I enjoy a variety of music be it alternative, hip-hop, rap, or even some pop. But, I like music from the mainstream (i.e. Foo Fighters, John Mayer, Sara Bareilles) just as much as I like non-mainstream music. What do you think...can someone be a music enthusiast and like mainstream music?

Are we talking "mainstream" as in top-40? Or "mainstream" as in popular groups or artists in a particular genre?

Actually both. I think Capital Cities' "Safe and Sound" is one of the best songs out right now, and is in the current top 40.

Well, I don't think it's possible to be a "top-40 enthusiast".

well yeah. Most music "Enthusiasts" like to talk about have either been mainstream once, or sometimes because it is differnet.

Pretty much goes like this "popular music that survives time, does so for a reason" so at the standing no one knows what music survives the test of time, I really love music, and listen to ALOT of music, specific genres I dislike, but I know that a good chunk have once been considered popular music. Heck even most classical music can be considered popular music (and I love classical music)

If one can only be considered a music enthusiast without enjoying popular music they are not a enthusiast, they are a pretentious dick bag.

People worry WAY too much about what other people think. If everyone would just worry about what makes them happy instead of focusing on what others enjoy that they dont agree with this would be a much nicer world to live in.

Obviously. Most music enthusiasts I've met know more about mainstream music than non-music enthusiasts (which is unlike myself). They also happen to like (or claim to like) a lot of non-mainstream music as well. You can even be a music enthusiast and listen to exclusively mainstream music - but I'd equate that to being a food enthusiast and only eating at McDonalds. (Third fast food analogy of the day, I'm on a role).

Good music can be mainstream and shitty music can be underground.

Seriously, this whole, "I listen to underground because mainstream sucks" is dumb.

Personally, I listen to a lot of Led Zeppelin, classic rock, and sometimes rap. Occasionally I like to listen to some songs by Kesha, Kate Perry, or TI for shits and giggles.

I dont listen to mainstream music because mainstream doesn't play what i listen to. When i hear main stream, i think of music on popular radio stations, and on tv and such. In that thought, i dont listen to mainstream unless im driving with the radio on (which i rarely.) I do consider myself a music enthusiast because i dont limit myself to any genre. i listen to anything that sounds good. plus i go out of my way to find rare and high quality music. But to answer your question, i think most people who listen to main steam are not music enthusiasts.

Of course you can. AKA me. I like mostly popular music and bands. I'm not a hipster, underground idiot.

I'm pretty picky though. I'm really harsh on melodies and immediacy of songs. I find most things boring, or they "dont quite get there".

I was listening to the radio for probably 2 hours yesterday, and the best song that came on was "ET" by Katy Perry. I want more bands to come along and write hits, but oh well. It's just not happening. The big bands of the 00's are out of steam.

I am fine with this just as long as we can exclude Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj. Other mainstream music is usually just boring but at least not offensive. We should agree that those 4 though are an affront to humanity.

Actually, most of any kind of art is crap because it's relatively easy to make it and a lot harder to make it good. That's not being elitist, it's a simple consequence of the fact that these sorts of things have a relatively low barrier of entry. Most paintings are crap because ANYONE can paint and most painters won't take the time to get actually good at it. Now one can certainly argue that music has a higher barrier of entry than many other art forms, but it's still easy enough to get into that most of the people doing it aren't gonna be good at it.

I listen to a lot of underground music, whether it be hip hop or metal, but I'm definitely not an elitist and judge people who don't have the same taste as me. I just listen to things that I find catchy and have good lyrics, and I find that in underground music. Having said that, there are still plenty of mainstream songs I do find catchy and will listen to.

I've always thought guys listening to Katy Perry and Lady Gaga weren't very legit.

Why? Maybe they just enjoy pop music.

The way I see it, I can't really control what I like and what I dislike. Some things are just more pleasing to my ears than others. I'm not going to pretend to dislike something that I truly enjoy just because I "shouldn't" like it.

(I say this as someone who doesn't care for Katy Perry or Lady Gaga)
