So science won today

I know this study has a lot of big words and big phrases that most people would never look up proper (trust me you shouldn't), so I hope the briefing of this subject gets the point accross in one sentence or less.

Scientists discovered the cure for HIV/Aids and tied the evolution of mankind and apekind in a single bound by looking at DNA that humans already have and reawakening them.

We can start celebrating on the streets now.

Nah, its a real link, but I don''t undestand it very well. It talks about what Prime ates use to defend against disease like AIDs.

No. What they did was find a way to reactivate a dormant gene that grants a person greater resistance to HIV. Other primates still have this gene active and thus HIV is much less of a problem for them. In the process of our evolution though that gene got turned off. It's still there, it's just not functional. Unless of course you do what these guys did.

You won't be seeing this as a treatment anytime soon though. All this study says is "hey look what we can do!". Now the subject will get researched more thoroughly and if all goes well and smoothly we might see this used clinically in about 10 years.

On top of those with HIV/Aids without the funds to buy powerful coctails to keep them alive (and the companies who profited off of them every step of the way), it disproved all religions whose premise was that the human design was in fact divine and not necessary to mess with.

I said holding a religion where the pastor/rabbi/etc claims the body is the final and elite temple of all is now a lot harder because of this.

well some people in africa alrady have awoken these genes naturally and have been passing on an imunity to HIV for a couple of generations now :D

This isn't a cure they basically found a resistance to HIV-1 that primates have in humans as well, it's 7 million year old gene that needs to be re-awoken and can be a resistant to the HIV-1 infection. It mentions no cure there.

This has been known for quite some time.

Retroviruses, such as HIV, have long been known to be in the humanand primate genome. Soem discussion on ptERFV1: Evidence suggests that this specific retrovirus plagued chimpanzees, humans and gorillas about 4 million years ago. A modern human protein called Trim5a works to prevent PtERV1 and related retroviruses from replicating. Shari Kaiser from the University of Washington tested this idea by resurrecting the retrovirus PtERV1 and injected it into mammalian cells. The human Trim5a protein halted the infection before the virus could even reach our DNA. However this makes us vulnerable to another retrovirus that has been listed in this section: HIV. During the course of evolution humans made an important change in the amino acid sequence of Trim5a. When Kaiser changed the protein back to it's original form it gained the ability to fight HIV but lost the ability to fight PtERV1. These findings are helping researches in understanding why HIV infection leads to AIDS in humans but not in non-human primates. (Source, From June 23 2007)
