[QUOTE="iam2green"][QUOTE="DarkPrinceXC"]Except my bed is a couch, and I have no sheets, just a fairly heavy plush blanket. I have weird dreams every single night. Just the other day, I had a dream that I was Shrek, riding on Donkey up a verticle part of a mountain, and he stopped.....turned his head.... and said to me "If you don't believe in me, we will fall all the way down". Then I woke up. mrbojangles25

thats a pritty funny dream. i think i'm going to try this but i am a person that likes to roll around when i sleep.

rofl this is the fifth time ive come back to read it and it still makes me laugh.

With that said, what exactly is sleep paralysis?

If i read correctrly, I might have had my first one the other day. I was home for thanksgiving and went to sleep, and I dreamt that I was in a trash compactor (like in Star Wars, only real life) and I was like standing up and yelling, but when I actually woke up there was no transition. It was like I was suddenly not in the trash compactor, but I could remember every single detail. In the dream, I was acting logically and stuff, and everything seemed under my control (except hte fact that I was stick in a trash compactor).

You wake up, but you can't move Usually hallucinations of shadow people occur.

You wake up completely unable to move. Sometimes you'll see things out of the corner of your eye, or a figure at the foot of your bed. Hallucinations basically.

oh in that case I have those frequently.

I always see tarantulas. I lay there for like 10 seconds, then it finally registers, kick off my covers and jump out of bed and stomp on "it". Then I walk downstairs and watch TV all the while telling myself "Hey, its just a dream" but damn if it dont look real lol

That's how it happens to me the most. I wont be able to sleep and when I finally do, my body will shut down completely, trapping me in slumber. Sometimes it's cool manipulating the lucid dream but other times you realize you actually can't wake up on command. It's like wanting to scream but not being able to.

Learn to jump into lucid dreams from normal dreams. Sleep paralysis isn't worth it.

Why would you want to inflict this on yourself? :?Jaks_Secret
It already happens naturally...that is why sometimes if you wake up at like 3:30 or 4:00am assuming you go to bed at some normal time, you will be in stage 4 and that is where your brain in at the slowest. If you become startled during this stage by more than just an alarm clock a lot of times you may experience a sensation of paralysis for the first 3-5 seconds after mentally waking up where you are unable to move because the signals down your vertebrae are blocked to naturally prevent self injury during dreaming and such...

Having a lucid dream is something I would want to do, but inducing a nightmare while you're still awake is not.

Actually, sleeping on your back is proven to have more lucid dreams, and, well, dreams in general.

So that makes sense.

Hah! I've been doing it wrong then. I always sleep on my belly. :P

So what happens during these "episodes"....:)Shadowhawk000

It is believed that during these instances the brain is able to comprehend a higher percentage of the world around them, or in other words, you are more sensitive to paranormal activity. The reason for this lyes in the nature of dreaming or REM sleep, when you are dreaming, during sleep, your brain is accessing previous memory through the hippocampus, during this the brain enters an apathetic state whereas the regions (the basal ganglia among others) that filter out "irrelevant" information become inactive.

Why does these regions become inactive might you ask, this is because the brain needs access to deeper layers of memory and thoughts through the hippocampus without any interference or filtering, in other words the brain gains access to our subconsciousness. This is why, in your dreams you might remember things you usually don't, or come to realise feelings regarding certain matters you weren't aware of . For more information you should read about dream interpretation and our subconsciousness, interpreting your dreams is a good way to really get to know yourself, you'd be surprised of how many suppressed feelings and memories you carry around.

This is why people often sense or see an aberration during sleep paralysis.

That would be my question. I've heard nothing pleasant about sleep paralysis. Some people seem to find it quite frightening.

i also remember having absolutely terrifying nightmares

i had a dream i was in my house, and it was pitch black and zombies were breaking in

i suddenly realized it was a dream and tried my best to open my eyes, but i just couldnt:|

Mad_Banana
Something like that happened to me, the dream was more psychological though, there was a black hurricane flashing + my dad sleeping and slowly getting hairy and mum just acting spooky. The realisation that you're trapped is just ****ed up.

Sleep paralyisis is on the short list of things I never want to happen to me. I don't feel like finding out what kind of disturbing s**t my mind would come up with in that situation.

Can't say I have ever had sleep paralysis, but from reading this thread I don't want to. I mean not being able to move and breathe properly whilst you are able to see shadow people, that sounds bloody scary.

Hah, wow. I had one last night about me leaving a sandwich on an airplane. The sandwich became moldy and started to smell. Apparently the odor was so bad that it enraged the passangers and the pilot, causing the plane to crash. And I felt really guilty, even after I woke up.

Dreams are awesome.

She gets it recurringly - Usually once or twice a week. She's described to me before as being totally paralysed and unable to move. This one time she was unable to breathe, and she almost suffocated. She's taking meds for it now though, scared me ****less when she nearly died. :|

Wow, that's weird. Paralysis is normal (why else would it be called sleep paralysis?) but not being able to breath... well that's not. I would say it was sleep apnea, but it sounds like she was awake during this so not that either. Best of wishes to her.

For the rest of you, it's not "hurting" yourself. Your body does it every single night, but you are nearly always unconscious. I mean, think about it. I'm sure some of you had some dreams where you were running as fast as possible from something. In real life, were you kicking your legs like crazy trying to run away from the thing? Of course not. You may have kicked a bit, but you won't go into a full running motion. That's because of of the sleep paralysis. If you are conscious during it, nothing happens to you. It is a little eerie to feel those sensations, but you can always snap out of it (you can't get stuck in sleep paralysis, and chances are that if you don't fall into a dream, you'll snap out of it soon enough whether you want to or not). I don't belive in any paranormal nothings going on during paralysis either; it's all in your head.
