Dvds are here to stay for a long time. The difference between VHS & DVD is that DVD proved it's usefulness right out the gate. It was better quality, more features, and the movies were just as cheap, if not cheaper than VHS.
And around that time the PS2 came out and it integrated DVD support and just for the same price as a standalone Dvd player (at the time) it was cheaper to get a PS2 (unlike Blu-Ray where the prices are all over the map). You could have a game system and a dvd player!
But lets fast forward ahead to present day. Blu-Ray has won another war where the only loser is the consumer, except this time they are expecting Blu-Ray to have just as fast an adaption as DVD. Won't happen. Why? The price, no notable extra features that isn't already offered on DVD, and most consumers can't even tell the difference between normal and Hi-Def content, 5-15 dollar price hike on movies, cheapest player isn't even a PS3.
And if you've noticed, the last few months Blu-Ray player and movies sales have been declining at a rapid rate. Blu-Ray will pick up,but will it overtake Dvd? Thats debatable, but as it's looking now, no.
Blue rays are gonna go the way of the HD DVD.harashawn
Then what will come? If they disappear what will we put HD movie on?
i, as well as many analysts, figure that blu-ray is an intermediate hd medium and that regular dvds will be around for a while, blu-ray will go the way of hddvds, as was said, and direct downloads will become viable and popular.
I see direct downloads being popular with things such as netflix and the use of dvd players with hard drives, which already exist. But these dvd players would have replaceable hard drives and connect to the internet. While the internet speeds and prices are getting better all of the time, dvds will stay in use for sometime as not everyone has access or can afford the internet but anyone can go down to wal-mart and get a dvd player for $15.
I personally am looking forward to direct downloads, though I have dvds, I burn and stream through my 360 a lot more than I buy dvds. I am much more interested in the movie than the boxart.
I say no. I see both being replaced by digital downloads/rent. (i forgot the proper term to use)Tjeremiah1988
The problem with being replaced by digital download is that, a 20gig Blueray movie, even on the fastest cox connection will take Hours maybe even days to download. Thats really not appealing to me.

but you can watch while its downloading. I dont know if I should use ps3 download service as an example but someone ask the sony pr person how long will it take to dl a HD movie, he said 2 hrs but you can view it while its downloading. To me, it doesnt sound bad at all But I see what your saying.

it's not possible with a 20 gig blueray movie though... a 2 hrs movie that takes 26hrs to download means, the movie will take 26hrs to play.. So you are having lag and lots of break time in between frames.
Bluray will take over eventualy, but i see DVD sticking around awhile
as for bluray player, i'm gona go with a PS3, its a bluray player with gaming capibilitys! :D

i don't know where you are dl'ing from but you can dl hddvd and blu ray rips from torrent sites and they are not 20 gigs. You can dl all episodes of Planet Earth 720p hddvd rips which total 26 gigs. You won't need to dl 20 gig blu ray movies as they are decompressed and have a bunch of language tracks, instead you will be able to dl compressed videos in specific languages.

I'm talking entire Bluerays, with commentary and special features, I don't just want the movies, I want some of the special features too, and that takes up about 20gig. Thats why digital distrubution won't be the norm there are no special features, commentaries and menus.

Why would you assume that broadband is going to stay the same speed it is right now?

I don't I know it is getting faster but it will stay to slow to have download and watch simulateously for at least 5-10 more years.

Huh? Netflix streaming service is great, it's here now. HD streaming is coming probably within the year.
That is streaming, not digital distribution I don't want streaming I want a DVD with menus, special features, the movie, commentaries, you can't do that with streaming thats why it isn't effective.

Why can't you do that with streaming? Just doesn't seem like anyone has done it.
I'm sure someone will give us HD movie downloads eventually, I'd hope Apple might try it since they're making bank and already have the system to do it on (iTunes or Quicktime).

Because streaming menus system along with optional special features to millions at the same time would take servers that yet to be invented, steaming movies is fine but it has a long way to go if it wants to compete with blueray disks.
It's not that hard to do. The only issue like you mentioned is doing it in high def, but I'm still sure there will be something like what you describe within a year or two.Because streaming menus system along with optional special features to millions at the same time would take servers that yet to be invented, steaming movies is fine but it has a long way to go if it wants to compete with blueray disks.

I'm not saying it's going to happen, I'm just saying Blueray will replace DVD, and eventually Digital Distribution will replace BlueRay.. But that is a while from now, as not everyone can hook their PC's up to their computer, that is for like 5% of PC owners. So once TV's w/ internet become cheap and available it will happen, but that will be many years from now.
Just wondering if Blu-ray is going to replace dvds as the major movie format. Also wanted to know if it is a good idea to buy a bluray player; if so, what specific brand/type of bluray player is worth the money.brownthrilla
yes i think so.... you should get a ps3 plays blu ray movies and so much more!
DVDs are going to be here for a very long time still (probably another 5-10 years). As for Blu-ray players, well, when I'm ready, I'll just get a PlayStation 3 since I will use that for both video games and movies.Thorpe89Same here. If not for FFXIII coming to the 360 I might have bought a PS3 sooner rather than later.
Either Blu-Ray or some HD download format will. I'm kind of leaning towards Blu-Ray since I don't think the mainstream audience or living room hardware is quite ready for the latter just yet. I think the Playstation 3 and the XBox 360 are going to play a key role in getting people started buying movies that way, just as the PS2 did much to push forward the DVD movie format.
I have to admit that even I myself kind of prefer to have some kind of physical object if I'm going to pay money for something. I have paid money for some games through download services though, like some of the Guild Wars (which can only be played online anyway) chapters and a few older titles on Steam. I don't think I would have anything against buying movies this way, as long as I could feel confident I would be able to re-download them far into the future. I'd also want it in a format that is not tied to a specific company's hardware, which for me actually kind of rules out the console movie downloads for the time being.
I do not think so.
For starters, notable problem with Blu-Ray is that in order for person take advantage of its best features, you need additional device, one of which that many Americans still do not have.
Beyond that, I still argue differences between Blue-Ray and DVD are insignificant, in comparison, to say, they were with than that of DVD and VHS.
Digital distribution, on the other hand, is where I would say the future is at.

If The Grid ever goes online, the problems you speak of will be thing of the past.
