I read one chapter of the first book, and saw 30 minutes of the movie. That's all I personally could ever handle.
but why?

For me it was the really subpar writing style on Stephanie Meyer's part, and just the fact that it's completely aimed at angsty 13 and 14 year old girls. Plus, glittering vampires.... I've said enough..
The books are badly written, but mostly harmless (except the last book, which is just WTF inducing that that's supposed to be for young girls). Possibly worth reading due to some unintentionally humorous writing, and occasionally some intentional humor...
The first movie I thought was actually only mediocre. Wooden acting to be sure, but I see where the director was going with it, even if I didn't like it, I could totally understand somebody else doing so.
The second movie however... SOO many irrelevant conflicts and some of the most cringe-inducing dialogue in recent memory. The kind of movie that makes me wish MST3k was still around. Some of Jacob's lines had me in my brother in stitches...

ah corney gayness got it
Thanks to twilight the vampires image has been tarnished...and jacob turns into a dog not a werewolf
Yeah, the part about the guy running around trolling people claiming to be a vampire yet having no vampire qualities and actually sparkles kind of helped me hate it.
lmostly because my image of vampires differs greatly of that from the movie
my image of vampires are like the one's in blade and in dracula...not some emo teenagers that live in the suburbs, oh and sparkle
To me, the whole series comes off as extremely misogynistic. Bella seems completely one dimensional and is willing to do anything to be with the one she loves, regardless of the consequences. And the sad thing is, a lot of girls love this. What kind of message is that sending to them?
It wasn't as bad as people said it was. The Vampire, Werwolf story arch is good. It just gets ruined by the love story because the girl is so, blah. She's hopelessly inlove with 2 different people, the vampire in particular.
It gets even more ruined by the fact that girls just go mental for this movie because they all want to be "hopelessly inlove".
In all honesty, it really isn't that bad.

I've watched the movie... it was awful on every front. That includes the writing and plotline - and seeing as that's based on the book, I have a fair reason to believe that the book's similarly weak without reading it.
First, there's the fact that you can tell that Meyer's sexually deprived in some of the scenes - like when Edward exposes his toned chest under a ray of sunlight (by the way, this scene made me laugh so hard) - and the entire cast of characters (except the bad guys, who are obviously tacked on) is made up of a bunch of Mary Sues and Marty Stus. The're all a bunch of glittery fleshbags with so little personality that any analysis of them doesn't do anything except bore the crap out of you.
Because it's a poorly written piece of crap glorified Harlequin Romance. I got half way through the first book and just couldn't finish it. And vampires shouldn't be emo *****es that sparkle like fairies.
I downloaded the movie thinking I was going to see vampires killing each other and whatnot with a little love story sprinkled in but instead I got vegetarian vampires that play softball in the woods and sparkle in the sunlight. ****ing stupid! /facepalm You know, I used to think that I could stomach love stories but I swear lately they've been really stupid, like that movie The Time Traveler's Wife. The guy has all the time in the world yet he can't spend it with the woman he loves? He only shows up when he wants to knock boots and he leaves her to raise their daughter all by herself. The b***h is a ****ing tool  which is a shame because the actress who portrays her is very beautiful.scifi type people seem to hate it, never seen it personally, just wondering what all the hate is about

I'm a SciFi person. I hate anything fantasy oriented. I hate LOTR, Harry Potter, Ghost Hunters, the old vampire crap -Blair Witch whatever, Interview with a Vampire... and the new vampire carp. All this twilight stuff. I like my fiction to at least make an attempt at being based on reality. SciFi does that, for the most part. All that other crap does not. Its all based on "Magic" not Science. And you will notice all that other crap seems to REALLY appeal to the ladies... for some reason.

I have no problem with the dislike of Twilight, but it strikes me as odd that so many people, particularly guys, have taken up some kind of cause about how 'sick' the series is, the wrong message it sends, etc. There are thousands of movies, books, commercials, games and tv shows that send negative messages and ideas to and about women every single second of every single day. No one gets one bit as upset about those. Yes the popularity of the Twilight stuff means lots of girls are being sent its particular messages but it doesn't mean its readers are getting any fewer messages in other places. They were before the books came along and they will continue to afterwards. But it's like because this 1 thing got SO much female following, it was merely the easy thing for people to rip apart. There are lots of other things just as terribly written, poorly acted, 'gross', negatively impacting, etc. Some may be even worse. If you're going to hate for those kind of reasons at least make it more believable by being an equal opportunity and somewhat fair hater. It's not terribly convincing when all you complain about is one easy target. (Not directed at anyone in particular, just a meh rant. At 2 in the morning... blah.)

I never said that the series was "sick", nor do I consider myself a "hater" my perspective on it is indifference; I'm not the target audience for it. This is from the perspective of a non-fan who's not too familiar with the series as a whole who's just putting in his own take on it. Yes, there are plenty of shows and whatnot that paint women in an unflattering light (hell, take a look at just about any show on MTV, for example). What I find interesting is that the whole series is written by a woman, yet the main character seems just so submissive and weak. I think some girls read these books, and wind up having unrealistic expectations in real-life relationships, because their man isn't exactly like Edward. Meanwhile, you have something like Buffy the Vampire Slayer in which the main character is a confident, strong person in comparison to Bella...and it's written by a guy. Like I said, I'm not the target audience for it. Girls have a franchise for them to enjoy, and I say let them have at it.Because everybody hates it and I wanna be cool, ya know? I like to be a follower.
No seriously, the movie sucks.

Your post didn't sound totally indifferent to me but whatever, that's on me, and I'm aware that you never used the word sick.
Women clearly aren't required to write all female characters as strong and confident. But is that automatically expected to happen? I'm quite curious, actually. It doesn't surprise me in the least that a woman can write about a weak female and that a man can write about a strong one. It's nothing to make a big deal about to me. Girls may definitely believe those messages from this series and in no way would I support that happening. But as with any of the other million things that send them the same and worse messages I would hope they were capable of differentiating between fiction and reality, right and wrong, healthy and creepy. If they aren't capable of grasping that then I can't really in the end blame the series. A work of fiction shouldn't be raising children or parenting anyone's teen. As long as they get the big picture, yea, let them have it. Who knows how many of them DO get the big picture though considering all the junk thrown at them at once these days.
Oh its not so bad, if you don't take it seriously,
just not exactly on my list of favorite movies.
The standard audience it caters too is pretty .. immature, but what
are you gonna do?
I skimmed through the books before i saw the first movie..i'd say
its pretty much on the same level, albeit you do a lot more reading and time
wasting.
Pretty much most of the reasons that people have listed here, but the clincher for me is the bad writing(in the movies & the books). I've seen the 1st Twilight movie & read New Moon just out of curiosity. I think the reason that there is such an "anti-twilight" movement is simply not just because it is bad(it really is!), but because it is SO popular, and how it's fans try to convince you it really is good. I don't really care if you like garbage, I do too, just don't try to convince me it isn't garbage, that's all I'm saying.
It's just the cool thing to do. Really.
I'm betting most people that claim to hate it, really don't. Just jumping on the bandwagon. And the whole "glittering vampires" argument is so weak, as if whether or not vampires glitter in the sun will make or break movies and books. I'm also fairly certain that a sizeable amount of haters have never read any of the books or seen any of the movies beyond trailers on youtube.
Twilight has become socially acceptable to troll, so people troll it at any given oppertunity, as in the fanbase. It's really just a clash of opposing infantile opinions.

Yep.
This is true. I admit to being one of the few who has never even seen the trailer. But some things just need to be trolled. :lol:It's just the cool thing to do. Really.

Yep.
I may be on the bandwagon, but I gave the movie an honest chance, and even the book.. It's just not aimed at my demographic so I really didn't like it. Check out this hilarious video of Twilight fans getting punked big time:
