Wait, hold on, what law is this based on? I have never heard of the idea that something you bought with your own money doesn't legally belong to you just because you live at your parents' house.

When you live in someones house you follow their laws. They can pretty much do anything they want with your stuff.

Um, I'm fairly sure that the legislative body of whatever country or political division you live in is what creates laws, not the owner of the house in which you live. :P

But why does everyone assume that when I say "everything" it just refers to the video games?

Even if I legally bought it myself? and they have done nothing to help me obtain it all?

So apparently everything I do in my parents house is useless and pointless?

I don't know all the legal info but his folks have full control over the items in their house. Regardless of age. If they want to take something away, they can do it. Do they technically "own" the items? I don't know.

Let me try again. Laws mean nothing when you live in someones house. Even if its illegal they can still do it. What are you going to do, call the police? Then where would you live?

Get a job and find a cheap place to live?

I mean if the person with whom you're living is actively destroying everything you own, that kind of seems a little preferable.

I think what's being said is the parents have the right to decide what they will allow in their house/apartment they are paying for. If your parents do not want a rated 'M' game inside their house, then they have the right to decide that. My wife and I also decided to not allow rated 'M' games as well. It's a decision the parents have to make on their own.

I have spent literally thousands of dollars on the things I "owned", I am about 2 or 3 years away from moving out, but she in general doesn't do jack for me.

It all started because apparently I can't play M games, even though I have owned them and bought them awhile back, she is now spazzing out on me for it, she thinks that all games that are M is the devil.

I haven't seen yet if you asked her why. Maybe I missed it, but I think that would be a good first step in finding out what changed. I only saw you state there was no reason I believe, but there has to be some reason. Have you asked her yet? I'm not sure how you were raised and I certaintly don't know anything about your family. In our family though, we are big on communication.

You need to stop being so dramatic for a minute and go talk to your mom. Work out some sort of deal with her to get your stuff back.

Talk to her about it rationally. Don't yell. Don't tell her you bought the stuff with your own money so she can't take it from you. Don't say anything that will make her mad if you want a chance to get your stuff (which is apparently your whole life) back.

If she still won't let you have the rated M games, well then that is her prerogative until you move out of her house. Come up with a compromise. See if she will allow you to sell them and keep your other stuff. Something like that.

Yeah, pretty much this.

Well not really. Friends arn't material things. I mean if you want to remove material things to force your own child to participate in more social activities then don't also tell them their friends are a bad influence. One or the other. What do you leave him with then? Education? That's great, more time to focus on your education, except it's not so great when your kid slips in to depression and then takes a trip up the bell tower. Far too often people will take the attitude that you need to put emphasis on education and enjoy life later. In reality it never works like that. The loneliness you experience in your youth carries forward to your adulthood. You don't form connections as easily, you don't have many friends. You could have a great job, but that dosn't mean you will enjoy life if you never learned how to live. You pretty much need to have things you enjoy in life in order to do well in education anyway. This sounds like a passing thing, a parent overreacting after an argument or something.

Still it gets a bit irritating when people almost instantly make the point of saying, "It's not your house." That dosn't excuse bad parenting. I'd like the think people would at least be given a good example of how to parent their child as a kid before they leave their own home because they can no longer stand it. People shouldn't be having children if they don't want to have to deal with them or allow them to develop as an individual. Still the TC is probably overreacting and he will likely have his consoles and guitars back in no time.

At this point you all probably think that I'm just another whiny tennager, which I can assure you all this is not the case.

Well, there is the fact that you are a teenager who is whining

[QUOTE="fueled-system"]if your under the age to play those games she has the right to take them away from you.

bloodling

The ESRB of Rated M means 17+

I am currently 17.

Still, she is in her rights. Even if she wasn't, you wouldn't go to court, would you?

I agree that 17+ means something, and I don't know why your mom doesn't understand that. But changing her mind won't be easy.

Probably not, but that doesn't mean I don't have the right to own the stuff I bought.

Dude, I think your mom is implying that you're not that M enough to play M games.

What have I done wrong to not be mature enough?

She can't permanently take the things away, claim ownership of them, or destroy them or anything, but I'm afraid that she can certainly regulate her household, and that means being able to tell people what they can and can't do while staying there. You can always move out and find your own place to live, and then request that she give back your things, which she legally must do since you own them.

Your mother has the right to punish her child however she wants (abuse being the exception). You're not considered an adult in the United States until you're 18. Deal with it.

But if ieh's under the age of 18 isn't she legally responsible for his well being? So if anything happens if he runs away or moves out it's on her right?

I had a real life story like this one too.

My father once told me "I created you and i will be your end! mofo"

So he hit me with a jab, passing me out.

I thought i was defeated, but no.

I had this dream or a vision if you will of hope conquering evil

As fast as the incident began, i awoke. Tight in his grasp i had fire in my eyes

In a rage i took my father down with my blades of kitchen knifes.

Having not been satisfied i through them down, using my fists to finish him in a bloody mess.

I hope this message really speaks to you

I'm not too brushed up on my laws relating to child-parent relationships, so maybe that's the case; I'm just saying that legally speaking a person has the right to regulate their own household, which means that, even if one owns something, they can be compelled not to use it within that household.
