I was in the area yesterday when a lot of craziness was going on in Times Square. It was quite a sight, a lot of nervous people and stressed out policemen, understandably. For a good long while most all of Times Square was closed, creating all kinds of traffic mayhem. I have to admit as a long time New Yorker, I'm getting kind of sick of living in the biggest nut job target in the world. I mean, it's kind of fun sometimes that it always seems to be NYC that's being destroyed or attacked in movies and video games (I sometimes like to leave a window open and allow the native sounds of police sirens etc to combine with the soundtrack - do it yourself super surround sound) but even then it gets to be a bit old after a while and I wish they would pick on someone else. ----- Anyway, I just saw our police commissioner talking about the incident, and a bunch of information is coming out right now on CNN, including the suggestion that Viacom may have been the target because of South Park's recent episode. They are saying it was clearly meant to cause terror, and it was a car bomb. Despite wishing terrorists would give us a miss for a change, I stand behind Matt and Trey 100 percent... just maybe I'd like to stand a few hundred feet behind them. : ) Free speech is always worth it. But sheesh, could you whackaloons please pick a new target some day? ---------- EDIT: NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelley was just asked if this incident was related to the South Park controversy, and he said "we certainly would not rule it out." I've been watching NYC conferences like this for years and he is usually very careful and measured in his responses, so I take this to mean there is a strong possibility that yes, it is. It has been confirmed to be a car bomb that used two alarm clocks for synchronization - one alarm was sent for midnight, the other was damaged. LINKS to information reported before today's police conference: The Telegraph UKAssociated Content ArticleNew York One Website ------------ A recent info update from CNN's site: Police and federal agents on Sunday were reviewing surveillance footage that shows a possible suspect in the failed Times Square car bombing, describing him as a white man in his 40s who was walking away from the area where the vehicle was parked, looking furtively over his shoulder and removing a layer of clothing, officials said. Investigators were examining eight bags of an unknown, granular substance that was packed into a gun locker found in the vehicle, a dark green Nissan Pathfinder. A police bomb squad used an exploding charge to open the 75-pound locker on Sunday afternoon, discovering the substance and a metal pot containing a thicket of wires and M-88 firecrackers. The substance, described by Raymond W. Kelly, the police commissioner, as having the look and feel of fertilizer, raises the possibility that explosive materials were contained in the bomb, although Mr. Kelly said investigators are still describing the device as incendiary. "We were lucky it didn't detonate," Mr. Kelly said at a news briefing on Sunday. "In my judgment, it would have caused casualties, a significant fireball. I'm told the vehicle itself would have been cut in half." Investigators have still not determined a motive in the failed attack, and Mr. Kelly said there was no evidence to support a claim of responsibility by a Pakistani Taliban group. ---------- EDIT: It is worth noting that the only suspect so far is a white male in his forties, and that despite it being labeled as a terror attack and rightly so, this could just as easily be a domestic act of terrorism, or the act of a lone crazy person.

I plan on moving out of NYC one day just because of this.

Did they find anything suspicious at the scene?

I saw the announcement on CNN.com, but I didn't see any indication on their site (yet) that they knew the who or why. What information do they have that determines a link or target?

If you can access it, there is a news conference on CNN right now. The way it is playing out so far is this was a genuine terror attack, not good at all - a car bomb using two synchronized clocks. Car was parked and left to detonate. While they are still examining and determining the situation, the suggestion has already come out (it was even a scrawl at the bottom of the screen) that it was meant to target the Viacom building.

So basically some terrorists tried to blow up a car bomb outside the South Park HQ just because of a joke?

It isn't know for certain yet, but it has been suggested that the target was the Viacom building which is right nearby.

I just added this to my post, but the police commissioner was just asked and he said "we certainly would not rule it out." Knowing how careful he is in early stage investigations based on having seen a lot of these in my day, this was a pretty surprising answer and sounds a lot to me like "yes."

It was noticed by a member of the public who alerted the police that the car was parked in the same place for quite some time, the police saw the bomb equipment and called the bomb squad.

They are insanely lucky that it didn't go off, it would of caused so much chaos.

The guy who found it said when he looked at the ignition there were about 20 other keys on the keyring. It then started making a popping noise and smoke started to pour out of the car so everyone got out of there.

It's even weirder - some t-shirt vendors noticed the car was "smoking!" I don't even know what that means, but it's been reported several times.

Scary stuff. :( Again, they are so lucky. I guess after 9/11 they're obviously more suspicious and it's obviously paid off.

I can't imagine this being a conspiracy, if they (as in the government) wanted a bomb to go off there's no way they would of messed it up.

Don't get me wrong, manhattan is cool and all and its a very nice place, but there are some areas that are just down right dangerous.

Not perfect enough - there are endless surveillance cameras most New Yorkers don't even know about that are tailor made for situations like these. I have a feeling within a few days information is going to come out about who they are looking for, meaning who parked the vehicle and left it. Also a Pennsylvania tourist claims to have video that could be helpful. What was most notable for me about the press conference was as is typical for Ray Kelley he is extremely careful about any questions early in an investigation. For example, he was clear and firm about saying there is absolutely no evidence or reason to believe the Taliban was involved, or that any of the others claiming responsibility so far had anything to do with it, but when asked if the target was Viacom and South Park his response was he wouldn't rule it out. To me this sounds like it is a very good possibility that this has entirely to do with South Park.

Hmm that' a good point, they could still cause chaos without actually having the bomb explode, people still want somebody to blame and they could give the public a list of people, including an American Militia group. Anything is possible.

Aaah, religion. It just complicates things.

Seriously though, that South Park episode was pretty funny...

Lucky that bomb didn't go off, though. That would've been baaad.

But South Park, knowing them, is probably gonna strike back.

LOL, I've actually thought of making a sign that says "I support South Park and Free Speech" and standing as near to the Viacom building as is allowed. Somebody needs to do it, even though I am so sick of New York being the convenient target for loonies.

That would really be dumb if it was caused just cause of a satirical cartoon. I love South Park, and I believe Matt and Trey design the episodes in such a way that we always get a strong message about morality at the end. Long live South Park!

Some groups have already claimed responsibility, but police are saying they have no proof that any of them was responsible. It has been pointed out that the bomb is quite similar in design that was used to bomb an airport in Glasgow but no one really knows anything for sure, except the bomb was clearly intended to result in as many casualties as possible. I'm adding some info about what was found in the car to my original post.

Mate, the day you have two towers collapse and 2,605 people die in one day, you can get back to me and boast on how above it all and worldly you are. We all know we Americans were late to the car bomb and target of terrorists on our own soil party, but really... what is your point? I played a gig in Belfast with the political punk rock band MDC and got an earful and eyeful of what things were like (including our English driver being warned he could not drive down certain routes with his UK plates and the venue we played at having been a place where IRA weapons were stored in the past.) I know car bombs are a regular occurrence in other parts of the world but I think you can leave NY out of your condescension.

If you react with fear like that then you're saying the terrorists have accomplished their objective.

That just flat out isn't true. A car bomb, placed in a busy city area with the intention of killing people? Every other day? Nonsense.

[QUOTE="albatrossdrums"] precisely, stop getting so worked up about it. It didnt go off, and you get them few and inbetween.. that is hardly a reason to be scared to live in a city.

I think you are reading your own attitude in to my post. If you can point out where I said I was scared I'd be grateful. I don't see anything in this post that suggests paranoia.

Ok scared was maybe a bit strong but paranoia? here we are. "...I'm getting kind of sick of living in the biggest nut job target in the world... ...it gets to be a bit old after a while and I wish they would pick on someone else..." paranoia that you are the only target, and a slight fear that it will happen again.

[QUOTE="Ninja-Hippo"][QUOTE="RiseAgainst12"] Not a troll, there is a bomb found every other day atm here In Belfast.. and yet it still doesnt cause a fuss like this.RiseAgainst12

That just flat out isn't true. A car bomb, placed in a busy city area with the intention of killing people? Every other day? Nonsense.

Yea and guess what! they actually go off here. Maybe not just Belfast, but Across the North of Ireland yes. Bombs have even been found in residential area's by kid's even.

Not 'every other day' they dont. Nobody would live there if there were bombs going off and being found every other day.
