Some guy in a Wal-Mart asked me if I was "saved" recently. I kind of hesitated and he handed me some pamplet about going to hell if you don't accept Jesus as your lord and savior, etc...

I hate that crap. I would have tossed it on the ground right in front of him. No one hands me stupid pamphlets trying to recruit me for their religion.

My sister's asked me before... I don't think the religous people where I live care about if people believe or not, they just preach kindness and love. Actually, Seventh Day Adventists go door to door, but we just ignore them :P

I've had that happen a few times from the bible thumpers that come door to door, and once from a woman handing out pamphlets at the library. I just say no I don't, they ask why that is, I shut the door.

If you're actually interested in talking about it, just play the Aristotle card. Ask them "What is God?". They probably won't be able to give you a good answer, because nobody really knows what God is anyway.

I honestly believe we Christians usually go about trying to get people to believe in the wrong way. That pamphlet should not have been a giant warning. Instead it should have been talking about how great both heaven and God are and that it you will be able to live the rest of your days in in peace and happiness.

I used to commute to NYC. On a daily basis I experienced Presbyterians at the train station in my town, fire and brimstone screaming black dude in Newark Penn Station, old Hispanic Pentecostal ladies with literature in NY Penn Station, more screaming apocalypse guys in Times Square, Jews for Jesus literature on the way home in Grand Central, and some guys asking me to pray with them in NY Penn.

Last time I was asked that question it was by an elderly woman in the critical care unit of our hospital. She was very ill, but managed to ask me that question and hand me a small laminated card that explained who Jesus was and how he fit into the bible story along with scripture verses for reference. She easily had more faith than any other person I've ever met. Her husband was a pastor and she was so kind about it and so pure-hearted that it almost made up for every other atrocity I've seen committed in the name of God and Christianity.

When I meet those guys, I usually just say something like, "I'm really in a hurry, give me a pamphlet and I'll look over it later." They give me a pamphlet, I say thanks, then I throw it away in the first garbage can I find.

That reminds me of this guy Bob that was a janitor at my old work. "I like watching the Olympics. What would you think if the Muslims ran this country?" "When I was at my first job, my manager put his hand right down in my front pocket." "You know, when I was in Vietnam, I pulled out my gun and put it right in my mouth... what do you think about people who do those things?"

Funny, recently, my stepdad asked me that same question while me, him, my mom, and my two little brothers were eating dinner. Needless to say, I actually didn't give him a straight answer. I said something that may hint that I don't believe, but I never really bluntly said it. Probably because my mom was there and her lectures gets annoying. I don't believe she would respect my opinion so easily on that subject.....

I think it would have to depend on how or why the topic was brought up. If it sounds really shallow and being brought up just for the sake of it, yeah I would probably be anoyed. I don't mix well with the general church crowd.

im a Catholic.. and i disagree with that way. seriously, coming up randomly to someone and telling them they'll go to hell if they don't believe in what i believe in totally REEKS of paranoia if you ask me. it's a sign of mental instability. in my opinion, such people need a mental check up. theyre likely suffering from some form of obsessive compulsiveness - constantly checking if they did things right or perfectly - according to what they think God thinks. it's unfortunate. they might become delusional if they keep this up. people should keep to themselves their beliefs. it's a personal thing. i think, no matter how nicely you ask it, you should never ask someone WHY they do or do not believe in God. it's an intrusion no matter how you say it, but that's just me.

I never force it. Ever. Simply put, my life completely revolves around Jesus and thus with any mention of myself he is brought up. Heck, I'm a seminary student whose life revolves around the church, the study of Scripture, and the sharing of Scripture, how could the topic not be brought up occasionally? To give you an example, last night some co-workers warned me that they were going to say something inappropriate. My response? Putting my hands over my ears and singing Jesus Loves Me.
