So I was accused and nearly arrested for Shoplifting...

So I went to K-Mart, see...

Out of the entire town, K-Mart has the cheapest things in their inventory. I went in there to buy some personal items, a perscription,a DVD, and a drink. Thankfully, I could just check-out in the electronics department and I paid for my items.

As soon as I walk out:

"Sir!"

I stop before leaving.

"Yes?" I ask

The woman who runs Customer Service asks me to show her the receipt and the items inside my bag. I wasn't comfortable with it mainly because of my perscription and refused. I paid full for my items and feel like I shouldn't be stopped.

I said no.

She asks me again that she HAS to see my receipt. Again, I say no.

She threatens to call the Police due to the belief I may be shoplifting. She gets the manager, he takes me in the office, and we wait for the Police. I'm asked if I shoplifted and I said "no". The manager then takes out all my items and goes through them through the receipt.

And guess what? I PAID FOR THEM ALL!!!!

The Police and Manager then release me. And I go home.

So how do you guys feel about this? You pay for something, you should be let go instead of being embarassed in front of the public for something you CLEARLY didn't do.

You would have avoided a mess if you showed her the receipt.

Could have showed them the receipt... life would have been easier.

You should have just shown her the receipt. I understand you not wanting to show her your prescriptions but you could have just pulled them out of the bag to show her that you had nothing else in there. I know Frys and Costco check over your stuff before you leave the store everytime and check your receipt. It isn't really private stuff like a prescription could be but still. Would have saved you alot of hassle.

It's understandable as to why you're frustrated, but it could've been easily avoided if you just showed your receipt in the first place.

At the risk of sounding unoriginal; you should have shown the receipt! How would they know you weren't shoplifting if you didn't show proof?

Just man up and show them instead of wasting their time, and yours. Saying you wont show them just makes you suspicious.

Yeah, but people can easily get past those anyway by taking off security tags, etc. I know people that shoplift and they never get caught.

It's not going to change, man. Just show them the receipt and leave. I promise you, they aren't even going to comment on what you bought.

I've worked in a few places similar to K-Mart, such as Fred Meyers and Target. At these places customers aren't required to show receipts to leave the store. K-Mart isn't Costco or Sam's Club. They're just a regular store with electronics and other goodies. OP, you made the mistake by not leaving. K-Mart can't legally detain you. You're free to leave whenever you want, they aren't the police.

The receipt is proof you paid for the items. If the person at customer service or the manager didn't see you pay, then how should they know you did? Next time just show it and not inconvenience yourself.

I've worked in a few places similar to K-Mart, such as Fred Meyers and Target. At these places customers aren't required to show receipts to leave the store. K-Mart isn't Costco or Sam's Club. They're just a regular store with electronics and other goodies. OP, you made the mistake by not leaving. K-Mart can't legally detain you. You're free to leave whenever you want, they aren't the police.

edit - I remember one time when I was working at a grocery store I went into the store to pick up my check and when I was coming out an undercover security guard grabbed me and would not let me go. He thought I had come in and stole something as I did not stop at a cash register. I had to wait till the manager came to prove I actually worked there. (I was in street clothes and not work uniform)

Why didn't you just show her the receipt. The receipt is given as a proof of purchase. So if you don't show your receipt you can't prove you purchased it which gives the vendora reason to believe you didn't purchase the items. You caused your own problem so don't complain as if it's not your fault.

Are yousure they were police? They weren't security? Normally security would handle that.Police don't arrest people for stealing, not unless it's grand larceny or related to a violent crime or a crime that warrants arrest. They just file their report and the city mails you a summons.

If it's any consolation taking you to a "back" room is false imprisonment. But you just should of showed your receipt when it was asked.

The only other thing to say about this is that I was ashamed and embarassed of my perscription.
