[QUOTE="mattbbpl"] Huh. Yeah, I've done both the retail and manual labor stints before. I'd do them again if I had to, but I'm not going to seek them out :Pmattbbpl

The worst part is since it's a smaller store, we don't have departments that we are assigned to. We are sales for the entire store so we constantly have to run all over the place to help customers who get pissy at you because they had to wait and don't understand that you're one of, if not the, only sales guy there at the moment.

Retail sales kind of stinks in general, so I imagine that being the only guy to gripe to would be tiresome. I thought you had a degree. Maybe it's in the works?

I do have a degree but when the economy took a shit, I landed this job in the mean time. I enjoy my co-workers enough that I've just kind of stayed with it. The job has it's ups and downs but I've just kind of settled into this. It's not what I expected with a degree, but whatever. :P

You aren't the boss's brother or his best buddy so of course you won't get the job, it's all about who you know, not what you know. It sucks but that's what Managers do... whatever they want that suites themselves best. My mate worked at IBM for 7 years and the place had a new manager about every 4 months because the big guys always knew someone who begged them and swayed them into the position which of course rarely if ever panned out as they were always replaced.

You have just seen how the real world works first hand, nothing if fair, everyone is selfish and greedy.

Well, that's good.

Hey, if you ever do decide to look for a different position, there are actually some really good jobs in sales. They're both more pleasant (although this would differ based on your personality, I guess) and more lucrative. These jobs are typically B2B positions with high value/volume sales. Think selling airplanes, industrial equipment, or enterprise software.

Yeah, I've kind of become the statistic that a lot of economists were afraid of. College grads that took lower level jobs (retail, grocery stores, foods, etc.) because the economy sucked and then ended up just staying in those jobs once the economy starts to recover. I really do need to start looking at a better paying job sometime soon though. Gonna ask the general manager for a raise first though.

Not to sound callus or anything, but deal with it. You work at a f***ing Walmart, what do you expect? Besides, what makes you think you are the most qualified? Sure, you did great as a cashier and the management seems to like you, but from what I can tell you have zero experience at any level of management. Why should you get to jump the que? You should have to work your way up the ladder like everyone else. If you are as qualified as you say, you should progress in no time.

I'm literally the only person trying out for this job that isn't a slacker... They constantly put me in other positions because they know I'll get it done...

this is why you won't get promoted.  You're the "I'll do it guy".  You make their lives easier.  You're the "yes man".  If you get promoted, you'll make their lives harder, because you'd make them do things.  This is really common in retail/office type jobs where people generally do not need to take much pride in their work and can just go through the motions.

I suggest you find a new line of work, because the bureaucracy and bullshit is only going to get worse the further you worm yourself into the system.
