Do you think I would easily be able to get into a local state university with a weak application? My grades and class rank are decent (3.7 at 6%) but I have no extracurricular activities, leadership positions, summer activities, etc. to list. I'm getting set up to start volunteering at a hospital, and by the time I'm ready to actually apply, I should have ~50 hours. I haven't yet taken the SAT/ACT, but I got a 179 on the PSAT. How important are extracurriculars to colleges? What is most important to them?

Depends on how competitive the college is.

University of Arizona and ASU. They're both local state run universities.

Dude, with a 3.7 GPA you can get in just about anywhere, don't sweat it.

If you do that volunteering and get a decent standardized test score, you might be okay.

I don't take the ACT (I'm not taking the SAT) until April. I'm still in my third year of high school.

Extracurricular activities wouldn't be needed to get into *most* state run universities. Even the higher-up colleges don't really require them if your grades are good enough (3.7 isn't bad). However, they would do great things towards a scholarship.

So would you say it is fine to leave those sections completely blank?

Get those hours. The level of importance varies from school to school (your major is also a factor), but in my experience, extracurricular hours are extremely important in their decision. Your grades are very good but you simply cannot get into a competitive school on grades alone.

I did and was accepted to every school I applied for, even a couple private colleges. I got an academics scholarship to a couple of the state schools. However, I was a part of a couple honorary societies that basically existed for a name. We didn't meet or anything, so I didn't count those as extracirricular.

You'll be fine, I had a 3.7, no curricular activities (well I put JV club hockey, but that's it), no community service, etc and I got into University of Colorado at Boulder, as well as everywhere else I applied to (Colorado State and School of Mines). You'll get into ASU. Especially being local, I'd say you're just about a gaurantee to get accepted.

Got my acceptance letters from NAU/UofA (live in AZ)couple of weeks ago, so i think i can help. grade wise i was decent nothing special, 3.4 gpa although i took a few AP classes here and there. played football and basketball for a couple years, just did it to play not for app. for my volunteer work I did stuff with my church and I volunteer at a local elementary school I don't think it will be hard at all for you, you have a great GPA, you can probably get in on it alone if although you want to volunteer thats great to it wont hurt you, playing a sport thats not to demanding like track & field would give you an extracurricular activity. The only trouble for me at least is i am dreading going to a jock/bro school like UofA, which I probably will go to anyway.

Take the SAT at least once. Most schools require it.

college applications work like this in my experience. are his grades pretty good? (above 3.6 or so) yup, ok now what makes him different from the rest of the guys above that? i designed an additive for triple catalytic converters in exhaust systems dramatically reducing the amount of platinum required for them (unfortunately it's still more costly than the platinum itself, but given a few years it will be very important as platinum gets even rarer) to function properly, and had a GPA of 3.67, but i was accepted into MIT (i went to stanford to stay near home though, since i was mostly engineering, and MIT is really strong in atomic physics)

I graduated from ASU :D

Even though it is more difficult to get into ASU and U of A, with your grade I think you should be fine. But I would start thinking about which major you want to get in. For example, pretty much every majors in business (marketing, finance, accounting) are uber competitive and you need to have a very high GPA and some extracurricular activities to get into one of those. Back then those who got in had an average GPA of 3.6... I would imagine it would be even higher now

You should be fine to get in but definitely need to work your tail off if you want in to a more competitive program. I think the business program at ASU just went up again, nationally rank #25 according to US News... that's very good for a state university

A pupil I'm tutoring just got into Oxford and she has absolutely no life whatsoever. So failing all else, you could always apply to an English uni.
