Hmmm....Maybe so.

South Carolina's legal drinking age could return to 18 for the first time in more than 25 years if two recent court rulings in Richland and Aiken counties are upheld on appeal.

Longtime Richland County Magistrate Mel Maurer on July 15 ruled that the state law prohibiting youths ages 18 through 20 from possessing or consuming liquor was unconstitutional. The current legal drinking age is 21.

On July 23, Aiken County Chief Magistrate Rodger Edmonds ruled that law and a similar law involving the possession and consumption of beer and wine in the 18-20 age group were unconstitutional.

If it works in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec, I don't see why it wouldn't work there.

Great idea, though 18 for a beer is still too high in my opinion. I think the drinking age of 21 is preposterous.

Always found it strange that you could die for your country, but are not able to legally have a beer.

Why not. Old enough to be sent to a foreign country with guns, and grenades. Should be old enough to drink.

At age 18, most people are reasonable and mature enough to know what's stupid and what isn't so it's probably alright.

It should be eighteen. I truly don't understand why you cannot legally drink at eighteen but can smoke cigarettes.

I don't know, it might be more like "way better". European nations allow their citizens to drink at earlier ages, so alcohol isn't such a big deal for them.

Americans aren't allowed to drink till they're 21. It's a bigger deal to them, and they really take advantage of it. There are hostels in some European countries that won't even accept Americans anymore because they have a reputation for getting stupid drunk.

Good, it works in Canada having it between 18-19 21 is ridiculous to say the least, it's unrealistic.

Yeah, in Germany, you can buy beer and wine at 16, hard alcohol at 18. In Mexico, (where I was for a year) they don't care about legal ages. If you were able to look above the counter, you could easily buy cigarettes, get into bars or clubs. Even though the lega age there is 19, they don't care. I was 16 when I was there and in one year, I was asked for ID once. But I dunno, it doesn't really matter to me :P I like the German law, where you can get beer at 16.

Damnit, i meant to vote no. No, not a good idea. Then again i'm already 21 so it doesn't matter to me which age they put it at anymore, also i'm in a different state. HOWEVER, 18 year olds are not mature enough, not all but some, to handle that... most 18 year olds are immature and think that they are invincible. Legalizing drinking at that age would be simply dumb. The death toll would rise, muy mucho.

although i do not see how it's unconstitutional, (only thought it would be with the amendment to end prohibition), i think 18 is a reasonable age. Assuming the kids have responsible parents, the parents can somewhat monitor their alcohol consumption, try to teach them good habits and whatnot. You can't teach anything like that to a college kid away at campus drinking illegally.

i doubt it will rise that much, if at all. the irresponsible ones would obtain alcohol illegally anyway.

It shouldn't be brought down if the nearby states don't also bring down the drinking age....which isn't going to happen.

South Carolina is a poor state.

If it was grants from the government (outside the given bloc grants) it wont. That's the only reason any state has the drinking age at 21, because the federal government will stop coughing up some extra and much needed cash. Then again, South Carolina isn't known for making good decisions.

You mature a certain level more when you reach 21. Most 18 year olds are idiots. I wasn't though, I was a good 18 year old.

Really, do you have strict parents then or something, i was offered beer by my dad at about 15, not too much, but its like here try it see if you like it. People dont get drunk off beer, they get drunk of harder stuff like vodka or rum.

I agree. I was at a graduation party yesterday and I got offered beer by some relatives (being seventeen, my parents don't mind me having one). So I decided to take a sip of Corona. Needless to say, I spit most of it back out. :P

Sure. I always think 21 is a silly drinking age.

If you haven't learned to be careful with alcohol by 18, you're not going to know any better by 21.

Good. If the law wants to treat you as an adult at 18, then you better have the right to at least buy a beer.
