You should have informed your professor early on once you felt your partner wasn't doing his fair share of work. Sometimes, it may help if the professor knows about the situation early, since some professors may be inclined to be more lenient on your grades or be more forgiving in terms of deadlines in cases like this. It's a bit too late now for all this though. Do your best to finish as much of your assignment as you can. Good luck.silentexistence
I actually did inform the professor, many times in fact, and he didnt listen to what I had to say untill I met with him today. He couldnt even do his share of the work on his own, he always had his roommates (who were all CS majors) do it for him.
Ive been reading what you guys have had to say, and just to clarify a few things:
1) we get one lab assignment a week
2) for every lab assignment we do get, he always had to reschedule it with me because he was always either hungover, or working out (which is understandable because he is a football player). Whenever I propose meeting to work on it on the day we assignment, it always gets pushed back till the night before its due.
3) The only reason he ever finished his fair share on our labs was because he always had his roommmates (3-4 computer science majors) holding his hand through his portions and practically doing the lab for him.
4) the lab that we were on was our first forray into graphics. considering that this is an intro class and im just learning, not to mention that we are going from designing tables to drawing pictures in a week (which is a big step for me), naturally im going to get stumped and need help myself (nevermind the fact that the lab itself was designed for 2 people to work on)
5) if anyone wants to know, the language we are working with is java
Too bad your professor is the unreasonable type, then. Not much you can do in that case other than to just do your best.I actually did inform the professor, many times in fact, and he didnt listen to what I had to say untill I met with him today. thats true! all anyone can ever ask you at the end of the day. my plan is to solo the last 2 labs and get at least 90% on both and on the final. hopefully i can make up for the performance on this lab then
At least you have some more labs to get your grade back up. You're also lucky you're using Java for your labs - it's one of the easiest languages to learn and get used to.thats true! all anyone can ever ask you at the end of the day. my plan is to solo the last 2 labs and get at least 90% on both and on the final. hopefully i can make up for the performance on this lab then

really? It seems about the same to me as using C++ imo. My prior experience with programming includes a high school C++ class and modding for Doom :P
My problem isn't as bad as yours but i still think its funny. Today we were doing a lab in chemistry. Its on stoichiometry where we have to make an exact amount of a product. We spent to lab periods mixing the chemicals and doing the reactions. With five minutes left in class we had to seperate the water from the chemicals to measure the product and my teacher came over to look at it. As it was filtering he hit the beaker and the filter spilling everything on the lab table. He completly screwed up the lab, but at least he promised to make it up to us. I think i will do a written lab for this one and attribute any error to him.
In my comp sci college course, we got assigned lab partners. I had a good thing going with being partners with one of my friends (we were getting all A's and B's on the labs), but for whatever reason, the professor ignored our requests to continue being partners, and I got stuck with some jock who knows nothing about computer science.
That was about 3 weeks ago. flash forward to now, and we only ever get C's or D's on our labs. My lab partner starts giving me crap when I asked him if he did his portion of the lab we were working on (or I was working on, since he was gone that day due to a family emergency). So we make plans to meet that weekend to finish the lab off. That weekend, he tells me that he hadnt worked on his parts of it at all and had dropped the class, which pretty much means that He left me with a 2 person's worth of work lab assignment thats about 20% done. I asked the professor for an extension and a new lab partner. He extended it about a day, but gave me no new partner. So now, the assignment is due tomorrow, and I got about 1/10th of a lab done because I cant figure out the rest.
what, OT, should I do?

I enjoy your suffering D: I must be a bit sadistic.
Welcome to life. It doesn't matter that it was your lab partner's fault and not yours. Bottom line is that you get judged on the quality of the work, and the work sucks. If you've known that he's unreliable, then FIRST pick up his slack. Do the whole thing yourself in order to ensure that YOU don't get screwed. THEN go and complain about how he didn't do any of the work, so he shouldn't get any credit. First watch your own ass. If that requires doing his work, then that's what you do. Take care of yourself, THEN complain about the other guy.In my comp sci college course, we got assigned lab partners. Sounds like you screwed yourself over.

I gotta agree. You know your partner is a loser so it's time to do some damage control. I hate partnering up only because of this scenario. Usually labs are fun and you get paired with cool people but that is not always the case. And labs will happen because you are going to be judged by your ability to work with others. The same thing is going to happen when you get a job. It WILL happen. Do what you can but learn from this so that you're ready when it happens again. Oh yes it WILL happen again.
