Well this was a couple days ago I saw on PBS, but the Mayans "sacrificed" each day a line of people going 2 miles long. Yes, every single day. This was because they believed the sun god wanted the people to give sacrifices to "repay" for the sun's pain, and if they stopped, the sun god will punish the people by making the sun go out.

Pretty jacked up if you ask me.

actually gradas is steps and steps can also be stairs

but youre right escaleras is the term used for stairs

I learned that the US uses the Metric System, adopted in the the 1870s and was actually one of the first to standardize it.

It was never enforced though, so it has fallen flat on its face here.
