Your right, I'm not. It's bad news. But still, just because somone is unarmed, it doesn't mean they're not a terrorist. I mean that's just what terrorists want to look like, just an innocent civilian, until...BOOM!!! another poor chap gets blown up.

Oh well. War can make people 'lose their moral compass' as he said...... In fact in may require you to lose it in some instances. All very well being armchair moralists without living the life through the eyes of a soldier in Afghanistan and understanding psychological diversity/capacity to deal with war/etc.. Just saying....

poptart

You're "just saying" that soldiers are justified or excused when plotting the murder of innocent civilians?

Not at all. Just that soldiers are thrust into war the physical armoury to cope with what's ahead of them but not the mental capacity to cope. People react in different ways - if you're job is to kill and de-humanise the enemy, then for some it may be hard to seperate that from day-to-day living.... I'm not excusing, merely pointing out that we all react differently to stimuli...

I understand. That still doesn't mean they should at all be excused or get lighter sentences. Soldiers are no Gods among men.

If he was killing Americans, he'd get the chair.

I've seen what some of the insurgents are capable of first hand. A buddy of mine almost got killed and took shrapnel that messed up his foot because an insurgent dressed in an Iraqi police uniform came into the cafeteria he served in and blew himself up (another Soldier and a civilian contractor who was retired military was killed in the explosion). But while people like that may make you hate the enemy, it doesn't give you the excuse to commit murder. A Soldier like him just makes ALL of us look bad, since the knee-jerk reaction for people who are already a little anti-military is to assume that all Soldiers are cold-blooded killers. I had to escort more than one Soldier to jail for crimes they committed, so I can tell you from first hand experience all of them aren't saints but when it gets on the news like this it overshadows the many Soldiers who served or are currently serving honorably.

That is the military court system for you. A regular citizen killing three people would get life imprisonment with no chance of parole, or the death penality in states that support it. At least he wasn't let off on probation like a lot of military criminals are.

But still, just because somone is unarmed, it doesn't mean they're not a terrorist.GOGOGOGURT

Actually, that makes them an unarmed civilian who is innocent of any and all charges until they take up arms against another. And AFAIK there have been more homegrown terrorist attacks in the US since 9/11 than foreign terrorist attacks. When was the last public massacre again? Oh right, later last year.

Wow... what racism. They are human beings just like us. Many of them seek freedom but are faced with incredible amounts of both political and religious oppression.

He'll be serving his sentence in the United States Disciplinary Barracks inFort Leavenworth, Kansas. All inmates there are military, so him saying he's a Soldier while confined there would be like somebody incarcerated in Los Angeles bragging they're a Crip or Blood; there's about a thousand more with them.

Also, even if he was in a regular jail a lot of inmates feel like they'll increase their rep if they attack a former authority figure. Attacking a Soldier may be almost as rep-building as attacking a former police officer in their opinion.

Nine times out of ten, you'll get a harsher sentence in the military than you would as a civilian. His sentence is light because he took a plea bargin. When I was in Fort Benning they sent one Soldier to jail for 48 years because he raped two female Soldiers. Most civilian courts would give you less than half that; Mike Tyson only got ten years for his rape conviction and spent three of them behind bars before going back into boxing less than six months after his release. I'm pretty sure you already know how much time Bradley Manning is looking at right now for what he did if he's convicted. Even stuff that's perfectly legal for civilians can get you thrown in jail; adultery is legal for civilians but if a servicemember is caught they could throw him in jail if they wanted to take it that far (although they'll usually just demote them instead).

Three murders and all he gets is 24 years?! I don't care if he took responsibility and testified against his cohorts. That should have just downgraded him from a death sentence to life imprisoned.ThePlothole

He was sent to a military prison, right? It's going to be a long 24 years.

That's bull. There's a difference between killing an enemy combatant on the battlefield, and you and your infantry tricking Afghan civilians into believing their detained, and then shooting them like game... and then cutting off their body-parts as trophies. This is why the world hates us. Because a piece of crap like this brain-dead kid, who partakes in the murder and torture of innocents, can get out in 7 years for "good behavior" This legal system SUCKS. He should be killed, in front of the army, as an example to anyone else bloodthirsty enough or stupid enough to give us a bad name by playing "Cabela's big game hunter" with civilians.

Generally that is how plea bargains work....they give a lesser sentence to the individual testifying against other actors....nothing new.

Probably PTSD related. You can't really tell how someone are going to be able to cope with the horrors of war. This soldier wasn't able to. What a shame...

Listen up. You've never been in a war zone. It's horrible. YOU can't fathom it, so before you start smacking your lips on your moral armchair, remember than you aren't in his boots.

Reading an article on PTSD isn't going to help you understand what it's like to have nightmares about your squad mate getting shot and bleeding out, over and over again until you wake up in a cold sweat.

Not for murder of civilians in foreign countries. Those sentences are usually way lenient in the US military.

If that makes sense to you then why don't justify terrorists too? you don't know what they've been through. So are we supposed to be lenient to them when they go on murdering innocent people just because they may have lived through a traumatic period in their lives that made them hate everything? Forgive me but that's complete BS, many people suffer traumas and the like in life and don't go on murdering people, these individuals are responsible for their actions and should be punished accordingly.

No where did I say anything about leniency or giving him a break. I say, send him to a psych-ward or mental hospital, not a prison. Trauma and psychological stress like PTSD victims suffer from are totally different things. Being a victim of both, I can tell you there is a difference. Don't get your feathers ruffled, you assumed, and now you look silly.
