[QUOTE="mattbbpl"]I'm pretty sure that's illegal.LegitGamer3212

Mcdonald's pulled some stuff like that on me, saying that I'd get put on payroll "in a week or two." the third day I worked there. When my shift was over, I made a couple double quarter pounders and left. Also, because everyone there hardly spoke in English or at least acted that way.

so you would've been a slave for them for 2 weeks if you stayed?

I guess. I learned the basics within the first day or so. The training was on the job. I was a chef, broiling burgers and preparing stuff...but I was getting payed 0$...or food if that counts.

I lost my job as a waiter last month, i got layed off. So yesterday i started a job at a cold cuts sandwich store. It's mostly making bubble tea, sandwiches, and bakery goods. I have to drive 20 minutes to get there and put quarters in the meter for parking not to mention gas. So yesterday i didn't get paid, today i didn't get paid. I asked him when will the pay start and he said when your training is over and your good at the job. Now obviously i'm not going to be as fast as the other employees because i just started. I don't know where everything is placed and i'm just not as good as the manager. So i go in again tommorow and on saturday. I doubt i'll get paid tommorow and i don't know about saturday. Should i say something to the manager tommorow or just keep quiet. thanks for any advice

What on Earth job doesn't start to pay you until you're out of training? I've never heard of such a thing.

GabuEx

Isn't training considered as a work trial?

as much as that sucks unless you have another job you are currently capable of getting you don't seem to have much of a choice.

Yeah, I was bothered. Partly because I wasn't fluent in Spanish and partly because I worked there for 2 and a half days without asking about the payroll. That was the first business I've ever worked at. I've been so focused on Chinese and Japanese that I haven't bothered with Spanish. I'm gonna start studying that language again now.

I think what you are currently doing qualifies as an internship and not a job as long as you are not being paid. Times are tough for sure, but you have to decide if you want to work at a place that asks you to work unsalaried until they decide you are useful. Honestly, this kind of practice to me makes sense if you want to work at a film production company etc - you know, at a place where people really want to work because it is in their interest and where jobs are traditionally difficult to get unless you "know" somebody. This kind of practice at the place you describe seems a bit out of place, and me personally I wouldn't stand for it. But only you can decide if getting a salaried job at this place is actually worth it.
