn't just want to be "baby factories" that is the stereotype men put them into, not women.. Your incrediably ignorant if you seriously think women wanted to be in just a disadvantageous position.. Where the father decided who the daughter was going to marry.. They were a commidity at best.. The only times this was an exception was due to royalty of sorts of being divinely choosen.. Perspective? Are you seriously this nieve.. Women to this day in large portions of the world have little to no rights.. I see so women wanted to not be in any leadership back than? Give me a break your claims and explainations are sad and pathetic.. If we were to put this in place instead of women, but blacks when it came to slavery.. You would be pointed out as a racist.. That the black people all they wanted to do is serve their white masters loyally.. ITS ALL PERSPECTIVE MAN! Yeah right..Ok, about the whole woman being treated such and such, its really just if you think your being treated badly, its all about perspective. i'm agnostic, but to think god is either male or female is just plain ignorantMetallicaKingsAgreed, hell I would argue if we had to argue which gender if we had to choose one it would be women.. After all god is supposedly a creator, and the female is the one that bares the children and such.. It seems only logical if we had to choose it would be a female figure.. But in the end its pointless, like I said its no surprise in the vast majority of these cultures, the gods they worshiped was most definitely a masculine figure..

Its np, its clear that the vast majority of ancient cultures were patriachal in nature.. To where the men controled the power, to where they controled the wealth.. Greek culture, Roman culture, ones that we would see socially advanced compared to other cultures were clearly controled by men.. Take for instance the vast history of Western and Middle Eastern culture.. You will notice that 99% of the famous figures mentioned are infact men, women at best play a minor supporting role, or at worse are completely ignored.. Very few women were able to distinguish themselves..I assume this is just a cute comment, right? Or do you actually perceive God to be gendered? He had a son named Jesus with the virgin Mary. That kind of clears it up for me.

I'll likely call someone a heretic if they refer to God the Father as a female. He had a son named Jesus with the virgin Mary. That kind of clears it up for me.

Thanks for clarifying; yeah, my (agnostic) perception would be that it would really only make sense for God to be beyond gender, encompassing or exceeding such, well "worldly" categories. He had a son named Jesus with the virgin Mary. Thanks for clarifying; yeah, my (agnostic) perception would be that it would really only make sense for God to be beyond gender, encompassing or exceeding such, well "worldly" categories.xaosHe has the qualities of both genders but is imagined as a male - thus why his image is of a male. What makes a male a male and a female a female? Well if you want to argue physical characteristics, God has neither since he is a metaphysical being. If you argue ways they respond emotionally, God encompasses both completely.
God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are often referred to as One within Scripture. In just the same way, man and woman are referred to as one. I personally think a lot can be gained out of this comparison (understanding the importance of married and problems with divorce, issues with homosexuality, understanding the roles of both gender and each being within the Trinity, etc.). In the end, however, one needs to be careful when gaining information out of this as it can simply be taken way to far in a way that is simply not biblical.
I'm pretty sure it's because of the power imbalance between the sexes that was very apparent back then. I personally believe that humans, and to be more precise, males created/invented the god concept and made 'him' to their image. I think it dates back to the very primitive ancestors of the human species, the physically stronger gender (male) ruled the world. It is believed that the role of women in ancient India was equal to that of men, that's probably a reason why there are so many hindu goddesses. To me this whole god thing is just a matter of power.
