UPDATE: Well since I started today they could finally tell us who we are representing and teching for. It is HP. So in my customer's eyes, I am an HP technician which is fantastic to me. It is a good resume padder, especially since I have already worked for Dell. Oh yeah, and the best part is that I really like the job.

I was whining a month or so ago here in OT about being out of work for 2 years cuz I was diagnosed with cancer back in 2009. Some of you may remember my thread asking for resume advice.

So long story short, I finally got a decent job.

I am a PC technician, have an AAS degree in Computer Technology and my A+ certification and worked for Dell for a few years too as a Senior tech. But I couldnt find work mainly because I had no work history for the last 2 years due to the cancer treatment and stuff.

Anyhow, I got what some would call a dream job. I am going to be doing Remote PC Hardware/Software troubleshooting. You basically pretend that you work for whatever company that you are representing that day because you are an outsourcer.

So what is so "Dream Job" about this? Well...I get to work from home!!! All they require is you have to have a good modern PC, have at least 2 years experience as a PC technician, a home LAND LINE telephone (No VOIP allowed)need a degree OR CompTIA A+, NET+, CCNA, MCSE etc...you get the idea.

So they will start me out at $14.00 an hour ($560 a week before overtime), which is not great or close to what DELL payed me, BUT I do not have to pay for gas at all. They just want to make sure you have a quiet work space. It is 40 hours a week guaranteed.

So do any of you think this a decent job? Thnk about it...you can get out of bed and work in your jammies or even naked if you really want. Smoke breaks are ALL THE TIME

Also, if anyone is interested send me a PM and I will send you the sitelink that does their hiring. They are still looking for people and sll you have to do besides what I stated above is live in the lower US.

Oh yeah, they pay weekly, none of that every 2 weeks BS. And any interviewing is done over the phone. I was offered a job with Verizon doing the same thing 2 days after they hired me but for only $13.00 an hour and 50 miles away in Tampa, FL.

that sounds mighty fine! 14 bucks an hour is really good for that type of work, especially considering you won't be paying for gas.

Just make sure you don't become a hermit lol, you gotta go out sometimes!

I would have to completely restructure my life if I was to live on that, but if it'll be an easy transition for you, and there's room to advance, then yeah that's pretty sweet.

That would be my dream job also. One of my professor told the class by like 2015, around 40% of the jobs can work from home. Not sure if that the correct persentage but its up there. If you can, send me the link please. Thanx alot.

Well to be honest, I am not going to do this for too long. At DELL I went from L1 junior tech to L3 senior technician taking manager escalations and sitting at a desk with a team of 30 junior techs under me in an advisory role. Thats more my style! Plus, to be honest I am missing out on the workplace friend thingy. you know, you always find a good comrade or too at work. Plus, there are not any sexy office hotties walking through my office any time soon ;) Another con: Leaving the workplace to find out that I am STILL at my workplace! There really needs to be a seperation for that kind of thing.

The idea of working at home is great. The temptation for some would be too great to slack off though. 14/hr seems very low though. Not sure I could survive on that myself.

Congratulations on finding a job but I agree with this. I mean, $14/hour at 40 hours/week is still less than $30K a year before taxes. And it sound like you are an independent contractor so that means you have to pay the entire 15+% of the FICA tax yourself. $30K/year really isn't a lot of money if you are an adult that has to pay bills, mortgage, etc. Also, given your situation, healthcare coverage should be a pretty big factor in determining how great your job is.

Not having the money to do the things you would like outside of work will quickly change your view point. But the opposite is neither true as well, making great money at a terrible job is no fun either.

I cannot stress how important it is to look outside the box when picking a career. I have a AAS and make $26/hour. The job isn't what I was going to school for but the job calls for a strong electronics background. There are good paying jobs out there, you just have to know where to look. That said your job is better than no job at all that is for sure. And a job with great opprotunities to advance is always a good thing. I also work from home but my job requires a lot of driving. Good thing they give me a company car as well. (P.S. I am watching the Red Sox and Yanks. Go Sox!!!!!!!! Bottom 10th!!!!!)

No man, It isn't a 1099 job, or contractor job thank god. i couldn't take care of my taxes like that. Today was my first day. The job is freaking great. Basically all you are doing is getting calls routed to you instead of to their call center. As for the $14 an hour, its actually good money for Florida and I think that is how they pay. It isn't $14 an hour set in stone. It depends on the wages of the city you live in. So someone living in CA or NY will probaly make more money to start. But what they wouldn't tell me before I started is who I am working for or representing. It is HP! Hewlett freakin Packard!! When I found that out it made me very happy to say the least. You only take HP out of warranty calls and sles are very minimal. You basically try to get them to purchase an after care contract once you have finished resolving their initial problem. The reason i am happy it is HP is because that is how I started with Dell. I started as a Dell outsourcer and was eventually hired by Dell themselves. Believe me, when you put down Dell and HP on your resume for future jobs it really catches job recruiters eyes. Plus even though I no longer work for Dell, I have lifetime FREE membership to their internal Certification program. So that means I can stay up-to-date on all my Dell certs and have to pay nothing for and new Certs I want to try for. It is the same thing for HP. I can tell you having as many certifications from major PC vendors is a good thing, especially when it is free. Some of these certifications go for over $100 each.

Now that is awesome. Good deal on that pay man. But I kinda had to take what i could get at this point. I am not trying to make a career out of this exact job but I have been out of the loop for over 2 years from when I was sick. And that had a major impact on who was interested. Many companies will not even look at someone that is not already working or has such a major gap in employment as I had. Plus, the job market is really not so hot in Florida. Matter of fact it sucks. So I am grateful for this right now. Better than the $275 a week that FL unemployment pays.

Working from home is awesome, i made $22 an hour and i crap you not... played World of Warcraft the entire time. I basically had to make 1 phone call during my 8 hour shift on 90% of days. unfortunately i got "promoted" and has to start sitting in a cubicle for 8-12 hours a day.
